Rocky Mount to host series of events to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The City of Rocky Mount and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will honor Dr. King’s legacy through a series of events, including the 26th annual Unity Breakfast. This year’s breakfast, taking place at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of NC Wesleyan College, will feature Dr. Julianne Malveaux. Malveaux has long been recognized as a labor economist, educator, noted author and colorful commentator.

Two locals inducted into Honor Society at Barton

Barton College’s North Carolina Gamma Chapter of Alpha Chi National College Honor Society welcomed 12 new members into the fold during the fall 2013 induction ceremony, including two Nash residents.
Students with a grade point average of 3.5 or better in the top 10 percent of the junior and senior classes are eligible for induction. The minimum grade point average for this induction class was 3.65.

Nashville’s Police Department hosted “Coffee with a Cop” on Friday, January 3rd at Southern Bank on Washington Street. The event has been held numerous times at locations throughout town to give citizens a chance to meet Nashville Police Officers and ask questions, while enjoying coffee and refreshments.

Red Oak extends free water tap offer to potential customers

Red Oak Commissioners voted on Monday, January 6, to extend the offer of a free water tap to potential water customers who sign up for service now. The vote extends the offer indefinitely for as long as the county extends the initial recruitment period and is retroactive to cover those who have signed up since the original deadline of January 2.

NRMPS to host parent sessions to support child’s reading skills

Most parents know that reading with children and helping them practice to read is important, but they may wonder where to begin. Beginning Monday, January 13, Nash Rocky Mount Public Schools (NRMPS) will present a series of three parent resource sessions to help families learn practical research-based strategies to support their child’s reading. NRMPS believes teaching children to read is a team effort.

The staff and members of Benvenue Country Club hosted a toy drive during their employee holiday dinner and breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 14th.  Over 100 gifts were collected and sent to My Sister’s House, Domestic Family Shelter and Support for Victims of Family Violence. Parks appointed to NC Youth Advisory Council

Ricky Parks, of Rocky Mount, was recently appointed by Governor Pat McCrory to serve on the North Carolina Youth Advisory Council.
Parks will serve as chair of the council.
Parks is a supervisor with the Rocky Mount Police Department.

Robbie Davis, Nash County Commissioner and President of Turn Key Contractors, was recently appointed to the North Carolina Building Code Council by Governor Pat McCrory.
Davis will fill the seat designated for a licensed general contractor.

It was wonderful to gather with our church family this first Sunday in 2014. Our choir sang “Something About That Name” for the call to worship. Pastor Aycock welcomed everyone and prayed the invocation. Hymns of worship were “To God Be The Glory” and “Blessed Be The Name.”

LUNCHEON TO PRESERVE HISTORY

In August of 2013, Bethel Heroes 636 ,the local chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy, began restoring and repairing the Confederate monument located in Battle Park.  It was decided at the December meeting of the chapter to join with the SCV Robert Henry Ricks Camp 75 in hosting  a Robert E. Lee/Stonewall Jackson Luncheon to raise funds for the continued repairs and maintenance of the monument.

The Nash County Senior Center delivered over 100 bags of Christmas gifts to area seniors just before the holidays. Santa for Seniors is a collaboration with Walgreens to provide needed items for seniors around the holidays. Walgreens delivered 22 bags for the senior center while Scott Rogers and Chris Bissette, of the Nash County Fire Marshal’s Office, delivered 19 bags. Pictured above, Scott Rogers loads gifts to deliver to seniors on December 19.

Monster Dash yields over $7,000 for United Way
Monster Dash yields over $7,000 for United Way

The 1st Annual Monster Dash 5K Race, sponsored by Nash County Government and the Town of Nashville, yielded great results for United Way Tar River Region.  A check in the amount of $7,283.89 was recently presented to Ginny Mohrbutter, Executive Director for United Way.
The 5K race was held on October 26, 2013 in downtown Nashville.

School Board supports superintendent

The Nash-Rocky Mount School (NRMS) Board supported the superintendent’s recent bid for Richmond City Schools (RCS) superintendent, but they are very pleased that he has withdrawn and will continue at the helm here.
“I’m glad he didn’t go,” said board member Jon Hardy. “He has unfinished business here. I’m glad he decided to stay and finish things he’s begun. We’re real pleased in the direction we’re headed. He’s still here to steer us.”

Nash Health Care looks at community needs

At the December board meeting, the Nash Health Care Board of Commissioners examined a preliminary report regarding an extensive assessment of the needs of the area encompassing Nash, Edgecombe, and Halifax counties. This Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) revealed some telling statistics about the area’s overall state of health and the ability of the community to meet the needs in the current health care environment.

Fire destroys rental house

A fire destroyed a vacant home on Highway 58 South early Friday morning.
According to Chris Bissette, Nash County Deputy Fire Marshal, a call came through around 2 a.m. on Friday, December 27 about a home on fire. The house, at 10218 S NC 58, Elm City, was totally consumed when firefighters arrived, Bissette said.

Nashville man named to NC Ag Board

Governor Pat McCrory recently appointed Bob Sutter to the North Carolina State Board of Agriculture.
Sutter, a Nashville resident and CEO of the NC Peanut Growers Association in Nashville, will represent peanut farmers.
Sutter has been CEO of the NC Peanut Grower’s Association since 1993. The association is an organization of the state’s peanut growers. Its purpose is to promote the production, marketing, and consumption of peanuts through research, education, legislation and other means.

Nash County 4-H Extension Agent Sandy Hall was honored at a state conference with the Victoria Jean Cope North Carolina 4-H Professional Development Award.
The award encourages 4-H agents to continue developing their capabilities with additional education. Hall received the award in November at the statewide annual conference for the NC Cooperative Extension Service.

Nashville man publishes first book

A Nashville man has published his first book and is already working on its sequel.
L. Gregg White  wrote “Of Days In Defiance” after becoming unemployed in 2011. White said he had always wanted to write a book but never had the extra time.
“I always wanted to do it and I had started several,”  White said.
