JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Petty Officer 2nd Class Alia Teamer, a native of Rocky Mount, serves with Patrol and Reconnaissance Squadron (VP) 45 based out of Jacksonville, Florida. The squadron's primary mission is to undertake maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.Teamer, a 2016 graduate of Rocky Mount High School, joined the Navy six years ago.

NCSO deputy noted for service, saving lives

NASHVILLE - Spring Hope Commissioner William Thomas Toney Jr., a former Nash County Sheriff's Deputy, has officially ended his law enforcement career as of May 17, when a career celebration was held for him at the Nash County Courthouse.Toney, who was elected in November 2023 with the most votes of any candidate in a five-person race for two Spring Hope Commissioner seats, served with the Nash County Sheriff's Office from December 2014 until he was injured on duty on February 4, 2021, during a traffic stop on I-95.

At Beulah Church of Christ, we had a really inspirational prayer vigil last week. It began Friday at 12 noon and lasted until Saturday at noon. Everyone who participated really was blessed, and really felt a special closeness to God. Sunday, many members were commenting on how much it really meant to be a part of the vigil.

5218.RMA holds graduation
Rocky Mount Academy held its graduation ceremony Friday afternoon.  The local independent school handed out diplomas to 42 students, tying with the Class of 2010, for the most graduates in the school’s 43-year history.  Also, with this class, the school tops the 1000 mark on alumni of the institution.

When Freda Roberts bought her home on Main Street in Castalia, she soon discovered her property contained a piece of Castalia’s history. A small cemetery sits next to the home, many of the headstones and markers destroyed. After talking to town residents and doing a little research on her own, Roberts discovered that Captain John Adam Harrison was buried there.

GOLDSBORO -- Prestigious state berths were at stake last Saturday as Nash County’s top high school performers traveled to take part in the Class 3-A Eastern Swim Regionals. The county swimmers didn’t disappoint, and several of them earned state spots thanks to Top-12 regional finishers. The Class 3-A State Meet will be held this coming weekend at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

5230.Hometown Heroes Annual Road Tour visits Nashville
Nashville caught a  quick glimpse of some true heroes Monday. The Annual Road Tour charity ride supporting Hometown Heroes stopped in Nashville for lunch Monday while making its way back to Mecklenburg County. Approximately 50 bikers drove into town, all of whom had been riding since Friday to raise money to assist families with kids who have terminal illnesses or have debilitating injuries due to tragic accidents. The group started its round trip from Matthews, N.C.

The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education elected a new chairperson Monday and voted on the composition of a new school reassignment committee to help determine the new school assignments for the 2013-2014 school year. The meeting took place on Monday, January 9 in Nashville. Former vice-chairwoman of the school board, Evelyn Bulluck, was voted in as the new chairwoman of the Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education, replacing Robert Jenkins at the post.

Savannah Frye wins 2013 competition

Nash Arts held its eighth annual Nash County’s Got Talent competition last week showcasing local artists. Nashville resident Savannah Frye won first place in the competition finals Friday night winning the $1,000 prize.Frye competed in the talent show last year making it to the top ten. She again made it to the top ten this year and then to the top five, impressing the judges with her soulful voice singing “At Last” by Etta James and “Feeling Good.”

Last week was a busy week for Peachtree folks. They worked together to make slaw, eye and cut up potatoes, cook the pigs, chop and season the pork and then serve the plates. The take- out plates had to be delivered and the eat-in plates served. The clean up afterward was a big job also. Many people helped and everyone worked hard. It was a happy and bonding experience. Appreciation is expressed to all who helped and to all who ate barbecue and made donations.

It was a rainy winter day as folks gathered at Peachtree for worship. Pastor Whitehouse chose as his topic “The Most Dangerous people in the Church”.  It was based on the parable of the “Wheat and the Tares” found in Matthew 13.  He said that they are the people in the church who do not truly accept and trust Jesus.  They are dangerous because they want to do God’s work, within their own strength.

RED OAK - Red Oak Middle School started a boys basketball program in 2002, and the hits have been coming ever since. The Tigers have never had a losing season, and have won at least 10 games in seven of the school’s eight boys hoops campaigns. Red Oak has also won three conference championships, and they’re working on a fourth in 2009-10.

Brother Bob Watkins welcomed everyone to Sunday School. There were 93 including 3 visitors present. 2 of our visitors were Rev. and Mrs, Jessie Caton. Several years ago he was our interim pastor for a while. We all loved them and I think they like us too. They continue to visit from time to time. Allie Farmer read the Bible verse today. Thank you. SPRING HOPE- A potential extension of the "grace period" for Spring Hope water users was the topic of some pointed conversation at the Jan. 6 town meeting, but the billing policy ended up being left "as is" by unanimous vote.Requested as an agenda item by new commissioner Antonio "Danny" Toney, the discussion centered on the town's current water billing system. Its bills are mailed out the first of the month, reflecting service given the prior month, with payment due on the 20th.

ROCKY MOUNT -- When B.W. Holt came to Rocky Mount to be its head football coach, he really thought it would be a five-year experience. Rocky Mount fans should remember that he gave them six. But, unfortunately for them and his players, there will not be a No. 7. Holt, 64, handed in his resignation to Rocky Mount principal Leon Farrow last Tuesday. The football coach, who by chance, was the Gryphons’ choice as its gridiron leader in July of 2003 when their original replacement for former head coach John Hammett resigned after eight days, said he was done.

5257.Parker, Moore inducted into NC 4-H Hall of Fame
Two Nash County residents were among the nine recognized on Monday in Raleigh for the 2017 North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame. Agnes Moore and Parker Phillips were each selected to be a part of the North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame after being nominated locally. In June, both were inducted into the Nash County 4-H Hall of Fame. The North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame Award was established in 2009 as part of the Centennial Celebration.

On Sunday morning the emphasis of the worship service at Peachtree was the North American Missions and Annie Armstrong Easter Offering.  A short video was viewed showing mission work in Miami, [the birth place of Pastor Whitehouse]. The needs there are enormous and Pastor Whitehouse was acquainted with some of the missionary personnel there. The sermon topic was “Hope for the Hurting” based on scripture from Mark 2:1-11.

SPRING HOPE - After six months of work, a Community Economic Development plan for the town of Spring Hope is complete, with results presented at the May 6 town board meeting and formally adopted.Among the possibilities presented were putting apartments in downtown buildings, creation of a Spring Hope Historic Association, a Historic Homes Tour, and a "Walk of Fame" sidewalk featuring handprints or footprints from actors who film movies in the Spring Hope area.

Pastor David Eidson welcomed members and our numerous visitors that worshipped with us Sunday morning.  Our guest speaker was Kaye Gurganus from the Pregnancy Care Center.  She encouraged our continued support of the upcoming walk to raise money for the center.

WILSON -- Wilson Fike senior forward Jeremy Atkinson did all he could to keep Nash Central from winning its NEW 6 basketball matchup with the Golden Demons last Friday night. Atkinson, on his Senior night, came up with a Herculean 40-point, 20-rebound performance. And yet, it wasn’t enough to fend off the hot-shooting Bulldogs in a 78-64 Nash Central victory.

5263.Middlesex lift stations in need of repair
After a two-hour closed session meeting, Middlesex Commissioners voted to allow a contractor to put together price estimates for three lift stations that are in dire need of maintenance.Russell Underwood, of Charles R. Underwood, Inc., spoke to commissioners at the start of the board’s regular meeting on Monday morning. Underwood provided a report of the town’s 11 lift stations, which range in age from five to 35 years old.

On Sunday morning Peachtree Church held a service honoring law enforcement, emergency and fire personnel and commemorating officers who have fallen while serving.  It was an inspiring service that was planned and conducted by Ricky Tucker.  He is a Deacon at Peachtree and is employed by the NC State Capital Police and is in a unique position that enables him to lead this service.

DANVILLE, VA. -- The women’s basketball team of North Carolina Wesleyan College dropped a heartbreaking decision at Averett University on Sunday, falling 65-63 in USA South Conference play. Sunday at Beulah Church of Christ we had a really great home coming! We want to say thank you  and God bless you to all members, past members and guests who attended, making it a really good annual homecoming. The minister was Reggie Webb from Edenton. We were glad his wife Nancy could be with him. About forty years ago Reggie was in a bad car accident and has been in a wheelchair since that time. He has never let this stop him from serving God.

NASH COUNTY -- About 16 months ago, both Northern Nash pitcher Tyler Joyner and Rocky Mount outfielder Brian Goodwin, as rising juniors, announced their verbal commitments to play college baseball. Last week, they stayed true to their word by putting it in writing. Both, now seniors, signed national letters of intent to those schools. Joyner, who grew up an East Carolina sports fan, signed with the Pirates and head coach and Rocky Mount resident Billy Godwin.

5290.Bowden’s state channel cat record is reinstated
RALEIGH -- It was a chunk of shrimp that landed Rocky Mount angler E.J. Bowden his state record channel catfish back in 1970 and it was a stack of papers that gave him back the state record title nearly 39 years later.  On Sept. 1, 1970, Bowden caught the state record catfish, which weighed 23 pounds, 4 ounces from City Lake in Rocky Mount, only to see it broken less than a year later by a catfish that weighed nearly 18 pounds more.

The folks at Peachtree were tired but happy on Friday Evening when they finished the BBQ plate sale. The men did a good job of cooking the barbecue – it was very tasty. The women enjoyed the fellowship as they worked to prepare plates to go out. The camaraderie among all who participated was outstanding. The support of all those who purchased plates, and otherwise supported the event, is greatly appreciated.

NASHVILLE - In response to public request, half of the regularly scheduled Nashville Town Council meetings for 2025 will be conducted during morning hours, as opposed to the usual nighttime routine.Council members voted Dec. 3 to adopt a new town meeting schedule in which the first of two monthly meetings, routinely held on the first Tuesday night, will start at its usual 7 p.m. time - but the second monthly meeting will shift both to a different day and time, happening on Wednesday with a start time of 9 a.m.

Sunday morning Sunday school began at 9:45 at Beulah Church of Christ. Everyone was welcomed by one of our elders, Earl Cary. After announcements were made we sang Happy Birthday to Mrs. Dorothy Fisher and also to her brother who was in Virginia. Mrs. Fisher put money in the birthday bank for herself and also for her brother, Tom Callahan. He has been really sick and we were glad to hear he is a little improved and planned to attend his church on Sunday. May God bless him and his family.

Spring is officially here and the weather over the week-end was just about perfect.  On Sunday Pastor Whitehouse chose as his sermon topic, “Conflict in the Church”.  It was based on scripture from Galatians 2: 11-14.  Paul was addressing issues in the early church that were causing conflict.  Many conflicts arise from trivial, non-biblical matters.

5298.Being so social can make you miss a lot
It really struck me at a recent youth soccer game how being able to stay in touch with friends and family can be a really bad thing.My middle son Kent was playing in his last preseason jamboree before his Academy team starts traveling. The opposing team earned a corner kick, and as the opposing player set the ball up, two adults walked so close to the field, I thought for just a second that maybe they were coaches.
