Nash County Schools lift mask mandate

Members of the Nash County Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted Monday night during a special called meeting to make wearing a mask at school optional.
Staff and students are still required to wear a mask on a school bus or activity bus due to current federal guidelines suggested by the Center of Disease Control (CDC.)

EMS director says current shift hours are cause for concern

Nash County EMS workers are struggling with fatigue which calls for the need to possibly change their hours in the future.
The emergency services department has three different shifts that rotate hours on a 24 hour on, 24 hours off basis daily. Those shifts are the A, B, and C shifts.
About 25 workers are included within each shift.

Gabrielyn Rundle, a fifth grade student at Cedar Grove Elementary, displays her trophy upon winning the Nash County Public Schools district spelling bee. She will now compete at the state's regional contest to be held in Charlotte.
DISTRICT CHAMPION

A fifth grader from Cedar Grove Elementary will be headed to compete in the state's regional spelling bee in Charlotte.
Nash County's district spelling bee was held at the Impact Center Thursday night to determine which student would go to regionals.
Parents watched anxiously as 30 nervous students from the third through eighth grade vied for the top spot.

Charlie Lewis is super ecstatic about turning 100 this Saturday.
He was born February 26, 1922. Lewis grew up in the Leggett area, near Tarboro and Whitakers and lived there for 27 years. In the 1960s, he moved to the Nash County area.

Brush fire crawls 7 acres

A widespread brushfire broke out behind a home in Nashville last Thursday night.
Firefighters from Nashville, Castalia, Red Oak and White Level and the NC Forest Service were all called around 8:36 p.m. to the burning area behind a house on Bunting Road.

Nashville sets farmers market fees for 2022

The Nashville Farmers Market is planning its grand opening for April 22.
Nashville's Town Council approved the vendor fees last Tuesday so staff could move forward with securing vendors.
The vendor fees will mimic the fees for vendors at the Nash County Farmers Market.

Nashville announces spring programming

Town of Nashville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources is gearing up to host a slew of fun events for the entire family.
The first event to kick off is the Music in the Park series, a monthly concert series that will be March 19, April 22, and May 20 at Stoney Creek Environmental Park from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Whitakers man sentenced for drug trafficking

A Whitakers man was sentenced last Friday to 12 ½ years in federal prison for armed drug trafficking.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office received information May 2020 that Tony Darrel Pittman, 42, was distributing drugs around the Rocky Mount area.
An investigation of Pittman ensued for several months. From May and September 2020, a private tipster made controlled purchases of fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine from Pittman.

Bailey man charged with breaking, entering ABC store

A Bailey man was arrested Monday night for breaking and entering the Bailey Nash County ABC store on Deans Street.
Nash County Sheriff's Office deputies responsded to the alarm at approximately 9 p.m. A witness observed the subject breaking the front glass door and entering the business. Another witness told deputies the subject exited the business and ran towards Joyner's Mini Mart. Deputies set up a perimeter and conducted a K-9 track.

Kennedy Miller, a senior studying vocal performance and English in the College of Arts & Sciences, is Carolina's 22nd Marshall Scholar. The prestigious Marshall Scholarship funds graduate studies in any field at up to two institutions in the United Kingdom.

The Baptist Men enjoyed their monthly breakfast meeting on Sunday, January 30.
The youth and children will have a soup and sandwich lunch on Sunday, February 13 following the morning worship. Cost for lunch is $5 and all proceeds go to support the youth and children attending summer missions camps.

Shortages are starting to hit close to home

This supply chain mess was all fun and games until they started monkeying around with my bacon supply and jalapeño cheese puffs.
Now I'm paying attention -- it has hit close to home.
First, my favorite "market style" bacon started disappearing from the cases of one of my regular grocery stores.

It takes passion to serve people for a public service career

I can't imagine pulling a 24-hour shift and having anything else to give, let alone have a good attitude.
I have been burning the midnight oil myself for quite some time and these days it takes a lot more coffee to even get me to the point of having a reasonable conversation with another human first thing in the morning.

This photo originally published in The Nashville Graphic on August 21, 1979. Steve Evans (left) and his brother Keith demonstrated how tobacco is put onto racks prior to curing in a bulk barn. Looking on are guides from the Phillip Morris plant in Richmond who, along with company executives, toured tobacco operation in Nash County that year as guests of the Nash County Extension Service.
