5508.Dale Watson to perform at Nash Arts
Some say he’s put the “C” back in Country Music, but Dale Watson prefers to call his own genre of music Ameripolitan. During the time he released his latest album, “From The Cradle To The Grave,” Watson was quoted saying, “I’ve been trying to come up with a name the best describes this music that me and folks similar do. When folks ask, I hesitate, down right embarrassed really, to say country. I didn’t used to be that way, but with the change in country, the term doesn’t mean the same as it used to. If you say traditional, or old, or western swing most folks think ‘retro’ and dismiss it without hearing it. I wanted a name that didn’t say country anything and didn’t give anyone a preconceived idea. I came up with Ameripolitan. I even put it in Wikipedia defined as: Original music with ‘prominent’ roots influence.”

The Spring Hope Board of Commissioners are discussing the possibility of adding LED lights to areas of the town that are dim.Spring Hope resident and member of the Spring Hope Chamber of Commerce Allen Barbee proposed the idea.He said lights should be added to the section on Highway 581 where drivers come off of the Spring Hope/Bailey exit from either US-64 West or US-64 East. "Basically, you have one light at each ramp entrance and exit and then one that will kind of light up the bridge itself," he explained.

5573.Surviving the new economy
Some days, this whole “economic crisis” can really get you down. For me, a Nerf gun, some homemade ice cream, church and a bluegrass jam put a real dent in it. More on that later in the column. There are plenty of talking heads on TV that can explain the current economic situation so well that no one understands it. These folks are called “academics.” which is a Greek word that means “never worked in the Real World, and have no concept of how things actually work.” The Greeks were very good at shortening phrases.

5577.Why stop at living green? Inconvenient truths
Last week, many of you may have noticed on one of the major broadcast networks a recurring theme of “Green” was a major part of the plot — and on some shows, we use the word “plot” loosely — in each show. Since “being green” or acting in an environmentally conscious way is considered largely a Liberal cause, the event was a chance to “raise awareness.” Of course, had the same thing occurred on the Fox Network, or been a Conservative cause, it would have been called by its more common name of “brainwashing.”

5578.Urban Legends book is quite entertaining
They say an education that rocks your foundation of knowledge and makes you think in ways you’ve never thought before is about the best education you can experience. I can agree with and say that East Carolina University offers that in spades. As I work towards a master’s degree in English, I’ve had many moments – just through the first half of this journey– that have made me wonder, “How can I be this age and not read/learned/known that?”

5581.July 4th is all about symbols and celebration
As we head into what should be one of the nation's most joyous holidays, July 4th, we do so on the heels of a whirlwind of events and attitudes that make some think our amazing republic is coming apart at the seams. It seems no one person or party has someone willing to stand up and tell us how to keep our great nation great. But it is just as well, for our electorate is highly unlikely to vote for someone willing to tell us what we need to hear as opposed to what we want to hear.

Though the convention includes many social events for Ruritans to enjoy, the three-day convention also is a chance for Ruritan National to install its new officers and say goodbye to past ones. This year, Ruritan National said goodbye to Nash County resident Wayne Outlaw, who served as the 2008 Ruritan National President.

5583.What exactly are we stimulating?
Does it even matter how much it costs anymore? I am, of course, referring to the “Economic Stimulus Bill” of 2009. Once you start talking about hundreds of billions of dollars, it gets beyond my comprehension. Admittedly — as many teachers at Southern Nash and later, Atlantic Christian College can attest — my math isn’t always so good. But I do think the last total I saw mentioned on the Economic Stimulus Bill amounted to the United States spending $1 million a day for the next 3,000 years.

5584.Why my summer vacation was so interesting
Last week, I was lucky enough to take 1 3/4 days off from work for a long weekend of a vacation. Of course, Kristi and I took the three kids, so I actually worked harder than I do at work. This year, we decided to do something totally different and try our first bluegrass music festival. This one was in Mineral, Virginia, a little town with a commercial district only slightly larger than Momeyer — but able to draw some of the biggest names in the business like Rhonda Vincent, Ralph Stanley and Doyle Lawson.

5588.Vets of lesser known conflicts deserve respect
Many articles have been written over the years about Veterans Day. In recent years, many specifically have been geared towards how we should view our Veterans — with gratitude and respect. This has been particularly important since there was an era — glorified in movies, film and in the memories of “self-proclaimed hippies of the ‘60s” — in this country when military personnel were very much treated with disrespect.
