Unpopular traffic island to move forward

Local business owners don't like the idea of a traffic island on West Washington Street, finding it crowding and unnecessary, but county and state officials say it's needed to ensure traffic safety.
A 150-foot-long, 4-feet-wide concrete island is planned for West Washington in front of some of the town's busiest restaurants and stores.

Daycare worker charged with child abuse

A local church-run daycare is trying to salvage its good reputation after allowing a Nashville woman to remain on the job for months after allegedly abusing children.
Bonnie Daughtridge Cooper, 59, of Breedlove Road, faces two counts of misdemeanor child abuse. She has a written promise to appear in court Nov. 15.

School staff may be required to drive buses

Teacher assistants, custodians and other staff members may soon be required to drive buses in the Nash County Public School System.
A policy requiring certain positions to sign a bus driving agreement as a condition of new or continued employment will be brought before the full board of education next month. The policy was first presented last week during a policy committee meeting.

A Spring Hope native who moved to Nashville around four years ago, Hayman began her crafting career as a child, creating string key chains.

Winner receives a $100 Visa card. Bring your cake to Nash Parks and Rec Center, 108 S. Boddie St., at 3 pm. Friday, Oct. 28. Cakes will be judged on frightfulness, originality, whimsy and animation. Judging begins at 5 p.m. Cakes must be picked up at 7 p.m. Entries for 18 years and older; one prize will be given; one cake per person.

My family almost didn't make it to the State Fair this year, which would have made a three-year losing streak. We managed to slide in quietly on the last day Sunday with 105,000 other people.
I loved the State Fair as a kid, and my family didn't go every year, so it remained a pretty exotic, big time event.
