5103.Remembering some outstanding people
This week brings sad news for Nashville and Nash County.Though he had been retired since 2018, it's still hard to digest the news that Nashville's legendary entrepreneur, Wayne J. Land, passed away this week.He started his business venture operation in a small country store. He didn't start out a wealthy man nor a man who had deep pockets for investments. He wasn't born into a family who had money to hand out either.

5104.Spring Hope votes to buy tasers for police
Spring Hope police officers will now be equipped with tasers, after the Board of Commissioners approved the department’s request during their meeting on Monday night. Commissioner Bill Newkirk voted against the request. The item was brought before the board last month by Spring Hope Police Officer Clint Smith. Smith cited an arrest that occurred on July 26 as an example of why officers should be allowed to carry a taser. In that incident, Smith was on duty alone and responded to a man under the influence of alcohol. After Nash County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to assist in the arrest, the man charged at officers, forcing officers to use pepper spray. In the end, Smith told officers the pepper spray did not work and officers has use their batons and flashlights to subdue the suspect.

So, I got this email from the power company, and maybe you did, too. The subject line read that the company wanted to save me money. I've gotten several of these lately offering "tips" that might help lower my bill. The tips including things that certainly would never occur to the common person, with one basic theme: use less electricity and your bill will go down. However, this email was even bolder, and I suppose I'd seen this offer before enclosed in my monthly bill.

5127.Current abstinence program is at risk
Dear Editor: For the past 13 years the “Worth Waiting 4” abstinence program has partnered with the Nash-Rocky Mount School System to provide our young people with a positive message about sexual abstinence and making healthy choices as teens. The program has received outstanding reviews from students, parents, teachers and administrators. Many young lives have been touched with this life-changing message. However, this positive message for our youth is now threatened by a recently introduced bill in the General Assembly. The “Healthy Youth Act-HB88” is a radical attempt by Planned Parenthood and Equality NC (the state’s largest homosexual advocacy group) to change our current abstinence until marriage program. This bill would open up the door to teaching students that any “committed relationship” is equivalent to marriage. This means the standard would be changed from a “risk elimination” approach to sex education to a “risk reduction” one. The “risk reduction” approach is a dangerous way to counsel teens about sexual activity. It basically breeds promiscuity and increases the possibility of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy.

Imagine you lived during the days of Jesus. You were able to see and hear the ministry of Jesus in person. Somehow, you finagle your way to the front of the large crowd, close enough to speak to Jesus. What would you ask or say to him in that moment? That scenario is the occasion of the text. Luke 12:13 reads: "Someone in the crowd said to him, 'Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.'" In Jewish custom, the firstborn son was the heir of the father's estate, executor of his father's will, and recipient of the lion's share of his father's wealth.
