It may be taking a while for spring to arrive –– even though it’s long past the time marked on the calendar –– but I’m sure once it arrives, it won’t be long before the typical southern heat and humidity will be causing us to complain about as much as we did over winter weather.Summertime brings lots of fond memories, especially those of mini-vacations I spent with my sisters while growing up.

When the second World War ended in 1945, four Japanese soldiers who had been left on the Filipino island of Lubang refused to believe that the war was over. Stay-at-home moms don't have time to do such trivial things like read the newspaper or sit still or breathe. The current result from the House Judiciary II Committee causes one to question what has happened to so many of our elected representatives. Why have so many of our legislators lost their belief and faith in the citizens of North Carolina? Is it because in their professional lives they are routinely dealing with individuals that are always lying and scheming to “one up” the system? Have they dealt with the adverse lying/scheming side of mankind for so long that their view of the average citizens has become so jaded that they attribute that jaded view to all individuals.

Heat kills dogs. If you have an outside dog, not only is it the law, it is humane to have shade. If you have a kennel, make sure that the entire top is covered by a tarp at least. A dog house doesn't give enough shade and actually can become very hot inside. When I kenneled dogs in the summer, not only did I cover the top, I had tarps on the side that the sun hit the most. Also make sure there is plenty of water and a fan doesn't hurt either.

2471.Attempting to interpret the new normal
Several months ago I was searching through the archives here at The Graphic trying to find some information for Lee Coppedge at Nashville Fire Department. While doing so, I began reading copies of some personal letters and newspaper clippings written by the founder of  The Graphic, Maurice W. Lincke. The copies were sent  to us by his granddaughter Chris Johnson.

2473.Will our new First Lady follow tradition or stay in the background?
New First Lady Melania Trump looks to be a different sort of First Lady. For starters, she's not moving into the White House, at least not initially. The President will move in, that's what is most important, but his wife plans to stay at Trump Tower and be about the business of raising son, Barron, all of ten years of age. Will the First Lady take up residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue next fall when her son's new school year begins?

2474.You don’t know what you got until –– it breaks
First came the wobble. Then the thunder. Then there was a drainage problem. This wasn’t about a trip out for Indian food. It was much more ominous. It is amazing the truths about life you can find in metal/hair band lyrics from the 1980s. For example, one local columnist may or may not have once owned a CD produced by Cinderella that included the hit, “You Don’t Know What You Got Till It’s Gone.”

2475.House budget cuts NRMS staff by 130
The North Carolina House of Representatives plans to pass a budget today that reduces the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (NRMS) workforce, cutting $4 million — $485,000 more than Governor Bev Perdue’s proposed budget. Although this would mean a loss of only 21 NRMS special program teacher positions, 109 other instructional support and staff would be cut.

2480.July 4th is just one of 365 days to celebrate
I attended a fireworks show this week where the person in charge briefly set himself on fire, so it must be July 4th week. This is the number one week in redneck enclaves for beverages to be passed and someone to say "Watch this!" and then end up on the TV news and/or the front page of the paper.Part of what makes America great is that a person can commit as many dumb acts as they can dream up, generally without government interference.

A virgin named Mary was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel Gabriel announced,"And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." (Luke 1:31-33)Have you ever received a birth announcement? They all have one thing in common. Birth announcements are sent out after the child is born.

2486.My son's TV reality show is sure to be a hit
After years of making fun of the people who make, star in and watch Reality TV Shows — which are not very real — I have decided to change my stance. That is because I have seen how Reality TV can benefit me. Therefore, it is okay for me to make what others might call a "hypocritical" decision. Politicians and pro athletes do it every week.

The following is my devotion from "early. A morning gathering for finding deep peace." It appeared on Facebook Live on December 13, 2021.I've had a diverse employment history.I've worked in a chicken house, on a farm, walked aimlessly through cotton fields looking for insects and disease. I've waited tables. I've shoveled horse manure. I've washed dishes. I worked "hardlines" at Target.

2495.Decorating, un-decorating not the best part
It is a time that tries men’s souls. It is stressful, tiresome and full of conflict. “It” is the annual ritual of decorating for Christmas, and is only eclipsed in man-horror by shopping, musicals and un-decorating for Christmas.

2500.NFD completes Project Lifesaver recertification
NASHVILLE - It looked like a cross between an Easter Egg Hunt and Hide and Seek: but instead of children, the "hunters" were Nashville firefighters, using radio frequency receivers to hone in on what Chris Jenkins, Deputy Fire Marshal, had hidden in, on, or under equipment stored behind the Nashville Fire Department. Unlike Easter Eggs, the small transmitters were not brightly-colored, or edible, but were designed to carry a real life "prize": finding one could be a difference between life and death.
