School board needs to rethink grading policy
Last week, we reported that Nash-Rocky Mount School system's graduation rate is 8 percent lower than the state average. Only 60 percent of the 2002-03 ninth graders graduated with their classmates last year, 952 students out of 1,583. Gas companies need competition from new alternative sources
Each week, I try to make it back and forth to work on one tank of gas. I wait until I'm on the very last drop, hoping gas prices will come down and I can fill up with 20 bucks. I'm still waiting and soon, I'll be walking. It was over a year ago that everyone was in a panic because gas was supposedly running out. And now, each day, it seems like gas goes up 5-10 cents. They say by Summer, gas will be at $3.00 a gallon. I can't wait.

Kent's point of view on how to be a two-year-old
Thank you all for reading my column this week. I thought I could help Dad get his readership numbers up, because at least this way, his family would read it. Seems they are all afraid they'll make an appearance as a "scarring memory from childhood" or something like that. Anyway, this birthday party stuff is where it's at. I got great presents and a piece of cake that would have choked a horse. I ate it all. Then, just a few minutes later, I felt all tingly and had incredible energy for the next 3 hours.

Holly's turning seven, another big year ahead
Holly's turning seven, another big year ahead
Dear Holly,

"I'm rich, I tell ya," you said, "Filthy stinking rich."

And thus, another chapter was added to "50 Ways to Con Your Dad Before You're 10," book that you're apparently writing. With your 7th birthday here, and at your current pace, you may be able to go ahead and expand to "100 Ways" before you ever get to a publisher. And then, it will be your SECOND book. But more on that later.

Pit bull 'bad dog' profile doesn't fit the breed
Pit bull 'bad dog' profile doesn't fit the breed
Before I bought a house here in Nash County, I looked into renting a home for my husband and our pets. I never got past the question, "what type of pets do you have?"

I have two pit bulls. Most of the time when I responded, I would only say I had one but still, the answer was, "We don't allow aggressive pets."
