RED OAK -- Each of Northern Nash's three victories over Nash Central in girls soccer action were nail-biters this season -- but each ended with the same result.Northern continued its mastery over its backyard rival on Monday during first-round action of the Big East Conference Tournament at the NNHS Soccer Complex in Red Oak.Again, the festivities went down to the wire as the Lady Knights were able to squeeze out a 2-1 triumph in overtime.

1013.Nashville Elementary recognizes students for physical fitness
Nashville Elementary topped out with the President’s Physical Fitness test this year with 125 students winning awards. The top honor of President’s Award went to six winners and 119 earned recognition as National Fitness winners. The President’s Physical Fitness test is given yearly to grades 3-5 after pre-test and weekly practice of each of the five areas of the test. The test consists of v-sit reach to test flexibility, pull-ups and flexed arm hang for upper arm strength, sit-ups for abdominal strength, shuttle run for agility, and the 1/2 - 1 mile run for endurance. Students are rewarded for their effort by being awarded the shirt of their prospective area and a certificate signed by President Obama.

1024.Spring Hope bumps tax rate 3 cents
Spring Hope commissioners continued to debate a tax increase Monday night in order to balance the 2015-2016 budget. The final result was a 3-1 vote to implement a 3 cent increase which brings the general fund budget to $1,063,597 and the town's tax rate to 63 cents per $100 valuation.Spring Hope's tax rate of 76 cents in 2002 had been reduced to 57 cents until a tax increase was necessary last year. Last year, Spring Hope's board initially rejected a tax increase recommended by Town Manager John Holpe but later found it necessary to add 3 cents to its tax rate.

Tarboro High School senior Brenna Bryant was crowned Miss Jabberwock 2017 during the recent 39th Jabberwock pageant presented by the Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Delta Center for Life Development. During the 39th Jabberwock pageant, 25 young women were presented to society. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The 20th annual Carolinas Classic All-Star Basketball Games, sponsored by the North Carolina Coaches Association and the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association, were played March 18 in Myrtle Beach. 1067.Castalia hears concerns over privacy at park
Most of Castalia's town board meeting last Tuesday was dedicated to hearing requests from the public. Rev. Carlyle Hall and several deacons from Castalia Baptist Church had questions and concerns about the park. The group wanted to know if there are plans for a privacy fence to be constructed along the side of the park that faces the parsonage property. Mayor Ellene Leonard explained, "There will be a buffer, it will not be a fence." Later she continued, "Our town ordinance calls for a live buffer. We did make some arrangements to have that ordinance changed, but it has never been completed."

NASH COUNTY -- Southern Nash was not only the last high school football team standing in Nash County, but it also collected a lion’s share of Big East Conference honors as the league’s All-Conference teams were announced last week. The league’s coaches voted on the first and second all-offensive teams, first and second all-defensive teams, first and second-team specialists and each squad was allowed an honorable mention selection. Also, player of the year honors were doled out on offense and defense and the coach of the year was voted on.

WILSON -- Each of Nash County’s public high schools will take part in the annual Brittany For The Boys Soccer Showcase. The event will be held Aug. 21-22 at the J. Burt Gillette Athletic Complex in Wilson. Northern Nash will be in action Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. against Hickory. One day later, Southern Nash will tangle with Currituck (2 p.m.), Rocky Mount will meet East Wake (9:30 a.m.) and Nash Central will take on East Cuplin (11:45 a.m.). Tickets will be available at the gate, with all proceeds going to the Brittany Willis Scholarship Fund.
