SN boys keep up the pace

STANHOPE -- Thanks to the recent poor weather, Southern Nash’s boys basketball squad has endured a NBA-like schedule over the past week -- all the while with the Firebirds’ postseason fate hanging in the balance.
Southern Nash, coached by Robbie Kennedy, played five games in seven days -- and ended the period with third place all but clinched in the Big East Conference.

Youth Baseball, Softball and T-Ball registration is open to ages 4-15. Deadline is February 28.
Youth Soccer registration for boys and girls is available to ages 3-15 with a deadline of Feb. 28.

It’s a sound that every Nash Central High School distance runner hears as he or she travels along the training course on the NCHS campus.

NC Wesleyan drops contest at Ferrum

FERRUM,  VA. -- The men’s basketball team of North Carolina Wesleyan College suffered a 90-79 loss at USA South Conference foe Ferrum College on Sunday afternoon.
The Bishops had four players reach double figures, three of which combined for nine three-pointers, but they were unable to overcome the Panthers’ shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor on the day.

Wesleyan splits baseball twinbill

ROCKY MOUNT -- Sophomore Ciro Norzagaray delivered a game-winning walk-off triple in the bottom of the ninth to give his North Carolina Wesleyan College Battling Bishop baseball team a 4-3 win over Eastern Mennonite University in game two of last Friday’s season-opening doubleheader at Bauer Field.
The Royals had taken the first game by a 2-1 score before Norzagaray’s heroics helped secure the split.

Harrison YMCA gymnasts excel again

ROCKY MOUNT -- The Harrison Family YMCA Gymnastics Team hit the road again recently as the club  headed to Raleigh for the Winter Invitational Meet at Raleigh School of Gymnastics. 
Once again, the squad accomplished great success. 
The 9 YMCA competitors ranged in age from 5 to 15 years old and competed at the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Level.

Canes split games heading into break

RALEIGH -- The Carolina Hurricanes entered the National Hockey League’s Olympic break with both a bang and a whimper.
The “bang” was a 5-1 win over the Florida Panthers last Friday night at the PNC Arena.
The Hurricanes led at the end of the first period 3-1 and went on tally one goal each in the second and third stanzas to achieve the win.

FAYETTEVILLE -- The USA South Conference has released its women’s basketball weekly awards for February 10, and North Carolina Wesleyan College’s Kenyata Harris has earned the league’s Rookie of the Week award for the second time this season.
Harris is a freshman guard from Raleigh for NCWC.

Dr. Marc Newman to speak at Celebrate Life Banquet

The Pregnancy Care Center Board of Directors has named Dr. Marc Newman, founder and president of Speaker for Life, as the 2014 Celebrate Life Banquet keynote speaker.
The Celebrate Life Banquet will be held at Englewood Baptist Church on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 7 p.m.  Reservations are required and must be made by Wednesday, February 12th.

Town Council looks at future projects

Nashville’s Town Council gave Town Manager Preston Mitchell some direction in preparing the upcoming budget, during a three-day budget retreat, which began on Friday and ended on Monday.
The retreat was held in council chambers and included discussions on a variety of items, including town vehicles, infrastructure and personnel. Discussions also centered on future projects for the town including ongoing community development projects.

STANHOPE -- Shaking off the rust was destined to be a major factor during last Saturday’s Big East Conference Individual Wrestling Championships at Southern Nash High School.
Heading into the event, schools in Wilson and Nash County had been postponed for four consecutive days due to inclement weather.

RED OAK -- Thanks to a new formula in the Tri-County Conference, there is plenty of life left in Red Oak Middle School’s girls basketball campaign.
In the past, the regular season leader in the Tri-County was saluted as the league champion, but that changed this year when a playoff was instituted for all sports.

Pirates nab 34th ranking

GREENVILLE -- The East Carolina University baseball team received its third preseason national ranking of the season Monday when the Pirates were tabbed No. 34 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
The Pirates, who were picked to finish third in Conference USA by the league’s 13 head coaches, also garnered a No. 29 ranking by Perfect Game, stands No. 38 in Collegiate Baseball’s Fabulous 40 preseason poll and received votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll.

The tradition-rich Tigers are in a rebuilding phase this winter, but veteran head coach Jeff Dodrill still hopes his club can pull off a winning record.

NASH COUNTY -- Last week’s inclement weather forced the postponement of several events as Nash County schools were called off for four consecutive days.
From last Tuesday though Friday, no prep sporting events were held in the county.
Action finally resumed Saturday with the Big East Conference Wrestling Tournament, along with a basketball meeting between rivals Northern Nash and homestanding Rocky Mount.

Williams saluted again

ST. LOUIS, MO. -- Junior Melissa Gilkey,  senior Chris Klimek and senior  Jasmine Williams (Nashville, Nash Central) were each named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for their respective sports, as announced Monday by the Association.
Gilkey was named the UAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and fifth time in her career.

Bradham’s late heroics lift NC Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT -- North Carolina Wesleyan College’s Tamell Bradham made just one field goal last Thursday night, but it proved to be the biggest bucket of the game.
With his team trailing 69-67, the freshman converted an old-fashioned three-point play with three seconds remaining to give his Battling Bishops a 70-69 win over USA South Conference rival Methodist University in Everett Gym on the NCWC campus.
