On Sunday morning the emphasis of the worship service at Peachtree was the North American Missions and Annie Armstrong Easter Offering.  A short video was viewed showing mission work in Miami, [the birth place of Pastor Whitehouse]. The needs there are enormous and Pastor Whitehouse was acquainted with some of the missionary personnel there. The sermon topic was “Hope for the Hurting” based on scripture from Mark 2:1-11.

3404.Red Oak appoints new commissioner
Red Oak Commissioners appointed a new member to the town council to replace Stanley Moore, who resigned two months ago due to health concerns. Tony Bennett, a long time member of the Red Oak Planning Board, received the appointment in a special extended business meeting that took place on December 18. Bennett was chosen from among four applicants who applied to the town board for consideration for the post. Bennett retired from farming in Red Oak in 2005. He attended Red Oak High School, graduating in 1966 and then attended East Carolina University, receiving his B.S. degree in health and physical education.

3405.Annual 5K race honors fallen deputy
Volunteers are working hard to prepare for the second annual Warren “Sneak” Lewis Memorial Race, which is set for Saturday, September 14. Around 300 runners have already registered for the 5K race, which is being held in Middlesex. The race is in memory of Warren “Sneak” Lewis, III, who was shot and killed while serving a murder warrant with the Eastern North Carolina Fugitive Task Force.

Imagine former President Jimmy Carter teaching your Sunday School lesson each week in a small community church in Plains, Georgia. That's exactly what former President Carter did for nearly 40 years after returning home form the White House.Andrew Greer, nationally known author, recording artist and documentary filmmaker, was led to Plains, GA, the well-known hometown of former Carter. Andrew literally became a part of the community as he directed a PBS documentary, "Plainspoken," a film spotlighting Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter's work to bridge racial divisions in their hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Early voting began last week and so far, voters aren’t coming out, said Nash County Board of Elections Director John Kearney. “I got workers,” Kearney said. “The voters are just not coming.” As of Monday afternoon, 538 residents had cast their vote at the Nashville early voting site and only 94 had cast a vote in Rocky Mount.

There's a lot of rumors about the happenings on the big 'ole empty lot across from McDonalds. Rumors are flying about all the businesses that are supposedly going there. The one I've heard most is a Sheetz gas station. So far, I have been unable to confirm that, or any of the other rumors, but it sure has been an exciting topic of conversation. If I was in charge of that development, I know what I'd like to see over there!

Recently, fourth grade AIG students at Middlesex Elementary School explored the use of geometric properties and relationships by constructing geodesic domes. In order to construct the domes, students spent time exploring architectural history, manipulating triangular relationships and measuring precisely.

Students are suffering, parents are struggling and science says it's time for kids to go back to school.Those words were echoed on Saturday, February 6 during a rally held outside the Nash County Public Schools Central Office Building.The rally, "Let The Kids Learn in Person," was attended by over 30 parents, students and other members of the community, who voiced concerns over what remote learning was doing to the students in the school system.

3422.Tri-County commissioners meet
Nash County Commissioners hosted a breakfast for fellow commissioners from Wilson and Edgecombe Counties on Tuesday in Sharpsburg. The breakfast was a chance for commissioners to fellowship and open the lines of communication between the three boards, said Nash County Board Chair Robbie Davis. Though there was no agenda, Davis did offer some trivia from each of the three counties, including who each county was named after and each counties size as well as how many square miles of water each county has.

3424.Running Festival is a hit!
Saturday's 2nd Annual Nashville NC Running Festival drew more participants than last year and was successful in raising $10,000 for Special Olympics.Race Director Travis Hedgepeth said his goal for participation was 300 runners, and that 375 runners finished one of five races offered.First out of the gate at 7:15 a.m. were 20 runners in the Boston Marathon Qualifier, running a full marathon distance of 26.2 miles. Winners were Chuck Engle from Fort Mill, SC, in the Men's Division, and Morgan Courtney of Rocky Mount in the Women's Division.

A Nashville girl is using some of her time at home to make face masks for local nurses. Teagan Horst, 10, was recently lead to make masks after hearing a neighbor talk about how masks and other supplies were limited for healthcare workers. "Teagan was too afraid to ask her herself so she asked me if that was something she could do," Teagan's mom, Maranda Horst, said. "She is very efficient with the sewing machine."

3431.West Mount Ruritan Club celebrates 60 years of service
The West Mount Ruritan Club celebrated 60 years of service to the community last week at a special anniversary celebration. Wayne Outlaw, the club's Vice President, began the celebration with a history of the club. The club was chartered on November 14, 1955 and was sponsored by the Coopers Ruritan Club. Twenty-five men signed the original charter, which continues to hang in the clubhouse. The last active charter member, Aaron Joyner, passed away in June 2015.

3432.Etheridge to hold office hours in Nashville
Congressman Bob Etheridge will be in Nashville on Thursday, August 27 from 2 until 4 p.m. to meet with citizens who need help with a variety of issues. The Nash County Democratic party had sent out emails stating the Congressman would be here for a health care discussion. However, a spokesman for Etheridge said the Congressman would not be holding a forum on health care. Instead, he would be at the Claude Mayo Administrative Building to discuss a variety of issues.

An altercation at a party Saturday morning has left one man dead and another charged with first degree murder. According to Lt. Todd Wells, of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to 3030 Como Road, Rocky Mount, around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 29 in reference to a subject shot. When deputies arrived, they found 31-year-old Tony Pittman, Jr. in the back yard of the home deceased.

The biggest holiday of the summer, and for most folks, the marking of the middle of summer as we think of it, is upon us. July 4th — truly a holiday that all Americans can embrace, is this weekend. No one can really be offended by a religious context to the holiday, although we should certainly feel comfortable to thank God for this country; no one can attribute the day to the oppression of anyone else, although at times, it seems the current administration is still seeing to “fundamentally change” this nation; and while America may not be perfect, it’s about as close as anyone has been able to come up with, as far as country’s go.

NASHVILLE- A Nashville father is in jail, the suspect of a shooting incident that left his son is in critical condition.Darrell Greg Wallace, age 63, of 416 Woodfield Drive, Nashville, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. His son, 34-year-old Brandon Michael Wallace, is in the intensive care unit of Wake Med, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

3445.Former Nashville council member passes away
Nashville's first female council member, Rebecca "Becky" Jones Bass, passed away Friday, July 29 at the age of 83.Bass served the town from 1975 to 1987. She was honored by the Town of Nashville in 2018 for her service not only as the first woman elected to the board but also a part of the transition of the board from a Commissioner to a Council-Manager form of government in 1978.

Would you like to help save some pets?  There are other ways, besides adoption.  For example, NCAF could use some help at the Shelter during the weekday!  We need photographers and pet handlers who assist the photographer.  Pet handlers also act as adoption assistants when someone visits, since they will know a lot about the pets.  Currently there are two shifts.  10-noon and 1-4pm.  Call me for details on how to join the NCAF Shelter Pet Crew.

3455.Trail Life, Heritage Girls participate in Patriots Point camping program
American Heritage Girls and Trial Life USA Troop NC-0834 recently walked in the steps of the country's heroes while participating in the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum's camping program aboard the historic World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown on Charleston Harbor.During the trip, the group became "shipmates" while touring the museum's three 70 year old warships: the USS Yorktown, World War II destroyer USS Laffey, and Cold War submarine USS Clamagore.

First Street in Nashville representing local heroes.The Heroes Field of Honor® ran from September 8 through Sunday, September 11. 3458.Plane crashes in Red Oak
NC Highway Patrol officers responded to an unusual traffic situation in Red Oak on Thursday, June 23, when Ted Shanks placed an emergency call for aid at a plane crash site near the intersection of Hwy. 43 and Red Oak Road in Red Oak. Ted’s father, Von Roger Shanks, 82, had taken his small passenger plane up using the air strip that was located on his property on Red Oak Blvd. in Red Oak. However, the engine apparently stalled, sending the plane crashing into the trees.

3461.Longtime 9-1-1 supervisor retires
A longtime employee of Nash County's Emergency Communications Center is celebrating retirement. Cindy Wells officially retired on December 31, after over 30 years with Nash County. Wells started her career in 1982 as a dispatcher with the Nash County Sheriff's Office. Wells said Frank Brown was the sheriff at the time. When things transitioned to include more than just the sheriff's offices calls, Wells transitioned with it.

Former Nashville Town Council member Louise Hinton faces a January court date to answer misdemeanor charges regarding violating privacy of employee personnel records, specifically those of former Police Chief J.T. Winstead. She was a member of the council at the time of the alleged actions.Nash County court records state that Hinton's alleged offense occurred at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 26, the night before Winstead and Human Resource Director Matt Joyner received "non-disciplinary" suspensions while an internal investigation was in process.

3482.Larceny spirals into bomb scare at CVS
A reported shoplifting at Nashville’s CVS Pharmacy turned into quite a scare Monday as the suspect claimed to have explosives in a travel bag. Nashville Police Chief Thomas Bashore released a statement after the incident reporting that the suspect, Walter S. Wright, 37, of Reading, Pennsylvania, had allegedly shoplifted allergy medicine from CVS Pharmacy at 101 W. Washington Street in downtown Nashville.

The Nashville community is mourning the loss of Ralph Batchelor, who passed away on Sunday, January 19 at the age of 62.Batchelor was a well known farmer in the Sandy Cross area who farmed sweet potatoes and tobacco.  Charlie Tyson said Batchelor and his wife, Sylvia, were in business with the propagation of sweet potato plants.
