ROCKY MOUNT -- Round One of the same-classification football games in the Big East Conference began last Friday -- with a playoff spot going to the winner of the four-team, round-robin format.
Nash Central took the first step toward that lofty goal as the homestanding Bulldogs slid past Bunn by a 15-6 margin at The Dawg Pound on the NCHS campus.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College football team dropped a 31-26 heartbreaker to Maryville College at home last Saturday afternoon at Vernon T. Bradley Stadium on the NCWC campus.
Maryville got off to a fast start last Saturday, driving right down the field on its opening drive -- but would miss a field goal.

STANHOPE -- Southern Nash continued its dominance of the Big East Conference boys soccer schedule Monday with a home victory against the Northern Nash Fighting Knights.
Four different Firebirds found the back of the net as Southern Nash remained undefeated in the Big East with a 4-1 decision.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Southern Nash appears to have picked the right time to begin peaking toward what the Firebirds hope will be a memorable first season under the direction of new head coach Brian Batchelor.
With the three most important games of the campaign upon them, the Firebirds opened the crucial Big East Conference stretch in style last Thursday by delivering a 45-27 road triumph at defending league champion Rocky Mount.

FRANKLINTON -- It took longer than anticipated, but Northern Nash was eventually able to wrestle control of last Friday's Big East Conference football game against a feisty Franklinton group.
The homestanding Red Rams only trailed by seven points at halftime versus the heavily favored Fighting Knights, but Northern Nash was able to deliver a trio of unanswered touchdowns in the second stanza en route to securing an important 42-14 decision over the Red Rams at the FHS Football Field.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The predictable unpredictability of the Big East Conference volleyball campaign continued last Tuesday when Nash Central hosted Louisburg in a key league showdown.
Just a few days earlier, Central had suffered a disappointing home loss to Bunn, and that setback all but eliminated the Lady Bulldogs from title consideration.

The Nash County 4-H Clubs celebrated National 4-H Week from October 3 to October 9.
During 4-H Week, the county's 4-H Clubs partook in activities including a proclamation presented and approved by the Nash County Board of Commissioners, showing 4-H spirit, and highlighting 4-H alumni and volunteers daily.

A traffic island will be placed on Washington Street, in front of Drake Street, as part of the Nash County Detention Center expansion project.
The jail expansion has been talked about for years and various town meetings have been held regarding how it will affect travel throughout nearby streets.
In order to expand the detention center, a portion of Elm Street will be closed permanently.

Local kids attended the Teacher Workday Camp on Friday at Nashville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources located in downtown Nashville.

The event is one of many new programs offered by the town at its new recreation facility at 108 S. Boddie Street.

Nashville's Planning Department continues to move forward with derelict properties in town.
Code Enforcement Officer Shawn Lucas presented three more properties to town council members on Tuesday night for consideration of demolition.
In his agenda report, Lucas said numerous complaints had been received from neighboring residents and property owners about the homes, located at 206 N. Boddie Street, 102 Arrowood Drive and 208 Vale Street.

A Time in the Land: The Best of the Soap Box is the latest book out from Nash County author Michael K. Brantley. This offering is a collection of his best award-winning newspaper columns from The Nashville Graphic over the last nearly quarter century.
"Mike has an incredible gift of storytelling while also the ability to take us back to our roots to remember times that are so influential and relevant to our lives today," wrote longtime Nashville Graphic Publisher Jo Anne Cooper in the book's foreword.

A local boy scout has received the official title of "Eagle Scout," the highest honor bestowed upon scouts.
Hayden Cahoon, 17, was recognized during an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony on Sunday, where he received the official title and insignia.
Cahoon is a Nashville native and has been a member of Nashville Troop 76 since he was in the first grade.

An old warehouse located behind the Nashville Exchange in downtown Nashville is slated for demolition this week.
The structure, though tattered and worn, still holds a bit a history for Nashville once serving as the grocery room of the Jones May Company which was also at one time the Jones Sherrod Company.

I am breaking several of my own personal rules this week.
But exceptional times call for exceptional acts from exceptional people. Two out of three ain't bad.
First, I'm writing about Christmas before Halloween or Thanksgiving.

A somewhat historic piece of Nashville will be torn down this week. An old warehouse located behind the storefronts on Washington Street, which served many businesses for more than a century, has met the end of its journey.
Nashville Exchange restaurant owner Lisa Hattaway, who also owns the warehouse property, has gone far and beyond with no luck finding someone with the desire, and resources, to repurpose the bricks and wood from the building to at least make good use of some of Nashville's history.

The Twin County Community Pride, Inc. has announced nine new inductees representing Edgecombe and Nash counties to the 17th annual class of the Twin County Hall of Fame. The 2021 class includes seven men and two women of whom five are living and four will be inducted posthumously.

People driving through the town of Red Oak will soon see a different sign outside of town hall, an upgraded one.
Town Clerk Tracy Shearin said town hall is going to replace its sign that is directly outside of the building.
The sign will display the phrase "the town of Red Oak" along with community related information, such as events.

Nash County Commissioners presented a resolution at their October meeting honoring the public service of former Nash County Commissioner Mary Wells who represented District 6 since 2009. Wells passed away on July 18th at the age of 84.
