Sue Leggett will serve her first full term on the Nash County Board of Commissioners, as voters elected her to continue serving District 4.
Leggett, a Republican, defeated challenger Morris Roberson, a Democrat, in the general election, according to unofficial results.
Leggett received 5,241, or 66.80 percent, of the votes compared to Roberson's 2,605, or 33.20 percent, of the votes.
Leggett was appointed to the Nash County Board of Commissioners in January of 2019, filling the vacated seat of Lisa Barnes.

Nash County native Roy Cooper has been elected to serve another term as Governor of North Carolina.
Cooper, a Democrat, received 2.8 million votes, or 51.49 percent of the votes, according to unofficial results.
Cooper was challenged by Dan Forest, a Republican, who received just over 2.5 million votes, or 47.05 percent of the votes.

Nash County native and North Carolina House Representative Lisa Stone Barnes will be going back to the North Carolina General Assembly next year, but this time as a North Carolina Senator.
After a successful primary bid, Barnes unofficially won the General Election with 55.05 percent of the vote, or 60,870 votes.

Five NC District Judge seats were up for grabs in District 7 during the 2020 General Election.
Castalia native and Spring Hope resident Anthony W. "Tony" Brown was re-elected to serve one of those seats.
Brown, a Democrat, received 62,379 votes, or 54.20 percent of the votes, according to unofficial results.

The 2020 General Election brought out 75.71 percent of Nash County's registered voters to the polls.
Nash County has 68,677 registered voters. Of those, 51,996 cast Ballots in the 2020 General Election.
A majority of those votes were cast prior to election day.

A Nashville church considered one of the oldest churches in Nash County is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
Galatia African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church hosted a community event this past Saturday to kick off its anniversary celebration.
The church featured music and testimonies and also gave away food to those who stopped by. Candy was also given to the youth who came out.

A Nash County resident had the chance of a lifetime recently, when she was asked to sing the National Anthem at a local rally with Vice President Mike Pence.
Brenda Jones said she was shocked to receive the phone call just a few days before the rally, which was held on Saturday at the Rocky Mount-Wilson Airport. Jones said someone had heard her perform at a local rally and called asking if she'd be willing to do the same at the Nash County GOP sponsored rally for Pence.

A sergeant with the Nash County Sheriff's Office was presented with a lifesaving award during the regular meeting of the Nash County Board of Commissioners.
Sergeant Stan Ricks was presented the Meritorious Lifesaving Award by Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone on Monday morning.
Ricks was instrumental in helping save the life of someone whose vehicle became submerged during an accident.

The Nash County Health Department reported that it had received seven death notifications last week.
The deaths were as a result of COVID-19.
Of the seven, five were females and two were males. Four were in the 70's, one was in the late 60's, one in the early 90's and one in the late 80's. Three of the seven patients had no underlying conditions while the remaining four had underlying conditions.

The Nash County Sheriff's Office is investigating after human remains were found on Sumler Road in Castalia.
The remains of a human body in the dry/skeletonized stages of decomposition were found on Wednesday, October 28.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office received a call for service around 1:03 p.m. after the discovery of the remains were found near the entrance of Sandy Creek Gameland located at 11872 Sumler Road in Castalia.

A Nashville man has been arrested and charged with stealing farm equipment and reselling it.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the area of Watson Seed Farm Road and Massengale Road on September 5 in reference to a John Deere tractor being stolen. During the investigation, it was discovered that the tractor had been sold to Louisburg Tractor in Franklin County.

Spring Hope residents showed they are in favor of allowing the sale of mixed beverages, as voters approved a liquor by the drink referendum.
The referendum was on the 2020 general election ballot for Spring Hope, with 69.52 percent of voters, or 479 voters, voting in favor of the referendum.
Two hundred and ten voters, or 30.48 percent of voters, voted against the referendum.

Frist, please educate yourself on puppy mills before you purchase. If you have to have them shipped to you and don't visit... for sure it is a puppy mill pup.

Lights of Love, an annual community event aimed at honoring and celebrating loved ones during the holiday season, is now open and accepting commemorative recognitions through November 22.
"Lights of Love is a beloved tradition that our community enjoys to kick off the holiday season," said Kathleen Fleming, development officer for the Nash UNC Health Care Foundation.

"He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea." (Micah 7:19)
Several years ago, my home computer had been acting kind of crazy. It would reboot itself when I checked my e-mail. At other times, it would just inexplicably crash or shut down.
I asked a friend about it. He told me that I had so many corrupt files on my hard drive that the operating system was getting confused.

You cannot wait upon God without learning to truly trust Him. And you cannot exercise your hope in Him if you are always given everything immediately (Rom 8:24-25). But when we have only His promise to rely upon--with absolutely no visible evidence of answered prayer--then our faith is put to the test and can grow (2 Cor 5:7).
For this purpose, the Lord will intentionally put adverse conditions in our path so we will choose to believe Him rather than focus on our circumstances--which is what usually gets us in the most trouble.

Red Oak Baptist Church is still collecting Operation Christmas Child boxes! Boxes filled with toys, games, stuffed animals, and more are due Sunday, November 15. Boxes are being collected in the Family Life Center. There goal is for everyone to pack at least one more than before. Don't forget the $9 for each shoebox. Each box is a child who will be reached with the gospel.

By the time you are reading this, we will most likely know who our President is going to be for the next four years. As I am writing this, it is well before the election results, but that really doesn't matter as it pertains to what I want to say today.
When viewing the totality of the life of Jesus, I would argue that the primary focus of his public 3 year ministry was the Kingdom of God.
Why do I say that? Let me explain.

Last week at Cooper's Elementary School, the students enjoyed the staff dressing up for "Staff Book Character Day." The Seven Dwarfs, Old McDonald, Charlotte's Web, a Unicorn, a Dalmatian and many other book characters were spotted all around the school.
This past Wednesday night, Christian Fellowship Church held their "Trunk or Treat" for the community children. On Sunday, CFC held Pastor Appreciation Day to honor all of their pastors.

In February, North Carolina Wesleyan College announced that award-winning actress Sharon Lawrence would be their April 2020 commencement speaker. Later, due to ongoing concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the College announced that the ceremony would have to take place virtually. Lawrence still took the time to send the graduates her congratulations and encouragement via video, with the hope that she would be able to address them in-person at the December ceremony.

The club celebrates it's 65th anniversary this year, and this donation represents the 44th consecutive year the club has supported the center. The donation will be used to provide a full Christmas to many of the center's challenged residents.

First Carolina Bank recently announced the hiring and appointment of H. Lankford Dunton, III as Market Executive for the Rocky Mount area market.
Dunton graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as the North Carolina Bankers Association School of Banking in Chapel Hill and he has over 18 years of experience in the banking industry. He previously served as a market executive, commercial relationship banker and most recently as a city executive for United Bank.

Nash Community College students will benefit from $17,000 in scholarships awarded by the Rocky Mount Rotary Club from proceeds raised through the 2020 Tackle the Tar. The event originally planned for May 16, 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Being new to the community, I am truly overwhelmed by the impact of Tackle the Tar and also the commitment to education in this area," NCC President Lew Hunnicutt said. "The annual event is a testament to the teamwork, passion and spirit that exist in the Twin Counties."

The Peachtree Baptist Church WMU will participate in the 2020 Appalachian Christmas Outreach Backpack Ministry. The Appalachian Coalfield Ministry is seeking to meet the physical and spiritual needs of those living in the Appalachian area. The sign-up sheet is in the narthex. Statewide goal is 18,000 backpacks. You do not need to be a member of Peachtree Baptist Church to contribute. We have received commitments for 20-plus backpacks. The list of names is in the narthex.

Take a deep breath, dear reader: this week's column is to remind you that the world is not all COVID-19, riots and elections.
By the time you read this, the election will be over. The shouting will likely continue for some time, but at least the ads, mail flyers and signs can go away.
And while "the virus" is real and still quite dangerous, regardless of who the winners were Tuesday night, you can count on the storyline changing one way or the other.

The library has a new slogan "More than just books" You will be able to see this slogan on our new awning that we are expecting to be delivered any day now, and may I add there is a new sign at the road.
We now have a sign on the building too. Library science has emerged over the years; with keeping up with the trends of technology.

STANHOPE -- Even though they only played six games, the Southern Nash Firebirds gained a measure of momentum during the 2020 baseball season.
SNHS head coach Todd Brewer hopes to trend will continue to rise upward as the Firebirds prepare for the coming campaign.
SN went 3-3 last spring before the rest of its schedule was cancelled due to COVID concerns.

NASH COUNTY -- The Big East Conference has announced its league schedule for the shortened 2020-21 volleyball season.
Nash County squads Southern Nash, Northern Nash and Rocky Mount will participate, along with Wilson Hunt, Wilson Fike and Franklinton.
Action will begin November 16 with the following season-opening matchups:

NASH COUNTY -- There are few guarantees in the COVID Era, but there is always hope -- and that is an intangible Nash County middle school coaches, administrators and athletes are clinging to these days.
The county's middle schools are still planning to have some type of a season in all sports, beginning in January.

GREENSBORO -- The Atlantic Coast Conference and its television partners have announced the following football times and networks for games scheduled for this Friday and Saturday.
The list is as follows:

RALEIGH -- Murray Field at St. David's School in Raleigh is one of the more important venues in the history of the Faith Christian School football program.
In 2018, the Patriots upset the St. David's Warriors 24-20 in the NCISAA Division I Eight-Man Football State Championship game in the school's second season with an active football program.

NASH COUNTY -- The Big East Conference will begin its 2020-21 schedule on November 16 with meets at two league sites.
Northern Nash, under the direction of coach Jeff Dodrill, is the defending conference boys team champion.
