STANHOPE - When Bunn and Southern Nash tangled earlier in the season, they played as tightly as possible to a tie. It wasn’t nearly as dramatic this time around during last Thursday afternoon’s rematch under windy conditions at the SNSH Soccer Field.

I don’t get a whole lot of time to watch television these days. Don’t get me wrong, that’s not an altogether bad thing. There are a few things I go out of my way to watch or DVD-record (success rate: 48.9%), but with the current fad of so-called reality TV shows, it’s like my Mom says : “It ain’t much fit to watch.” If there was a Golden Age of TV two generations ago, we must be in the Polyester Age now.

It isn’t everyday a national treasure comes to within 30 minutes of your house and invites you over for a visit. Well, maybe “the invite” is stretching it a bit. But last Friday, one of North Carolina’s most famous citizens — Doc Watson — made an appearance at Louisburg College in the school’s auditorium. If that wasn’t enough, he shared the stage with another well-known North Carolinian, David Holt. You can’t get much more bang for a $25 ticket than that.

Maybe you heard someone mention it, but if not, there is a fairly large football game on Sunday. That’s right, the most over-hyped, overdone, over-publicized event – that often is a bust –  is finally here. The Super Bowl. For 96 percent of us, it is just an excuse to get together with friends and have some fun. For 2 percent of us – the actual fans of the teams playing – it is about the game. For 1.5 percent of us, it is just an interruption of a good Sunday afternoon. The other .5 percent is composed of people who have never heard of nachos.

3960.God looks beyond our faults and our Pride
I have to give credit to one of my former pastors for this devotion. Several years ago, he preached a sermon on the prodigal son that inspired me to think about the "other son" in the parable. His slant on the meaning of this parable was both fresh and provoking. Interestingly, a number of the newer Bible translations refer to this parable as the "Parable of the Lost Son" rather than the "Parable of the Prodigal Son".

"So, because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth." (Revelation 3:16)That's a pretty powerful statement, especially considering the fact that Jesus said it. It certainly begs the question: Could Jesus be talking about my church?Actually, the church to which Jesus was referring to was the church at Laodicea. Laodicea was the last of the seven churches described by Jesus in Revelation.
