The story is told of a young, new preacher who preached his first sermon before his new congregation. It was a great message. He received many compliments. The following Sunday, he preached the very same sermon. It was good, but he received fewer compliments. On his third Sunday at the church, he preached the same sermon he had shared the two previous Sundays. The congregation was bewildered. They instructed the deacons to find out what was going on.

Thousands of student in grades 6-8 across the nation compete each year entering the VFW's Patriot Pen youth essay contest for their share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards. This year's theme was: How can I be a good American. VFW Post 2057 awarded its winners last week. Isaaca Jefferys (far right) won first place. Sophia Sisolak (far left) won second place.

The Nash UNC Health Care Foundation has welcomed four new members to its Board of Directors: Keen Gravely, Mike Gaynor, Nancy Nelson and Shelayna Parker.
Keen Gravely is a retired educator from Nash County Public Schools. He works with an elementary school tutoring program at Englewood Presbyterian Church and has served on the board at Rocky Mount Preparatory School since 2019.

North Carolina's egg prices were lower on all sizes when compared to last week. Supplies of extra large were fairly light, large light, while medium were heavy to meet a moderate demand.

Nash UNC Health Care has appointed three new members to its Board of Commissioners, due to Jeffrey Batts completing his final term and two additional vacancies needing to be filled. New board members David Browder, MD, H. Mike Johnson, OD, and Kevin Jones started their terms after being sworn in at the January 6 board meeting.

Two recent graduates of North Carolina Wesleyan College's Teacher Education Program have earned First-Year Teacher of the Year awards from Nash County Public Schools. Zack Foster, a spring 2021 graduate, teaches English at Southern Nash High School and Jackie Webb, a fall 2021 graduate, is a Mathematics teacher at Northern Nash High School.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Shane Garrett grew up in Franklin County and competed in baseball for the Town of Louisburg Parks and Recreation Department.
Now, Garrett is coming home for the next two years as he has signed a letter-of-intent to continue his baseball career at Louisburg College.
Garrett, who has been a member of the Faith Christian School diamond program in Nash County for the past three years, chose Louisburg College over several different options that he had to compete on the collegiate level.

GREENSBORO -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College men's basketball program rolled to its 10th conference win of the season last Saturday as they routed Greensboro College 92-71 on the road to clinch the #2 seed in the East Division.
Wesleyan improved to 18-7 overall and 10-4 in the division.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College baseball team rolled to a big 14-4 non-conference neutral site win over Susquehanna University (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
The Bishops took advantage of five SU errors while totaling 14 runs on 10 hits in the win en route to improving to 3-3 on the year.

RED OAK -- Travis Gamache and Carson Ashman have been cornerstones of Northern Nash's recent baseball renaissance -- both on and off the field.
Certainly, both players are blessed with talent -- and have been teammates since their days at Red Oak Middle School.
Ashman has developed into a top-notch outfielder for the Fighting Knights -- and also gives Coach Joey Keefe an always-welcomed left-handed bat.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Excellent coach, tremendous teacher. And an even better person.
If someone drew up a scouting report for Renny Taylor, those would be the intangibles listed on the list as Taylor has excelled in all phases of his work life during his career at Nash Central High School.

WINSTON-SALEM -- Colin Johnson's goal is to compete in the pole vault event in college -- and his recent performances may have raised the eyebrows of some potential future coaches on that level.
Johnson, a senior standout at Nash Central High School, was able to qualify for the Class 1/2-A State Indoor Track and Field Championships, which were held at the JDL Fast Track facility in Winston-Salem.

Members of the Nash County Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted Monday night during a special called meeting to make wearing a mask at school optional.
Staff and students are still required to wear a mask on a school bus or activity bus due to current federal guidelines suggested by the Center of Disease Control (CDC.)
