It’s been a while since we pulled from our mailbag of the dozens of letters we get each decade and let the readers help write the column. Remarkably, the letters are all questions and are all in regards to the things we were hoping to comment on this week ... in short, concise bursts. If there’s anything that will substitute for good writing, it’s writing.

4211.Luke's Word for the Week
On a daily basis most people are asked very individualistic questions. Some are mundane in nature such as, "Would you like fries and a drink with your order?" or "Would you like your receipt or just put it in the bag?" While others are more intense in nature such as, "How much of your salary would you like to put in savings?" or "Do you take this man to be your husband?" Truly, our world is built on individuals having to make decisions, for themselves, that affect their lives in incredible ways.

4223.Does Jesus really hold the keys to Hades?
"I am he who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death." (Revelation 11:18)This verse answers the question posed in my headline. The Bible clearly records that between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, Jesus went to hell and back for us. Pastors and Sunday School teachers have taught us over the years that Satan and all the evil that goes with him were conquered by Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection from the grave. They base this view in part on what the Apostle Paul said about it in one of his letters to the Church at Ephesus:

Our Congress and Senate has spent trillions of dollars we do not have. Who is going to pay for their spending? All working Americans will pay, not just the rich. Tarp (bank bailouts) was nothing less than the government picking and choosing who fails and who succeeds. We pay. The “Stimulus,” did you know that part of that went to pornography, some to studying mice in California and some to turtle crossings in Florida  and the waste, pork and spending goes on and on. We pay. Auto Industry bailouts, the government decided who fails and who succeeds. We pay.

The thing about boys is that they get hurt -- a lot!I have a four-year-old, two-year-old and four-month-old and they get boo-boo's on a weekly basis. A good week is when the boo-boo's don't require hospitalization, doctor or dentist's visits. In the past four months, we've been to the hospital once and the dentist once. We've also been to the doctor a lot just for general sickness. We actually started this week off with all three boys in the doctor's office. 4231.Wise men went back "another way"
We've all heard the story so much that a few of us could probably quote the verses. So why talk about the wise men when Christmas has come and gone? Even though their visit with the Christ child is traditionally taught as a part of the Christmas Story, Bible scholars believe that these men from the east may not have seen Jesus until two years after his birth. In other words, their visit doesn't have to be associated just with Christmas. While we often concentrate on the gifts these men brought to honor Jesus, we often overlook what else we can learn from their visit.

4273.What does Jesus think about lukewarm churches?
That's a pretty powerful statement, especially considering the fact that Jesus said it. It certainly begs the question: Could Jesus be talking about my church?Actually, the church to which Jesus was referring to was the church at Laodicea. Laodicea was the last of the seven churches described by Jesus in Revelation. The Apostle John, now John the Revelator, was directed by Jesus in Revelation 1:11 to write down what he saw from a vision. He was then to deliver it to seven of the churches which occupied Asia Minor. That area now is modern-day Turkey.
