Nash County seniors want more elbow room to play pickleball and take classes.
The Nash County Senior Center in downtown Nashville is running out of room and sometimes has to turn folks away, said Tony Dowdy, a senior who utilizes the facility.
Seniors are often waitlisted for classes due to lack of space, Dowdy said.

Nashville's Town Council is delaying a decision on whether to accept grant funding for a project to beautify Barnes Street.
The town was awarded a $675,000 Rural Transformation Grant for the Barnes Street Streetscape Project from the North Carolina Department of Commerce's Rural Economic Development Division. The town requested $940,000 in grant funding for the project, which is estimated to cost $1,186,477.

Real heroes aren't found on the gridiron or basketball court, they're first responders, Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said Monday of the emergency workers who saved the life of a deputy injured in an interstate shootout.
"When the call went out that an officer was shot on the interstate, there was not one bit of hesitation," Stone said of the first responders.

Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said he's okay with a new bill to end a longstanding state law requiring handgun buyers to obtain a local permit.
Republican lawmakers in the General Assembly have pushed for the end of the law with Democrats' contending it could cause a loophole because background checks aren't required for folks who buy handguns from private sellers.

Nashville's Chamber of Commerce announces applications are open for education scholarships.
The chamber will award three scholarships for the 2023 year.
Funds are raised for the scholarships when chamber members renew memberships and choose to contribute additional funds which go towards a scholarship fund.

Don't call it a boutique.
The Heritage Co. in downtown Nashville, opening Saturday, will offer modest clothing at reasonable prices, said co-owner Brittany Young.
"When someone hears 'boutique,' they think it's expensive," Young said. "That's not what we are. We sell clothes that are youthful, comfortable and appropriate. We are a business with Christ in mind."

Nash County 4-H hosted its annual award's banquet last month. Jalyn Barnes, at right, was the recipient of the 2022 4-H Family and Consumer Science Award but was unable to attend the ceremony. Barnes was presented the award at last week's Sew What 4-H Club meeting. Barnes has been a member of the club for six years and serves as president of the club.

SAN DIEGO - Chief Petty Officer JaDe Augustin, a native of Rocky Mount, serves the U.S. Navy aboard Fleet Logistics Multi-Mission Squadron (VRM) 30 located in San Diego, California.
Augustin joined the Navy 19 years ago.
"I'm the oldest of nine, and I wanted to serve as an example for my siblings," said Augustin.

Y'all know better.
I've been warning people -- I even mentioned it here a couple of weeks ago -- spring is not here.
Granted, I've seen an alarming number of shirtless men out and about in the tri-county area and some physics defying shorts on women. But it is not spring yet.
This is called Fake Spring.

If you are a stay-at-home mom, or a homeschooling mom, or just a mom about to go crazy, just know you're not alone and I get it, I really do. It is hard and no one really understands just how hard, except, of course, others just like us.
But, let's be honest, if you are a stay-at-home mom, you're likely not reading this. Stay-at-home moms don't have time to do such trivial things like read the newspaper or sit still or breathe. I'm trying to write this column while getting kids ready for bed and nursing a pretty nasty headache.
