ROCKY MOUNT - Leroy Murray, 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on Friday, March 16, 2007. He was born March 3, 1921 in Nash County, son of Matthew Andrew and Elizabeth Savage Murray. Leroy was a retired postal clerk and an avid golfer until he became disabled with Parkinson's disease. Leroy served in the US Army Air Force during World War II flying fifty missions over Europe in a B 17 Flying Fortress. Leroy was also a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, active until his illness confined him to his home.

Man dies in auto accident
A single-vehicle accident left a Raleigh man dead and another injured after a pickup truck ran off the road and into a tree.

Twenty-six-year-old Johnnie Junior Bass, 26, of Raleigh was traveling south on Taylor's Store Road Friday morning when his pick-up truck ran off the road and struck a tree.

t always seems to happen this time of year.

Just as winter starts to break, we get a glimpse of spring and my birthday pops up on the horizon, I get a couple of big signals that I am getting old.

Of course, I always say there's only one alternative to getting old, so none of you who happen to be alive at the time you read this column should complain. And in my case, I've not even gotten to the age where people put up the "Lordy, Lordy" signs.

Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan has announced that 3,180 undergraduate students earned Dean's List honors and 1,091 students were named to the Chancellor's List at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro during the Fall 2006 semester.

School board approves $29 million budget for 2007-08
NASHVILLE — The Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (N-RMS) board unanimously approved the 2007-08 current expense and capital outlay budgets as presented by N-RMS Finance Officer Susan Blackwell in their work session Monday night and will make an official vote on it at their next meeting. With continuation and expansion, the recommended local current expense budget totals $26,740,337, which is $859,653 less than last year. The proposed capital outlay budget totals $2,089,041, up $83,000 from last year.

Jabberwock 2007 is set for Sunday afternoon
The Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc. will present 20 young women in its 34th Jabberwock. Featured in the finale will be these girls displaying their talents in song, dance and drama. The highlights of this event will be the crowning of one of these girls as "Miss Jabberwock."

All-league honorees in NEW-6
ROCKY MOUNT - SouthWest Edgecombe's girls basketball team did the NEW 6 3-A Conference proud with its run to the NCHSAA 3-A state championship game.

But with the end of the Lady Cougars' season came the end of the basketball action for the Twin County area. Once the season ends, All-Conference basketball teams are released, and Nash County was well represented on the league's most honored squads.

Monday at home, the Lady Knights rolled to a 6-0 decision over winless league rival Southern Nash.

Joe McCarthy's Northern Nash club controlled play in the first half, but was only able to send home a pair of goals.

County officials look at space needs study
NASHVILLE – A space needs study was presented to county commissioners during a recessed meeting on Friday.

Ann Collier, of Oakley Collier Architects, P.A., presented the space study to the board, indicating space needs for the Sheriff's Department, Courthouse and Senior Center. As part of the study, Collier met with county employees from each location to determine what the future needs were. From that information, Nash County's Space Utilization Study was formed.

Red Oak studies adding sewer
RED OAK – The Town of Red Oak will commission the Wooten Company to perform a feasibility study on whether a sewer system is possible in town, the board decided at their meeting last Monday night.

Gary Hartong and Chris Thomson, of the Wooten Company, came before the board to discuss the feasibility study. The board, along with Hartong and Thomson, previously met to discuss the possibility of getting sewer services for Red Oak citizens.

Spc. Ryan D. Russell killed in Iraq
Spc. Ryan D. Russell, 20, of Elm City, was killed Monday, March 5 in Baqubah, Iraq when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near his unit. Also killed were Spc. Blake Harris, 22, of Pueblo, Colo. and Pvt. Barry W. Mayo, 21, of Ecru, Miss. Russell joined the military in October 2004 as a health care specialist. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Calvary Division at Fort Hood, Texas. He was deployed to Iraq in October of 2006. His decorations include a National Defense Service Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, an Army Service Ribbon and a Combat Medic Badge.
