NC girls take out Gryphons
But the one certainly was huge as the Lady Bulldogs were able to earn an elusive victory over the always-strong RM squad.
With both teams facing undermanned situations, Nash Central adapted to playing without injured standout Timyra Staton to the tune of a 67-53 decision over the Lady Gryphons at the NCHS Gymnasium.
Rocky Mount competed without star J’Kyra Brown, though the East Carolina University signee would return last Friday following a knee injury.
Nash Central would take charge with a 16-2 spurt in the second period. That push gave the Lady Bulldogs a commanding 33-14 advantage at the break.
Point guard Niya Styles enjoyed a strong outing for the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points. Teammates Brittani Strickland and Jaylynn Westry came through with 11 points as Central avenged an earlier setback to the Lady Gryphons.
In the boys game, the powerful Gryphons stopped Central for the third time during the 2012-13 campaign with a convincing 73-53 conquest.
Post Dante Battle delivered 18 points to pace RM, which featured a quartet of double-digit scorers.
Battle added 15 rebounds, but that wasn’t even good enough to lead Rocky Mount as teammate Immanuel King brought down 16 boards.
With the win, RMHS remained tied with Wilson Hunt atop the Big East boys standings. Those teams split their two regular season meetings.
Cole Smith led the way for Nash Central with 13 markers.
The Bulldogs are now 0-3 against RM for the campaign -- two regular season defeats to go with a setback in the championship game of the Nash County Christmas Tournament.
