1905.Hoping high speed internet will one day be an option for us country folk
Well, I still live in the boonies, which means I still use a tin can and string to communicate with people. It also means I have to get my own pizza. And, of course, under no circumstances, it seems, will I ever be able to have high speed internet. It's amazing to me that with the technology we have in this world, high speed internet is still not an option for some folks. (And neither is pizza delivery, for that matter!)

1909.Intersections: God and Life
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. - 1 Thessalonians 5:18Hello brothers and sisters. We live in a world that constantly tells us we need more. More possessions, more experiences, a bigger house, a faster car. We are conditioned to focus on what we lack rather than what we have. This mindset, rooted in an ungrateful heart, quickly leads to bitterness, envy, and dissatisfaction. It clouds our vision and prevents us from appreciating the abundance of God's blessings that surround us daily.

1910.Thanksgiving not about food? Speak for yourself
It is without a doubt, my favorite time on the calendar.Even though the spring weather and the fact I still have blooming roses a few days before December 1 betrays the season a bit, another year has almost passed.I love all holidays, but Thanksgiving has been my favorite most of my adult life. Most of us talk about how thankful we are and should be.I ran across a social media post I made a few years ago because I'd heard and read so many times that Thanksgiving isn't about the food. I replied then and I'll repeat it here -- speak for yourself, brother.

1913.Anger often makes us act like children
The Bible teaches us that sin separates us from God. But you know what? It wasn't until a few years ago that I realized that sin as far back as my own childhood robbed me of the opportunity to know the fullness of God.When I was seven, I broke a vase on the hearth of our fireplace. I knew that my mother was going to wear me out when she found out about it. As a matter of background, trouble had its way of finding me, and I was no stranger to getting "taken to the woodshed" at my house. At least that's the way it seemed to me.

A lot of people consider Memorial Day Weekend to be the start of summer, it is not this year. 1916.Protest proposed annexation
Dear Editor, The people in our community are against forced annexation. They made a choice to build or buy a home in a rural area. Many families lost their homes and personal property in the 1999 flood and these families had to start all over. I have met some of these families, most of them are senior citizens, they live in our community. They did not build or buy a house in the City of Rocky Mount because of the taxes, utilities and stormwater charges. We live out in the country. God blesses us with rain water.

1965.Music loses another King and other observations
Though many body parts seem to be breaking down the old adage, "The mind is the first thing to go," seems to hold true.Last week I penned a piece of deathless prose about the legendary musical contributions of Ben E. King.Later in the week, the legendary blues singer BB King died. You guessed it. I go into "The sky is falling mode." Did I get it wrong? Was The Graphic getting letters to the editor wondering about my sanity? Was it BB King or Ben E. King that died?

1975.AVENTON COMMUNITY NEWS
No Aventon News this week, just thoughts.Things sure are different today than they were 40 years ago. When I married my late husband Ben, I was from that moment on a "kept woman"; he was from the old school, that was the way it was supposed to be. I had the babies, stayed at home and raised them, kept the house, cooked for the family; I was a mama and wife everyday...all day and all night long. I washed his clothes, ironed them and laid them out every morning...well, at least most mornings.

1976.My dad taught me some of life’s most valuable lessons
You’re never too old for your daddy. That’s probably the main lesson I’ve learned since I became an adult. But this is perhaps the first time I’ve actually admitted it. So Happy Father’s Day dad. You were right. I was wrong. When I was younger, I thought growing up would be so cool. I’d be on my own and have my own money, my own house, my own car, my own life. I wouldn’t have to ask permission to do anything.

1984.Change of season, change of times
It was a fall afternoon probably twenty years ago when my daughter and I pulled a small sapling out of the pine straw we'd spread around the house. "Why don't we plant this baby tree and see if it will grow?" I said.As a preschooler, Holly was excited about most things. I dug a hole and then held the little sweet gum in place while she carefully packed the dirt around the base. Over the next week, we watered the little tree regularly. I told Holly that if we kept jumping over it every day, we'd always be able to jump over it.

SPRING HOPE - Despite efforts to document the pre-1979 existence of the 'the old Boy Scout Hut' on McLean Street, needed in order to fix the place up, no such historical evidence has found, leaving town officials a final option of just asking the state for approval.Dicky Bass, American Legion Post 91 commander, started the ball rolling in January when he rounded up the manpower to renovate the structure, asking town commissioners permission to do so in order to give the Legion a place to hold meetings, as well as to entice the return of a Boy Scout troop.
