CLEVELAND -- While some coaches may dismiss a club's performance during a holiday tournament as nothing more than a glorified scrimmage break from conference competition, others claim that a strong showing over the Christmas Break can serve as a positive catapult for the remainder of the campaign.
If that's the case, the Rocky Mount Lady Gryphons are on their way to great things the rest of the year -- as if the start of the season hasn't been impressive enough for Coach Pam Gainey's club.

BUNN -- It was a Wake Forest kind of day last Wednesday in the championship round of the Bunn Christmas Basketball Tournament at the Bunn Dome.
The Cougars claimed a clean sweep of the annual event, beginning with the WF girls earning the title with a 53-29 victory over the homestanding Bunn Ladycats.
The contest was tight through the first quarter, which ended with the Ladycats ahead 12-10.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College women's basketball team rolled to an easy 83-52 victory over Salem College in USA South Conference action on Tuesday afternoon in the Bishops' first game of 2022.
The Bishops got off to a strong start running out to an 11-0 lead before leading 21-7 at the end of the opening quarter.

County okays new subdivisions

Rezoning requests were approved on Monday that will pave the way for the development of two new subdivisions in rural Nash County.
Nash County Commissioners approved the conditional rezoning requests for the Seamster Phase 2 Subdivision on the south side of Bull Head Road, Bailey as well as for the Baker Farm Subdivision, which will be located on the east side of Barnes Hill Church Road, Nashville.

Stony Creek closes down 65 years of rescue operations

Stony Creek Rescue lowered its flags New Year's Eve to commemorate the last day of active service and the end of an era dating back 65 years.
Nash County announced in November that due to the lack of volunteers and the increased obligations of the area the county decided it was time to distribute those responsibilities to other stations thus ending the response to rescue calls coming from Stony Creek.

Nash County is planning to use grant funds to provide Wi-Fi at Glover Park.
Nashville's Town Council approved an interlocal agreement with Nash County on Tuesday night at the board's regular meeting. The interlocal agreement is for installation and operation of a Wi-Fi station at Glover Park for public use.

COVID-19 cases soar in Nash County

Nash County reported a 282 percent increase in new COVID-19 cases during its weekly briefing held Tuesday afternoon.
Nash County Health Department Director Bill Hill said a surge this week tallied to 1,425 new cases reported as of midnight Monday.
"That's a record," said Hill reviewing the numbers over the past month which have increased every week, "We are certainly seeing a surge."
