Nash County releases financial report
Nash County Commissioners met on Monday January 7 for the first board meeting of the year. There, Finance Director Lynne Hobbs announced the availability of the 2012 Citizen’s Financial Report, commonly known as the Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR).
The report shows a marked decline in net assets of the county for the second year in a row, as expenses, though declining, still exceed income. More ...

Local family of three face drug charges
The Nash County Sheriff’s Narcotics Division executed a search warrant for 2396 Taylor’s Store Road in Nashville on January 8 finding drugs, firearms and other items which led to the arrest of a  family of three, William Roberson, William Roberson, Jr. and Sandra Roberson.
Items found included digital scales, baggies, smoking pipes, and different smoking devices. Also collected from the residence were five shotguns, one 22 caliber rifle, one SKS rifle and one 9mm semi-automatic handgun. More ...

Nash farmer pleads guilty to tax evasion
RALEIGH — A Nash County  farmer could be sentenced to 10 years in prison this spring after pleading guilty to tax evasion.
Carson Baker Barnes, 77, pled guilty last week to structuring transactions to evade reporting requirements, and aiding and abetting. More ...

NFD receives grant
Senator Kay Hagan announced last week that the Nashville Fire Department will receive a $59,850 grant through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program, which aims to bolster operations and enhance safety at fire departments.
 “I am so pleased that the Nashville Fire Department was selected to receive AFG funding to support our firefighters and the entire Nashville community,” Hagan said. More ...

Nashville to honor Dr. King
Nashville will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at an annual breakfast hosted by the Willing Workers Club of Nashville  on Monday, January 21 at the O.D. Moore building at 806 S. Alston Street in Nashville. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and is open to the public.

Nash General Hospital sees record numbers in ER
Those who need hospital care this season, may need to call ahead for a reservation. The Nash General ER is serving record numbers of patients and those who are admitted often have to wait for hours—even days—to be placed in a regular unit.
The flu is the major culprit. According to Public Relations Director Jeff Hedgepeth, even though the hospital has opened up more beds in order to help deal with the demand, they have still been at or near the roughly 160 bed capacity patient limit since Thanksgiving. More ...

Nashville man arrested for burglary
Nash County Sheriff’s Office  responded to James Bunn Road on January 12 in reference to a larceny.  After an investigation, it was determined that a first degree burglary had occurred. Evidence was located outside of the victim’s residence. Cpl Adams and K-9 Sasha investigated the evidence. Wood product manufactuer to open in Sims
Gov. Bev Perdue recently announced that International WoodFuels LLC will construct a 300,000 metric ton-per-year wood pellet plant in Wilson County. The company will create 32 full-time jobs and invest more than $60 million in Sims over the next three years. The project was made possible in part by a $100,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund. More ...

The schedule for the City of Rocky Mount’s various Citizens  Academies was recently released for 2013. The spring sessions will begin with the  Citizens Police Academy. Scheduled to be held each Tuesday from March 5, 2013-April 23, 2013, citizens may attend and learn about the guiding principles of law enforcement and policies. I had just arrived home from a week out-of-town. No one was at my house; it was pitch dark; there was no moon out. I was unloading my car when I heard a voice yell at me from the darkness.

Sometimes I wonder who the people are that let their pets die at the Shelter.   The ones who allow their dogs to roam at will because, after all, “they are in the county.”  There are some dogs that stick close to home, like my Lady who protects our house and cars...or at least she thinks she does.  The only time she leaves the back door area is when we are outside, when she can stop guarding. More ...
