BUNN -- It was one of the most embarrassing losses in Nash Central's baseball history. But give the Bulldogs credit for a quick recovery during a doubleheader last Wednesday against non-league rival Bunn.

Leading by 10 runs, the Bulldogs saw the host Wildcats complete a miraculous comeback with a 13-12 decision in the first game of the twinbill.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics has announced that head basketball coach John Thompson has been appointed as a member of the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee. Thompson's term of service will begin Sept. 1, 2007 and continue through Sept. 1, 2011. He will replace current Division III representative Charlie Brock of Springfield College.

RED OAK -- Still stinging from last week's loss to powerful Wilson Fike, the Northern Nash Lady Knights bounced back quickly with a 7-0 girls soccer victory Monday over NEW-6 foe SouthWest Edgecombe.

The Lady Knights are now 10-1 overall to go with a 2-1 league worksheet.

BUNN -- Gary Smith took his much-improved Nash Central softball squad to Bunn last Wednesday to tangle with a perennial power that, in the past, has had little trouble with the upstart Lady Bulldogs.

But this is a different Central team, though the Lady Dogs are still amazingly young -- but filled with potential.

With a roster dotted with freshmen and sophomores, the Lady Bulldogs took Bunn -- one of the area's premier Class 2-A programs -- to the limit before dropping a close doubleheader.

N-RMS graduation rate at 60 percent
NASHVILLE—In the Nash-Rocky Mount School (N-RMS) system, 952 out of 1583 (or 60.1%) first-time high school ninth graders in 2002-03 graduated with their class last year, in four years or less, according to graduation data released by the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI) last month. N-RMS' graduation rate is 8% lower than the state's average.

Nash-Rocky Mount Middle and High School band students spent Thursday and Friday participating in a band clinic which led up to a concert at the Dunn Center Friday night. Pictured right, middle school band students practice a piece with guest clinician and composer Brian Balmages at Red Oak Middle School. Balmages wrote a piece especially for the students, titled, "Starscapes."

ROCKY MOUNT - A study on the feasibility of making North Carolina Wesleyan College a part of the University of North Carolina system released its findings on Monday. The conclusion was that it is not feasible to make Wesleyan the 17th campus in the UNC system.

Two die in motorcyle accidents
Speed was said to be a factor in two similar motorcycle fatalities that occurred on Saturday.

Phillip Wayne Denton, 30, and Marvin Leon Burgess, 37, were both killed in separate motorcycle accidents on Saturday evening when their motorcycles ran off the road and crashed.

Nashville converting to radio read meters
NASHVILLE - By 2010, the Town of Nashville will be able to read water meters in half the time it takes now.

Nashville is purchasing, in phases, radio read meters that will enable water meters to be read digitally. Currently, it takes two men and seven to eight days to read water meters.

Bailey drug dealer arrested
BAILEY- A five-month undercover investigation led to the arrest of a local drug dealer.

Matthew Brent Fields, 25, of Bailey, was arrested after undercover officers made several large purchases over the past five months. The purhcases included a counterfeit controlled substance. The investigation was a joint effort between the Nash County Sheriff's Office, the State Bureau of Investigation, the Wilson County Sheriff's Office and the Wilson Police Department.

FRANKLINTON - Pardon Nash Central for wanting a little more than a second-place finish from the 2007 Brassfield Commercial Shamrock Classic Girls Soccer Tournament.

Certainly, the Lady Bulldogs were thrilled to earn a runner-up bowl -- the first time Central's girls soccer squad has ever claimed a prize for a strong conference or tournament finish.

Murder charges reduced after two plea guilty
NASHVILLE - Louis T. Speight and Travoy L. Garrett pleaded guilty in Superior Court last Monday to murdering a Castalia man in a robbery attempt.

In exchange for their guilty pleas, charges were reduced to second degree murder. Both were also charged with armed robbery.

N-RMS settles grade split plan
NASHVILLE — Next school year, Red Oak and Winstead Avenue elementary schools will offer grades K-2, and Swift Creek and Englewood will offer grades 3-5. At their work session Monday night, Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (N-RMS) Board unanimously approved Superintendent Rick McMahon's reorganization plan for these schools and placed it on their agenda for an official vote on April 2.

Nashville man steals gas truck
NASHVILLE - A Nashville man was arrested after allegedly stealing a gas truck and wrecking it.

According to Lt. Pat Joyner of the Nash County Sheriff's Office, Marcus Allen Reynolds, 36, of Reams Road in Nashville, was looking for a ride home last Tuesday when he went into a Ferrell Gas storage lot off Old County Home Road and stole a gas trucking, driving it through a fence.

Dog owner found guilty of violating town ordinance
NASHVILLE - Adele Downey Maynard was found guilty of violating the Town of Nashville's noise ordinance and its number of dogs ordinance during a trial last week.

The trial was held in District Court March 13, with Judge Robert Evans presiding.
