Descendants of Singleton Langley and members of the community gathered at Sandy Cross United Methodist Church Saturday morning to pay homage to a Civil War soldier who was also one of the founding fathers of the church. Singleton Langley, along with G.D. Langley, Redmond Wells, and Blueford Williams are noted as the founders of Sandy Cross United Methodist Church. Singleton, a Confederate  soldier, is buried in the church cemetery and was honored during a memorial service Saturday morning at which his great-great-great-grandson, Clay Batchelor, unveiled a stone commemorating Langley’s service during the Civil War.

3705.Intersections: God and Life
For this purpose, the Lord will intentionally put adverse conditions in our path so we will choose to believe Him rather than focus on our circumstances--which is what usually gets us in the most trouble. We know from Scripture that David had to remind himself of God's promises and renew his faith in the Lord often because of the adversity he was experiencing.

3708.40 Years of The Graphic hasn't been enough
I was going through yet another container of things from my late parents' house recently. Inside one was a cartoon drawn by a former Nashville Graphic staffer that pictured me losing newspaper-filled mailbags on Boddie Street out of the back of a pickup truck. That death trap and environmental hazard had no tailgate or much of a floorboard. It took a lot of revving in the alley and standing on the clutch at a certain angle to prevent a choke-off, the worst humiliation for a teenage male in the 1980s.

3709.Tim Valentine remembered as a great man, a hero
In a career of photo-journalism, I have photographed political fundraisers where people contributed vast sums of money to walk through receiving lines and shake hands with a notable politician or celebrity. I have also been contracted by lawyers to provide photographic evidence for their defendants. It is with some degree of familiarity that I profess that exactly 99.6% of the time, most lawyer jokes are pretty much well-justified, along with the cynicism expressed about politicians. Lawyers turned politicians fill seats in courthouses, state houses, the Congress, and the White House. Opinions about lawyers earn credibility when the mayor of an Eastern North Carolina, lawyer turned politician, is disbarred.

3710.Nashville gears up for springtime activities
This past weekend, each of us went through the ritual of resetting our clocks for Daylight Saving Time. The process involved springing forward an hour in time, but losing a valuable hour of sleep. Fortunately, we will begin to see an increase in the amount of daylight we experience in Nashville. With the increase in daylight, now is the time of year to highlight activities associated with spring weather. At 9:30am on Monday, March 28, the Town of Nashville Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt at Glover Park.

3714.It’s just a cell phone, right?
The iPhone by Apple is “just” a cellphone, right? I mean, it doesn’t make you smarter, make you more money, attract the ladies/fellows, or come with a person who cleans your house and takes care of your children, right? The reason I ask is that I was at the Apple Store in Durham a couple of weeks ago and there were half a dozen people waiting outside — in the rain — to purchase an Apple iPhone on a Monday morning.

3716.Town focus group sessions have been poorly attended
I was very disappointed in Nashville citizens and business owners last week. Focus groups began on Tuesday night for Nashville’s 20-year Comprehensive Plan. The focus groups gave stakeholders of the Town of Nashville the opportunity to participate in the future of Nashville and discuss what they like and dislike about the town. Three meetings were held last week and at each meeting only three or four people showed up. Those people came out and dedicated an hour of their time towards Nashville’s future. It’s a shame that out of close to 5,000 residents, only a handful can show up to a meeting that gives them the opportunity to take part in Nashville’s future, which inevitably is their future as well.
