ROCKY MOUNT -- With the new seeding process this season for the state football playoffs, it was uncertain how the brackets would shake down ahead of last Saturday's selection process by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
So every victory was needed as clubs tried to earn the highest seed possible -- or simply get into the postseason.

Southern Nash's long undefeated streak is now at 23 after the Firebirds defeated Cape Fear by a 4-1 margin Monday in first-round action of the Class 3-A State Boys Soccer Playoffs at historic Firebird Stadium on the SNHS campus.

Nash County reviewed and voted on its redistricting plan last week which sparked some concern from two commissioners and several citizens there had not been enough notice for public review and input.
Nash County hired Brooks Pierce Law Firm for the process of redrawing the districts which is required every ten years with newly released Census numbers.
Attorneys Amanda Hawkins and Craig Schauer presented an overview of the process to the commissioners on September 7.

Nash County held its municipal elections Tuesday with a 14.18 percent turnout of registered voters at the polls across the county.
In a close race, Nashville residents re-elected two town council members Tuesday. Kate Burns and Larry D. Taylor were both re-elected to serve four more years on the Nashville Town Council.

Kids were treated to several Halloween activities in Nashville Friday. Nashville Elementary School held its annual costume parade in downtown Friday morning. A downtown trick-or-treat event was held Friday evening and the Spooky Blast Trunk-or-Treat was hosted by the Nash County Sheriff's Office and assisted by Nashville's Police and Fire Departments.

Nash County convenience centers will soon require residents to have an ID tag before releasing their trash at the sites.
The county has nine convenience centers: Stony Hill, Spring Hope, Strickland's Crossroads, Vicks, Old Nash Tech, Drake, Landfill, Salem, and Aventon. There are plans of expanding one in the Westmount area so it will become 10 at some point.

The Stony Creek area of Rocky Mount is losing its rescue squad indefinitely.
Nash County Emergency Services Director Scott Rogers said the Stony Creek rescue squad has been unable to find enough volunteers and is no longer able to maintain its contract with the county. The rescue squad is closing on December 31.

The town of Spring Hope board has approved a contract for Hal Mason to be the town's interim town manager. Former Mayor Gwaltney said Mason will start the position Thursday and he will be working twice a week until the town hires a full-time town manager.
He said Mason was recommended by the League of Municipalities.

Nash County is conducting an online public survey to gather input for the creation of a new land use plan that will guide the growth and development of the rural, unincorporated areas of the county over the next 10 to 20 years.

I was watching a show on TV recently that talked about a program that could potentially eradicate mosquitoes.
Like most people, I hate mosquitoes. The swatting and the bumps are annoying.
Worldwide, mosquitoes are much more dangerous. They are responsible for spreading ma-laria and dengue fever, killing millions of people and making mosquitoes among the most danger-ous creatures on earth.
