904.Local man files for NC House seat
A Rocky Mount man has filed to run on the Democratic ticket for the District 25 House seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Jim Lee filed for the seat on December 21, the final day of filing for the March 15 partisan primary. Lee faces no opponents for the Democratic ticket but will face incumbent Republican Jeff Collins in the General Elections in November. Lee has lived in Rocky Mount since 2002. He has been a middle school teacher since 2005 and an adjunct instructor at Nash Community College since 2004.

909.Howard, Hall saluted at SNHS
STANHOPE -- Alyse Hall and Stacey Howard took home top honors at last Monday at Southern Nash High School Athletic Awards Ceremony at the SNHS Gymnasium. Hall, who will continue her basketball career at Campbell University, was saluted as SN’s Female Athlete of the Year. She also participated in tennis for the Ladybirds. Stacey Howard, a standout in football, basketball and track and field, was tabbed as the school’s Male Athlete of the Year. Howard will play football next year at Chowan University.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Host Roanoke Valley claimed a tri-match victory against Birchwood and Benvenue during Nash-Halifax Swim League action last Thursday. 914.Spring Hope considers sidewalks in town
The Spring Hope Board of Commissioners are considering adding sidewalks to high traffic areas within town.The Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program, or CMAQ, would make it possible for the sidewalks to be built. CMAQ is a program that is through the Federal Highway Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation which funds transportation projects.

Honor chair is dedicated for fallen deputy

Visitors to the lobby of the Nash County Sheriff's Office can stand at a window for assistance or sit while waiting or for filling out forms; one chair, however, is not for sitting in. Its blue and black cord threaded through its beautifully varnished wooden arms mark it as having a special purpose.It is an Honor Chair for fallen Deputy Jared Allison, a former U.S. Army Infantryman whose watch of three years ended in December of 2020, less than a week after he was critically injured in the pursuit of a speeding motorcyclist at the intersection of NC 301 and Old Mill Road.

Representative Bobbie Richardson urged fellow Democrats to get fired up and help support Democratic candidates in the coming elections so they could win back North Carolina. Richardson, who represents District Seven in the General Assembly, spoke at the Nash County Democrat rally last Thursday evening. She told those in attendance that Democrats needed to work hard to win back more seats in 2014. Democrats also had another goal in mind for 2016, Richardson said.

RED OAK -- Practice hasn't necessarily made perfect for the Northern Nash Knights in the early portion of the 2015 baseball campaign. Like every other prep team in the area, Northern hasn't had much preseason work due to poor weather. So the Knights have gotten off to a 1-2 start under second-year skipper Leonard Allen -- though Northern was able to secure a victory over Corinth Holders by a 10-0 tally last Tuesday in Northern's opener.

COVID-19 may have canceled the annual Teacher of the Year Celebration for Nash-Rocky Mount Schools but the school system still found a way to honor educators.This year, district leaders were able to coordinate a YouTube premiere video that announced the top educators for the 2020-2021 school year.Typically, the school system hosts a special event at Rose Hill Conference Center to honor educators. However, the normal celebration over a meal and awards ceremony had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions on mass gatherings.

The Ladies Retreat, which was at Beulah on Saturday, was a really great event. We had a great attendance and the women had a great program brought to them by Linda Joyner, a professor at Roanoke Bible College. The topic was “Crowns + Coffee = Missions.” It helped us realize just how important missionaries are and why it is so important to get God’s word to all the world.

992.Friends group to promote adoption, spay and neutering
A Spring Hope woman has accepted the challenge and started a group aimed at saving animals that come through Nash County’s Animal Shelter. Carol Vierela formed the Nash County Animal Shelter Friends, or NCASF, group after a July 28 editorial in The Nashville Graphic by Publisher Jo Anne Cooper challenged someone in the community to step up and form such a group that could work with the shelter to help adopt out animals and have them spayed and/or neutered.

We had a great week-end at Beulah Church of Christ. We had beautiful weather and good fellowship. On Saturday we had cleanup day in the yard at the church. The men cut back shrubbery and cleaned the grounds. Some of the women cleaned up inside the fellowship hall, which included window washing, rearranging inside cabinets, etc. The men also worked outside the fellowship hall. Thank everyone who came and helped. It looks really good.

1000.McCrory visits Nash
Governor Pat McCrory dropped in for a whirlwind tour of Rocky Mount last Thursday, February 12, focusing on visiting reclaimed historic sites and promoting the revival of historic tax credits for the state. He ended the tour with a press conference at the Imperial Center where he touted his plan for a new round of historic tax credits and hinted that new jobs may be coming to the area.
