4501.Selling a car is not for the weak or impatient
A few weeks ago I wrote about selling things online and how everyone should experience it. It allows for some odd interactions. For example, I was trying to sell some wood flooring that I'd gotten for a project that was clearly never going to happen. My message app was flooded with people wanting to buy it -- a sure sign I had it marked too cheap. One person was upset because I would not give it to him for free.Anyway, I said I'd be back once we sold my daughter's car to share how that went. Let's just say it had a drama all its own.

4505.The light of Christ shines in His art
Several years ago, my wife and I stumbled into a gallery while shopping. It was a gallery unlike any we'd ever seen. If you haven't taken a trip to one of Thomas Kinkade's galleries, it's a must. Every picture hanging on the wall literally glows. For example, neighborhood scenes show light-filled houses that look as if the light inside is real.

4508.Not a typical week at The Nashville Graphic newspaper office!
Everything was moving right along like most typical  Tuesday mornings at the Graphic office this week –– or at least what is typical for us newspaper folks! But what happened mid-morning was even beyond our strange encounters!Nashville Graphic veteran advertising sales representative Deborah Tucker calmly notified all of us that a bird had entered the building through our back door. My first thought was a small bird had flown in since they love to nest in the outside nooks and crannies of some of these old buildings.

It only takes a little appreciation for old houses or history, or maybe just a little travelling to make a person realize the value of public art. Or, maybe, I should say how undervalued public art can be.For example, right here in Nashville we have plenty of examples. The biggest is perhaps the Courthouse on Washington Street.

4567.End of the road for many animals
Hamlett, Frampton and Halo stand side by side, peeking out of their kennels at the Nash County Animal Shelter. The three Labrador puppies don’t know it but their time is limited. With only 16 kennels for dogs, 13 for cats, the shelter has limited space for the hundreds of animals that are picked up or surrendered each month. Last year, the shelter handled 3,081 animals. Over 85 percent of those were euthanized. “Last year, we euthanized 2,661 animals,” said Robert Hunt, Supervisor for Environmental Health. “By far, most of those are dogs and cats.”

4568.Excuses are good to have on hand for all occasions
By the time this column hits your mailbox, Kristi and I will be just days from our daughter's wedding. Many of you read about Holly as she grew up over the last quarter century and we are definitely turning a life page.It turns out we like her fiancée and got that hit man called off just in time. We view this not as losing a daughter but gaining a son. People say this a lot when they obviously don't mean it, but the boy understands barbecue and the 2nd Amendment.

4570.BEULAH COMMUNITY NEWS
I hope all the mothers had a really nice Mother's Day on Sunday. We had a great service at Beulah Church of Christ. The attendance was good and we were so thankful to have a lot of visitors. The sermon was brought to us by our minister Chris Matchem and was on "Mothers are the Best Preachers." Chris and his wife, Bre, also sang a duet, which was beautiful. We were also blessed with a solo by Mary Lee Bass, which was beautiful. God has blessed all them with a special talent and we look forward to hearing from them all again.

4574.Rackley offers "A Layman's View"
There must first be a correction to a church page article in the May 31, 2018 edition of The Nashville Graphic. However involuntary or however accidental, the mistake in need of correction is glaringly obvious and big. The sermon delivered in Acts Chapter Two was delivered by Peter, not Paul! This sermon was also delivered to Jews who were gathered in Jerusalem for one of three annual feasts which required their pilgrimage and attendance according to Jewish law.

4585.Top ten suggestions for improving open government
magine this. As a small business you’ve been granted the approval to make up all the rules as you go, in your favor. All of your customers are required to do business with you, and those who are not in your district can be forced into becoming your customer without any input. And you can charge whatever you want to for your services. And best of all, you’re now granting yourself the approval to work around the proverbial watchdog out there who was making sure you follow your own rules! Sound familiar? Well I’ve just described government.

I don't know if new and improved is always best - but I've always been one of those people who love to hang on the old and the past.Obviously we can't do that with all facets of life. What worked 30 years ago in medicine, education and business don't work so well now. Especially in business due to the ever-so-changing technology we have to keep up with. And aren't we glad we've had advancements in medicine where things today are treatable or manageable - some things even curable.
