A replacement for retiring Nash County Manager Zee Lamb has been selected.
Zee Lamb became county manager of Nash County in December 2013 and will be retiring in January 2022.
Previously, he was the county manager for both Chowan and Bertie County. Lamb had county government experience since the 1980s when he was elected as county commissioner of Pasquotank County and served there for 11 years.

Downtown Nashville will be the fang-tastic place to be Friday afternoon and evening!
Local merchants, town and county agencies will join together to offer a full night of candy and fun on Friday, October 29th.
An outdoor fall festival will be held at Cooley Library from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. featuring games and prizes and activities.

Nashville citizens will see three names on their ballot November 2nd with only two available seats. Newcomer Eddie Thomas along with incumbents, Larry D. Taylor and Kate Burns have all filed for the two seats.
In Castalia, James Edward Alston is the only person who filed for the Mayor's seat. Sadie Harvey Atkinson, Brian Hinkle, and Melissa P. Hinkle all filed to keep their seats as commissioners.

Essex Road residents spoke up at Nashville's Town Council meeting on Tuesday night.
Steve Jones, who lives on Wollett Mill Road but purchased property at 201 Essex Road, said he discovered the home has a failed septic system. He didn't know, however, that the home had septic issues when he purchased the home. He later found out that many of the homes in the Essex Road subdivision have their own septic systems.

The Nash County Senior Center rounded up members of its volunteer posse to thank them for their service.
The senior center held its annual Home Delivered Meals Awards social October 20 with the theme, "Thanks for partnering with us."
About 15 volunteers mingled at tables while enjoying ham and turkey sliders, a fruit platter, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes and freshly prepared lemonade and tea. Some were dressed in cowboy attire, befitting to the theme.

Moderna and Johnson & Johnson booster vaccinations are now available.
According to a the NC Department of Health and Human Resources, (NCDHHS) more North Carolinians can now receive the boosters which became available October 22.
Nash County Health Department Director Bill Hill reported a busy day at the Nash County Health Department with close to 300 vaccinations.

An outreach center in Nashville for individuals in unsafe situations recently celebrated its 40th anniversary October 14 with a ribbon cutting and dedication to one of its longtime supporters.

A Nash County jail convict was apprehended in Nashville Wednesday after escaping the jail while carrying trash out to a dumpster.
After fulfilling his garbage duties, Mark Barlow, 28, fled from jail October 20 around 11 a.m.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office, NC Highway Patrol, Nashville Police Department units, and Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office set up a perimeter around the jail and began their search for Barlow.

Nash County Sheriff's Office arrested Jeffery Dale Hewlin, 33, owner of Carolina Auto Parts and Salvage after an investigation indicated he was a secondary metal recycler in violation of the law in which he was buying catalytic converters.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office has been investigating numerous reports of catalytic converter thefts from motor vehicles. During the investigations, there has been information provided indicating some of these catalytic converters were being sold to secondary metal recyclers within Nash County.

Red Oak Elementary is promoting a drug-free environment for its students as it celebrates Red Ribbon Week from October 25 to October 29.
Red Ribbon Week is usually celebrated in schools annually nationwide from October 23 to October 31 but the elementary school will not observe it on October 25 and October 31 since those are not school days. It is a week that teaches about dangers of drugs and brings drug awareness to children.

Nash Community College, the Town of Nashville and Nashville Elementary School celebrated Arbor Day on Friday, September 24, 2021 by planting an orchard at the elementary school.
"The collaborative effort is part of a plan to fund the planting of a multi-fruit orchard on the campus," NCC Biology Instructor Christine Ricci said. "Not only did this serve to plant the orchard for the elementary school but also served as an opportunity to celebrate Arbor Day for the Town of Nashville, a Tree City."

We wish to do a shout out to Stephanie who works at the Nash County Animal Control Shelter. Ever since the virus changed things, she has been the one to get the photos to us to publish, rather than volunteer photographers. Animal Control is shorthanded, being at two Animal Control officers vs. the normal four. This means that Stephanie also takes on extra duties.

Rocky Mount native Clifton Barnes, who was a reporter and editor at The Nashville Graphic in the 1980s, has won a national writing award for a series of online posts.
Writing for his CapitalSportsNC.com website, Barnes won an Award of Excellence from the DC area-based Communications Concepts through its 2021 Awards for Publication Excellence competition.

Jesus died for the "remission of our sins". We've all heard it repeatedly in our churches and Sunday school classes. But what does the Bible mean by saying that our sins have been remitted?

Matthew 13 records seven parables Jesus told about the mystery of the kingdom of God. The first is the Parable of the Sower. The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares is the second kingdom parable. Both parables draw agricultural pictures of sowing and reaping. But there are critical differences between the two parables.
•The Parable of the Sower is about good seed in good and bad soil.
•The Parable of the Weeds is about good and bad seed in good soil.

Halloween is a seasonal, visible manifestation of what truly is an everyday, invisible reality.
To read the stories of Jesus, as revealed Scripture, is to meet a man who undoubtedly lived his life being fully aware that evil was a present reality.
Jesus did not assume evil lurked, Jesus knew it.

Red Oak Baptist Church honored their pastors, Chris Fowler and Nate James, on Sunday, October 24 during Pastor Appreciation Month. They received many expressions of thanks for their service and leadership in the church and community.

It was a beautiful day at Peachtree this past Sunday for our Observance of Believer's Baptism. Our members gathered to celebrate with Ms. Irene Page as she stepped into the pool to have her sins washed away and to except the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
The Sanctuary flower arrangement today is presented to glorify God by Mr. James Shepherd in loving honor of his wife, Brenda, who will celebrate her birthday on October 26th.

Some folks will disagree and might be offended by this week's column.
Free speech is important and it might have consequences and sometimes people might get their feelings hurt sometimes.
That's not altogether a bad thing. I've learned a lot by having my feelings hurt and at times it's proven to be great motivation.

Billionaire Elon Musk sent his Space X Dragon capsule and its inspiration four crew into space recently. Their mission was a long, protracted one. They embarked on the space journey with the plan to orbit earth. As such, they would be the first civilians to do it, orbit the planet. All went as planned. At the flight's conclusion, the dragon capsule carrying the crew, splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean near Florida.

For most area teams, devastation would have ensued in the preseason when Franklinton's De'Nyla Harlan, arguably the top returning player in the Big East, moved to Georgia.

LOUISBURG -- Nash Central High School's boys soccer victory at Louisburg on October 14 featured several admirable performances -- both on and off the field.
The Bulldogs won the match by an 8-1 margin against homestanding Louisburg in Big East Conference action at historic Patterson Field on the LHS campus.
Eight different scorers found the back of the net for Nash Central, but the heroics didn't end there.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Louisburg's Shamir Sheppard is known more for his offensive excellence, but he made the defensive play of the game during the Warriors' road victory last Friday night over Nash Central in Big East football action at The Dawg Pound on the NCHS campus.
With LHS clinging to a two-point lead in the fourth quarter and Nash Central having just scored, Sheppard was inserted into the game as a situational substitute at linebacker in an attempt to stop the Bulldogs' potential score-tying 2-point attempt.

STANHOPE -- Southern Nash finished off its unbeaten campaign in the Big East Conference in style last Wednesday against the Franklinton Red Rams.
Playing at home and celebrating Senior Night, the Firebirds were able to edge Franklinton by 1-0 in the league regular season finale for both squads.
Southern Nash, which had already clinched the Big East Championship, closed at 19-2-1 overall to go with a sterling 14-0 mark in the always-competitive Big East.

STANHOPE -- Down one point and with the ball placed three yards from the end zone, Northern Nash starting quarterback Keno Jones led his offense out for a two-point conversion attempt that would shape the way fans viewed the 2021 season for years to come.
