N-RMS graduation rate at 60 percent
NASHVILLE—In the Nash-Rocky Mount School (N-RMS) system, 952 out of 1583 (or 60.1%) first-time high school ninth graders in 2002-03 graduated with their class last year, in four years or less, according to graduation data released by the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI) last month. Speed was said to be a factor in two similar motorcycle fatalities that occurred on Saturday.

Nashville converting to radio read meters
NASHVILLE - By 2010, the Town of Nashville will be able to read water meters in half the time it takes now.

Nashville is purchasing, in phases, radio read meters that will enable water meters to be read digitally. Currently, it takes two men and seven to eight days to read water meters.  More ...

Bailey drug dealer arrested
BAILEY- A five-month undercover investigation led to the arrest of a local drug dealer.

Matthew Brent Fields, 25, of Bailey, was arrested after undercover officers made several large purchases over the past five months. The purhcases included a counterfeit controlled substance. The investigation was a joint effort between the Nash County Sheriff's Office, the State Bureau of Investigation, the Wilson County Sheriff's Office and the Wilson Police Department.  More ...

Swamp Stompers compete at regional Envirothon event
The middle and high school Envirothon teams from the Christian Homeschool Association of Rocky Mount competed alongside 55 other teams from public, private and homeschools at this years regional event at Camp Willow Run on Lake Gaston. These young people call themselves the "Swamp Stompers I and II," and include high school team members: Seth Bauguess, Emmette Cousins, Nathaniel Hartsell, Joshua Peede, Misty Varnell and middle schoolers: Bailey Austin, Katie Bittner, Aaron Hartsell, Katelynn Olivera, and Ana Stillings.  More ...

Holly's turning seven, another big year ahead

Pit bull 'bad dog' profile doesn't fit the breed
Before I bought a house here in Nash County, I looked into renting a home for my husband and our pets. I never got past the question, "what type of pets do you have?"

UNC-Rocky Mount campaigners should be applauded
The commission appointed to conduct a study to bring UNC to Rocky Mount, housed at NC Wesleyan College, released its opinion Monday that it believes it is not feasible to create the new UNC campus. The report says it would be too costly.

This is really too bad, not just for Rocky Mount, but for our entire county. Bringing an educational facility such as UNC to Rocky Mount would be a huge asset for all of Nash County. More ...

Wesleyan's Thompson appointed
ROCKY MOUNT -- The North Carolina Wesleyan Department of Athletics has announced that head basketball coach John Thompson has been appointed as a member of the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee. Thompson's term of service will begin Sept. 1, 2007 and continue through Sept. 1, 2011. He will replace current Division III representative Charlie Brock of Springfield College. More ...

BUNN -- Gary Smith took his much-improved Nash Central softball squad to Bunn last Wednesday to tangle with a perennial power that, in the past, has had little trouble with the upstart Lady Bulldogs.

But this is a different Central team, though the Lady Dogs are still amazingly young -- but filled with potential.
