205.As we head into summer, generation spreads
As we dive into the dog days of summer, I was glad we had some timely rains over the weekend.I used to shake my head in my younger days when I'd hear "old timers" say that.Gardens are hopefully producing a little for all the work put in during what seemed like a long and mild spring. The local farmer's markets are rolling as best they can in a pandemic, and I'm sorely missing strawberry season.

LIFE, may have been TIME, once devoted a page or two in each issue to Milestones. Dying, having a birthday, or getting married were the most commonly reported milestones.Getting a driver's license is a milestone. Back in the day, 99 percent of pre-puberty males in Pamlico County knew how to drive a car long before they enrolled in driver's ed. I learned how not to ride the clutch on Burton Farm Road. It was a dirt road then, under the radar of the highway patrol. Boddie-Noel purchased the land and the farm is now Arlington Place. Upscale homes and cottages have replaced tobacco barns.

Saturday, I was out taking care of the goats and chickens. With the extremely hot summer we’ve got going – and we haven’t even reach August yet º plenty of fresh water, hay and cool places to hang out are essential. While I was working with the domestic animals, I also turned out the wild animals – namely, Holly (11), Kent (6) and Lowell (4). Left to their own devices, these three can be far more dangerous, but just as fun to observe.

237.Yesteryear's summers were certainly the best ever!
Summertime is creeping in slowly this year with longer lasting spring-like temperatures. This year's slow climb towards warmer days reminds me of my youthful days in the early 70s playing outdoors all day - even after dark until Mama would give the last call to come indoors for the night. Long summer nights were always filled with lots to do even though we really had nothing to do.I recall my nephew and I calling the local radio stations, WRMT or WEED, requesting a special song then running outdoors to sit in one of the cars to listen to the radio. It didn't matter if we had to wait for hours to hear the song we asked for!
