School board defines reassignment goals
The Nash-Rocky Mount  School Board spent the Monday afternoon workshop session pondering a snag in ongoing plans for the system’s school reassignment. The result of the hour-long discussion was a new directive to the reassignment committee to simplify the feeder patterns from the middle school to the high school level as much as possible and to plan for five middle schools instead of the proposed six. More ...

Nashville approves budget
Nashville’s Town Council approved an $8.5 million budget at the board’s regular meeting on Tuesday night.
The budget is a $697,000 increase from the budget adopted during the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
The budget does not include any water or sewer increases and the property tax rate remains the same.
Town Manager Preston Mitchell reported to council members last month that citizens would not see an increase in their water and sewer bills, since Rocky Mount was not proposing any increases. More ...

County says no more early pay tax discounts
Nash County residents will no longer receive a discount when paying their property taxes early, as commissioners voted Monday night to eliminate the property tax discount program.
In the past, those who paid property taxes prior to September 1 received a one percent discount on their payment.
Nash County Manager Bob Murphy told commissioners that the program has worked well in the past.

Boddie Street home takes hit in weekend storm
A storm quickly moved through Nash County Friday evening, leaving the most significant damage in Nashville.
According to Brian Brantley, Director of Emergency Services for Nash County, the storm caused a tree to fall on a home on Boddie Street in Nashville. No one was injured when the tree fell but the home was damaged.

Board denies Barnes seat on planning board
Lisa Barnes will no longer serve on Nash County’s Planning Board, Commissioners decided on Monday night.
Barnes, along with Keith Davis, were eligible for reappointment to the Nash County Planning Board. Davis, who has served on the board since July 6, 2009 was unanimously reappointed to continue another three-year term. However, Barnes, who has served since June 5, 2006 and was eligible for another term, was not reappointed. More ...

High school graduation ceremonies set for weekend
Nash-Rocky Mount high school graduations will take place this weekend and will be streamed live via the school system website, school system officials announced at this month’s school board meeting on Monday. Graduations are staggered this year so that people may be able to attend or view more than one.
 The ceremonies begin with the W.L. Greene graduation on Friday, June 8, at 9:30 a.m. The graduation will take place at Nash Central Middle School. More ...

Two Bailey men were recently arrested for stealing copper wire off of Progress Energy utility poles.
The Nash County Sheriff’s Office investigated 21 cases of subjects cutting the copper ground wire from Progress Energy utility poles in the Bailey, Middlesex and Spring Hope areas. The incidents occurred between March 21 and May 17. More ...
