The Nash Community College Foundation awarded more than $240,000 in scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year at the Scholarship Awards Program held Thursday, November 1, 2018. The forty-third annual event brings together scholarship recipients and their donors as students are awarded scholarship funds, and have an opportunity to express their gratitude.

4305.Nashville Athletic Youth Day set for July 18
Youth ages five to 18 will have plenty to do next Saturday, as the Brooklyn Area Community Watch presents the fourth annual Nashville Athletic Youth Day. The all-day event, set for Saturday, July 18, will feature many different athletic activities, including 3-on-3 basketball, tag football, relay and track and field events and kick ball. In addition, there will be activities for the younger kids, including an egg on spoon game, bingo and frisbee.

4308.Area mourns the loss of Nash County Commisioner Alford
County Commissioner Jay Alford passed away on Wednesday, September 24, leaving a vacancy on the Board of Commissioners as well as in the hearts of his family, friends, and associates. Alford, who was the youngest commissioner on the current board, was just 46 at the time of his death from heart-related issues. Alford served as a county commissioner for nearly 10 years and was first elected to the board in 1998, representing Nash County’s Fifth District. Since then, he has served his community tirelessly, earning the respect of his colleagues and the appreciation of many of those citizens whom he served.

The extra work required for Nashville’s Downtown Redevelopment Project could wind up costing the town between $9,800 and $68,000. Nashville’s Town Council met last week during a special called meeting to take the necessary action to move forward with the project. One matter of business was to approve a construction contract with Narron Contracting of Middlesex.

4312.Nashville welcomes Church on the Rise
A Rocky Mount church has opened its first extension campus in Nashville. Nashville’s Chamber of Commerce sponsored a ribbon cutting for Church on the Rise Saturday afternoon at the new facility, which is located at 211 W. Washington Street, beside Langley’s Town and Country. Church on the Rise opened in Rocky Mount in 1996. Pastor Richard Gurganus said the church started with just eight people and now has around 1,000 members.

4313.Students, staff and parents pledge to “Change a Light, Change the World”
Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools recently kicked off the 2007 ENERGY STAR “Change a Light, Change the World” program as part of the school system’s continuing efforts to save energy and to protect the environment. Progress Energy donated 200 ENERGY STAR fluorescent bulbs for the campaign kickoff and presented them to Nashville Elementary School principal Beth Lucas along with her students and staff.

Survivors recount a harrowing escape of Wednesday's tornado while emergency management officials continue a massive cleanup effort.Steve Crone, who owns a mobile home park in Dortches with his wife Vicki, said the storm destroyed one trailer and damaged most of the others in the park off North Halifax Road."It destroyed my workshop," Crone said. "One tenant was home with his wife and dog when the tornado flipped their home upside down."

4317.Parents of NRMS kids hold meeting
A group of concerned citizens, many of them parents, met at a Nashville church last week to discuss issues within the Nash-Rocky Mount School System. The meeting was led by Ethan Arrington, a parent of a child who attends Nash Central Middle School. Arrington held the meeting because of concerns he had about the school and the lack of interest the principal, Mark Cockrell, seemed to have with his concerns.

Castalia’s Fourth of July parade will be extra special this year, as it will pay tribute to three local World War II veterans. Anna Joyner, coordinator of this year’s parade, said Sgt. 4322.Accidents claim four over holiday
Accidents over the Labor Day weekend claimed the life of four Nash County residents. On Friday morning, September 1, an accident claimed the life of three family members. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Brandi Rashaw, 22, of Nashville, was driving a 2005 Nissan Sentra that became disabled in the left lane of east bound traffic around 10:46 a.m. The emergency flashers were on, according to reports from the Highway Patrol.

4325.Domestic violence homicide numbers are staggering
Last year in North Carolina, 79 victims of domestic violence died. According to the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence 2006 Summary of homicides, there were 35 child witnesses; 5 children murdered; 10 perpetrators under 25 years of age; 9 murder-suicides and 2 attempted murder-suicides. Out of the 79 people, 21 were males, 58 were females.

4326.Grant funding to improve Barnes Street
The Town of Nashville is looking at ways it can fund its portion of a streetscaping project for Barnes Street. The town has been awarded $675,000 for a Rural Transformation Grant from the NC Department of Commerce's Rural Economic Development Division. The grant funds will be used for streetscaping Barnes Street. The town hired professional grant writer Cara Rogers with Dorner Grant Consultants to write the grant application.

Nash County Commissioners approved the FY2012-2013 last Monday evening, with one change requested by Commissioner Robbie Davis. The $85.4 million budget is a three percent decrease from the current fiscal year budget. The budget included no tax rate increase and no major fee increases were proposed.

JANUARY -The bodies of Leona Johnson and Deborah Scriven are found inside a home at 1247 Compass Creek Drive in Rocky Mount with gunshot wounds. A third victim, Devin S. Criven was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Johnson was a secretary in the Uniforms Operations Division for the City of Rocky Mount Police Department. The incident is still under investigation.

4337.Castalia budget public hearing is June 1st
Castalia will hold a public hearing on June 1 at 6 p.m. at town hall to hear comments on the $212,000 proposed budget for the 2021-2022 Fiscal Year.The budget includes leaving the ad valorem tax rate at .32 per $100 valuation of taxable property.Other line items of the budget include $57,900 for administration costs, $29,150 for operation cost, and a capital outlay of $5,000.

4341.Spring Hope announces new police chief
The Town of Spring Hope announced last week that one of its own will fill the police chief position recently vacated. Nathan D. Gant was named Police Chief and began serving last Wednesday, June 19. Gant has served as a sergeant with the Spring Hope Police Department since 2015. He also served as a member of the Tar River Regional Drug Task Force since its inception.

4342.Nashville man pleads guilty to federal charges
James Edward Whitley pled guilty to charges of wire fraud and money laundering in federal court on Friday, May 13. Whitley, 65, of Greensboro, was indicted in September 2010 on 20 federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering. According to the indictment, Whitley, who is a Nashville native, solicited investors who lived on Bald Head Island, in the Greensboro area and elsewhere from December 2006 to around July 2009.

4343.Nash County Commissioners visit Goldrock
Nash County Commissioners made a special trip to the Gold Rock area on Monday afternoon, following their regularly scheduled board meeting. Commissioners were driven to Gold Rock by Chief Deputy Brandon Medina, of the Nash County Sheriff's Office, and were later joined by Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone. The Gold Rock area has been a topic of conversation among commissioners, who have expressed concern about the amount of crime and the appearance of the area.

4347.Christmas time is here again, thank goodness
I don't know if it is because I got a late start on my early shopping, but it seems like Christmas came in on two wheels this year.As I get older, I like to get my shopping down early and cruise into the Christmas stretch run. It can be challenging navigating crowds if you're not a crowd person.I was never much for crowds, but I sort of peaked that time in the hospital when I tore my gown open in sort of a biblical, shredded loincloth kind of situation. But that's a story for another day.

Nash County fared well in 2018 and Commissioner Chair Robbie Davis has a list of accomplishments to prove it. Davis presented the State of the County address on Monday morning at the board's regular meeting, citing numerous accomplishments for the county in 2018. Among the accomplishments were many internal ones, including the hiring of a new retail economic developer and promoting from within the positions of Director of Social Services and Director of Human Resources.

Nashville's Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the new location of Headliners Hair Salon. The salon moved to 915 Eastern Avenue in Nashville. Headliners has been in business for 19 years. The salon was started by Darlene Floyd and was first located on Nashville Drive before it moved to 625 E. Washington Street, where it was located for around 17 years.

4351.Man sentenced for high-speed chase involving child, puppy
A 29-year-old Rocky Mount man will be serving eight years in federal prison after a high-speed chase in January 2023 where a child and puppy were in the car along with drugs and guns.Chi-Ali Bunn of 5893 Autry Road, Rocky Mount, plead guilty in September 2023 to possession of an unmarked short-barreled rifle and was sentenced this month, according to a news release from the Nash County Sheriff's Office, which was involved in the case along with Wake County and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

While talking about current events recently regarding Israel, Robbie and I recalled a miniseries from twenty years ago. It was called Revelations. The show's title had an "s" on the end of the name as opposed to the last book of the Bible - Revelation. The show questioned whether we were living in the last days. As I write this column, a handful of volunteers are working, some almost around the clock, to finish the last minute details for the 27th Nashville Blooming Festival. Like many events organized by non-profit organizations, volunteers and commitment are hard to come by.This year's event, as it has since 1997, will open with all details finished and that same handful of folks running constantly throughout the event to make sure all goes as planned. The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education held a public hearing on Monday to allow the public to share their thoughts on qualities they'd like to see in the new leader of the school system. The Town of Nashville is looking at new ways to bring in revenues to the town's coffers but is limited due to cuts in revenues by the General AssemblyTown Council met last Thursday for a budget work session with Town Manager Hank Raper, who went over the various revenues the town is projected to receive in the coming fiscal year. As presented, revenues totalled around $5.5 million, compared to the current budget of $4.9 million.

4376.Danforth's Fun Run raises $4,500 for brain cancer
"That is awesome!" Those were the words of eight-year-old Clara Danforth following a successful Fun Run for Cancer, which she organized. Clara's efforts brought in over $4,500, which will go to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The run was held after Clara began praying for two people she knew who are battling brain cancer. Clara said she felt God was calling her to do more and the idea of a run came to mind.

4378.A real look at what law enforcement faces
Sometimes, to really get the feel for an event you are covering, you have to take part in it. At least, that’s what I told myself as I was driving to Southern Police Canine last week. Richard Price had called me last Wednesday to tell me about a training they were doing. The training was called “hard target apprehension.” The course would end on Thursday and the law enforcement officers attending would get to take part in some real life scenarios, scenarios they had spent most of the week training for.

4387.Longtime Spring Hope Commissioner turns over seat
Spring Hope Commissioner Marion Clark sat on the Board of Commissioners for the last time Monday night as she turned her seat over to newcomer Drew Griffin. Clark has served on Spring Hope’s Board of Commissioners since 1999. In 10 years, she has only missed two meetings. That dedication, and her outstanding service to the town, led Mayor Buddy Gwaltney to present Clark with a plaque from both the town and its Board of Commissioners at the start of Monday night’s regular meeting. Within a few minutes of the meeting, Griffin was sworn in and took over as a commissioner for the town.

Nash County's oldest cowboy will serve as Grand Marshal of the 49th Spring Hope Pumpkin Festival Parade Saturday.Demo Tant celebrated his 100th birthday on September 21 with dozens of friends at the Momeyer Ruritan Club. He was later surprised with a parade in front of his home which also included citizens from all around Nash County, law enforcement, Nash County EMS and many of his friends.

4390.Nashville Council looks at changes for B-2 district
Taking recommendations from its Planning Board, Nashville’s Town Council will move forward with looking into several changes for the B-2 Central Business District. During the Planning Board’s meeting last Wednesday, Chair Patsy King asked Planning Director Gene Foxworth about changing the setbacks for the B-2 District. King questioned the change following a rezoning request for a .64 parcel of property next to LaMama’s on Washington Street. The request was to rezone the property from A-1 (Agricultural district) to B-2 (Central Business District). Though the rezoning request was approved by both the Planning Board and Town Council, the developer of the property would have to abide by the setback request if it receives approval.

NASHVILLE - What appeared to be a "grave curb" around an enclosed area outside the Nash Senior Center is now nothing but a pile of rubble, as the site has been cleared for development after initial concerns that there might be a small cemetery there.As reported in the April 2, 2025 edition of The Graphic, "Rezoning request unearths grave concern," the suspected gravesite, big enough for four plots, was initially questioned by local historian and Nashville planning board member Ross Strickland when Nash County applied to rezone the area to accommodate planned Senior Center expansion.

Just seven months after breaking ground for a new facility, Farm Bureau has opened in its new headquarters. A special ribbon cutting and  grand opening celebration was held last Thursday for the new facility, which opened on Eastpoint Avenue, behind the Wendy’s off of Eastern Avenue. The new facility is over 6,700 square feet, over 1,000 square feet larger than the former one.

Fall-like weather is finally here and so are the plethora of events happening here in town and neighboring areas!I've always heard once Labor Day arrives the rest of the year flies by. I believe that to be more accurate each and every year. We've just begun to start enjoying crisp fall mornings but yet the Christmas holiday is rolling towards us at rapid speed. I guess the key is to take time to enjoy all of the happenings rather than rushing to the next season before it arrives.
