Coopers Alumni holds annual banquet

The 89th annual banquet of the Coopers High School alumni Association was held Saturday, April 22 at the Coopers School gymnasium.
A social was held at 4 p.m. President Al Joyner welcomed 150 members and guests at the opening of the meeting at 4:30 p.m. The principal of Coopers School, Michelle Griffin, also welcomed everyone back to the school.
The oldest graduates present were Carlton Cockrell, Class of 1950, and Dorothy Parrish, Class of 1951. All veterans were recognized.

With the theme "A Vision of the Future: Believing in the Beauty of Dreams!" the Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. (RMAC) presented its 42nd Jabberwock Scholarship Program on April 23, 2023, at Keihin Auditorium located on the campus of Edgecombe Community College in Tarboro.
The Jabberwock Scholarship Program is held biennially for high school junior and senior young ladies.

The North Carolina weighted average price quoted Thursday, May 4, for small lot sales of delivered, cartoned, grade "A" eggs was 131.14 for Extra Large, 118.25 for Large, 103.55 for Medium, and 69.00 for Small eggs.

My mother died when I was the tender age of seven. It was a very traumatic time for me. However, God had already made sure that someone would be around to step in and give me the mother's love that I so desperately needed.

Price of fire station jumps 25 percent
Price of fire station jumps 25 percent

Construction costs for Nashville's Fire Station II could see an increase of around 25 percent, potentially bringing the total price tag for the new fire station to around $5 million.
Nashville's Town Council approved moving forward with the bidding process for construction of the town's second fire station, which will be located on Oak Level Road, across from the Woodfield Subdivision.

The Nash County Board of Education is voicing its opposition over a recent bill aimed at aligning the school board's districts with Nash County Commissioner districts.
Senate Bill 248 is sponsored by Senators Lisa Barnes and Buck Newton and seeks to change the number of members on the Nash County Board of Education.

Nash County votes down campground

The Nash County Board of Commissioners on Monday denied a request for a small campground near the region's airport.
Property owners of a stretch of land on Millie Field Lane wanted to build a campground with nine campsites and four additional parking spaces.
Without discussion, the board voted unanimously to deny the request during its regular monthly meeting.

Veteran receives unexpected gift

Seegars Fence Company recently installed a $10,000 fence for free for a local combat veteran with a new therapy dog.
An Elm City resident, Robert Morris was born and raised in Nash County with family in Nashville. He enlisted in the Navy ahead of the draft and served a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1971 to '72.
Morris suffers from post traumatic stress disorder and had a stroke in October. His doctor insisted he get a therapy dog.

Man charged with Bend of the River vehicle break-ins

Social media posts helped authorities find and arrest a suspect in multiple vehicle break-ins along Bend of the River Road.
Cody Michael Ulrich, 21, of N.C. 97 in Rocky Mount, faces charges of 23 counts of breaking and entering motor vehicle, five counts of larceny, larceny of firearm and attempted breaking and entering of a motor vehicle. He received a $117,000 bond.

Students plant tree, pinwheels to honor classmate

A tree and blue pinwheels have been planted and placed at the Nash County school where a young girl attended prior to her homicide earlier this year.
Christal Lane, 8, went to school at Coopers Elementary until her death Feb. 7.
Last week, teachers and students along with a local organization came together to plant a tree in her memory and place dozens of pinwheels to commemorate Child Abuse Awareness Month.
