403.We're growing, like it or not!
This week's edition (front page) brings the announcement of a 160-acre subdivision proposed, and approved, in Castalia. I never thought I'd see a time where that size of a development would be planted in the tiny town of Castalia. The town is known for its long-time July 4th Celebration and hospitality plus quite a heritage dating back 150 years. It's also known for its small boundaries and rural flavor. There seemed to be some opposition to the proposal, which isn't surprising.

Last week, people in Hawaii and elsewhere got a huge scare when an emergency alert went out that a ballistic missile was inbound to the island/state.For nearly an hour, people there thought the world, or at least their world, was coming to an end. Then, suddenly, another alert went out saying the whole thing was just a mistake. 409.You have to get dirty to write a book in 40 short years
For as long as I can remember, I've been a reader. First, it was Curious George, Dr. Seuss, and those Sunny Books Mama bought me at White's Supermarket once a week when we bought groceries. They were 19 cents each.Soon enough, it was choices from the Bookmobile out of Braswell Library, a Godsend for those of us in rural areas who didn't get out much. Whenever I had a question, I was told to go look it up in the World Books. They were Google for a lot of folks for a large chunk of the 20th century.

462.Son’s first baseball game - priceless
The two ticket stubs will go in my dresser drawer in a little envelope. They won’t ever have a monetary value, they weren’t at a game of any sporting significance, but they might as well as have been. On Sunday, I took my oldest son Kent (a.k.a. “Junior”) to his first baseball game. It was a Carolina Mudcats game, a pretty high level of play for those who took time to notice. I don’t know who had the most fun, the four-year-old or me. Now, before we get too far along, this isn’t one of those nostalgic, heart-tugging, Hollywood-fabrications of a father-son trip to a baseball game. We didn’t sit in our seats for nine-innings, constantly flash admiring, loving looks at each other and then revel in the magic of the game. When you find a four-year-old boy who does that, let me know, and I’ll help you find a good doctor to check him out.
