Area post offices are feeling the effects of the U.S. Postal Service’s efforts to save money by consolidating services.

A Nashville postal carrier was killed last Wednesday when her car ran off the road and overturned.
The NC Highway Patrol said Melissa Armstrong Biggs, 47, of E. Old Spring Hope, Rocky Mount, was traveling on Fountain Road, near the Highway 111 Intersection in Edgecombe County when she ran off the road to the right and overturned. More ...

FIGHTING CHILDHOOD CANCER
Coopers Fire & Rescue’s Bulldog Brigade once again teamed up with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation this year to raise money to help cure childhood cancer. The challenge was to raise money for the cause and in return have their heads shaved at the firehouse Saturday. At the end of the day an estimated $5,500 had been raised. According to Assistant Fire Chief Jamie Moss a few donations are still trickling in and about 40 people had their heads shaved Saturday. More ...

Student assaulted at Southern Nash High
A 15-year-old student at Southern Nash High School was taken into custody following an assault at the school.
According to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, a 15-year-old female student walked up behind another female student, who is also 15, in between classes and cut her throat with a scalpel. The incident occurred around 9:25 a.m. on Tuesday morning. More ...

NRMS plans budget with $8 million less
The Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (NRMS) system plans on a budget decrease next school year, to the tune of over $8 million.
Due to the decrease in average daily attendance in grades K-3, the NRMS state planning budget for next school year has decreased by $3.76 million, to bring the total to $92.2 million. More ...

A Nashville woman has taken her desire to help animals a step further and started her own rescue group.
Shelley Milburn founded Promoting Animal Welfare in NC, or PAWNC, earlier this month.
PAWNC is a non-profit organization with several goals. Milburn said her primary goal is to educate the public about responsible pet ownership and provide spay/neuter assistance to reduce the number of unwanted animals in the community. More ...

Southern Nash High School was placed on lock down for around 10 minutes on Thursday morning after reports of a student with a gun fighting with another student.

Man killed in lawnmower accident
A Wilson man was killed last week when his lawn mower flipped over on top of him.
Pat Joyner, of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, said 69-year-old Elmer Webb, Jr., of Hornes Church Road in Wilson, was cutting grass on Haywood Drive in Nash County when the accident occurred. Joyner said Webb was cutting grass and ran up an imbankement, causing the lawnmower to flip over on top of him. More ...

Gala to aid My Sister’s House
My Sister’s House is making plans for its annual Spring Gala, scheduled for March 31, 2012 at the Gateway Convention Center in Rocky Mount. Rocky Mount Academy students win annual Young Authors competition
Ten Rocky Mount Academy students were recently recognized by the Nash-Rocky Mount Reading Council as local winners in the annual Young Authors competition.  They were among 20 winners from local school systems.  All of the local winners’ compositions about “North Carolina Treasures” were sent to the state competition, where 15 of the 20 were selected as state winners.
