NC Wesleyan men drop road contests

ROCKY MOUNT -- The men’s basketball team of North Carolina Wesleyan College dropped a pair of USA South Conference road contests last weekend, falling 95-92 at Huntington College on Saturday and 100-76 at LaGrange College on Sunday.
Sophomore Devontae Williams averaged 17 points and eight rebounds over the two games.

“I really didn’t even know who Mr. Kuenstler was,’’ Buffaloe said.
Kuenstler, however, became immediately enamored with Buffaloe’s work -- along with his relationship with his son, Christian.

Bishops ranked second in league

FAYETTEVILLE -- The USA South Athletic Conference has released its 2014 preseason coaches’ poll for baseball, with North Carolina Wesleyan College earning a second-place billing.
The Battling Bishops, under the direction of veteran head coach Charlie Long, received two first-place votes and finished just four points behind preseason favorite Covenant College.

Southern Nash High School’s basketball meeting with Rocky Mount last Friday was ‘Shoot For The Cure Night’ at the SNHS Gymnasium in Stanhope. Players for the SN boys and girls hoops squads ‘sold’ their jerseys and put names on the back of the jerseys of people who have either survived or passed away due to cancer. Northern Nash games postponed

RED OAK -- Inclement weather has forced some changes to Northern Nash High School’s basketball schedule.
Last week’s slated home meeting with backyard rival Nash Central was called off due to snow.
The event will be played Feb. 12 at the Northern Nash HS Gymnasium in Red Oak.

Van Reese Dupree, 68, of Rocky Mount, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. A funeral service was held on Sunday, January 19, 2014  in the Rocky Mount Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. The Interment took place immediately after the Service in Northeastern Cemetery in Rocky Mount.

Castalia man shot during home invasion

A home invasion on Sunday night led to a Castalia man getting shot at his home.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, four black males kicked in the door of a home in the 10000 block of Lancaster Store Road around 8:41 p.m. on Sunday, January 19.
Ortiz Bazan-Trinidad was at home when the men entered the home, allegedly shot him multiple times and demanded money.

Celebrating the legacy of Dr. King

The doors are wide open for youth today, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Linda Woolard told over 100 who attended a breakfast on Monday in honor of Dr. King’s birthday.
Woolard was the guest speaker for the annual event, which is hosted by the Nashville Willing Workers.
Woolard, a Nashville resident, spoke of her experiences working with Dr. King’s family in Atlanta, Georgia.

Locals remember “Nell” Liverman

The Nashville community is mourning the loss of Flora “Nell” Liverman, who passed away last Thursday at the age of 86.
Liverman was best known for her service at Boice Willis Clinic in Nashville. She worked alongside her husband, Dr. Joseph Liverman for over 50 years.
Barbara Boulden worked 20 of those years with the Livermans and said Mrs. Liverman was one of a kind.

Former owner returns to Nashville Diner

After a year hiatus, Tammy Davis has returned to the Nashville Diner.
Davis owned and operated the restaurant for 13 years before selling it in December 2012 due to health issues.
Davis said after getting the okay from her doctor to return to work part-time, she started working just a few hours a day helping the new owners out.
