Rocky Mount man charged in infant's death

The father of a two-month old has been arrested and charged with the baby's death.
Rocky Mount Police were called to 444 Sled Court around 6 a.m. on Sunday, August 12. When officers arrived on scene, they found a two-month-old infant unresponsive. The infant was pronounced dead on the scene and was transported to the medical examiner's officer for an autopsy.

New faces file for school board

Wendy Wilson, Brenda Brown and Wayne Doll are not seeking re-election to the Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education.
Filing ended for the five available Board of Education seats on Friday, August 3.
Wilson has served District 2 since 2014. Two have filed to run for the seat. Monica Hathaway, of Elm City, and Dean Edwards, of Bailey, both filed for the District 2 seat on Thursday and Friday of last week.

FAMILY FUN DAY!

The skies were clear on Saturday after a week of rain, making for a perfect first Family Fun Day in the Park, which was held Saturday at Castalia's Community Park.
Castalia churches hosted the event, which featured entertainment, food, vendors and a bookbag giveaway for youth.
Rev. Victor Fenner, pastor of Castalia Missionary Baptist Church, said up to 250 people came out on Saturday. Over 100 bookbags were given away to area school-aged youth.

Nashville okays rezoning for auto parts store

Nashville's Town Council approved two rezoning requests that will pave the way for a national auto parts store to build on East Washington Street.
The Hutton Team, LLC, out of Chattanooga, TN, requested property at 626 E Washington Street and a portion of 203 Aviation Avenue be rezoned from R-10 (residential) and R-4 (high density residential) to B-1 (General Business).

Town Hall meetings set for school consolidation

The Nash-Rocky Mount School System has set tentative dates for town hall forums on the new proposed elementary school.
The Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools Board of Education, along with the Nash County Board of Commissioners, are looking at consolidating Cedar Grove Elementary School, Swift Creek Elementary School and Red Oak Elementary School into one, newly built school.

Nashville's Town Council was presented with new Christmas decorations on Tuesday night.
Amy Beasley, who is a member of a committee appointed by Municipal Service District (MSD) Committee Chair Dylan Bunch, showed council members a sample of a decoration on Tuesday and said she wanted the board to see what the committee had been working on.

Spring Hope will be getting a DMV Tag Agency Office/DMV License Plate Agency.
A new DMV Tag Agency Office will be on its way to Spring Hope.
President of the Spring Hope Chamber of Commerce Jan Mills said the town has been approved and selected to receive the office.

Nash County denies rezoning request

Nash County Commissioners denied a rezoning request on Jordan Road after neighboring residents expressed their opposition.
The request came before Commissioners on Monday at the board's regular meeting.
The request was made by the property owners Doris Jordan Worthington and Oliver Wendell Worthington, who live in Statesville, and by Cecil Williams, Jr., the prospective purchaser and developer.

The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education approved new administrators on Monday during their regular meeting.
The new administrative assignments are effective for the 2018-2019 school year.
Craig Tedford was named the principal at Spring Hope Elementary.

Red Oak youth benefit from annual reading camp

Ten Red Oak youth recently spent three weeks brushing up on their reading skills while attending the fourth annual Fruit of the Spirit Summer Reading Camp.
The three-week camp includes youth from Red Oak and Swift Creek Elementary Schools and is for grades K-3.
Red Oak United Methodist Church has been hosting the camp for four years now.

Rocky Mount PD makes arrest in homicide case

The Rocky Mount Police Department have made an arrest in one of two homicides that occurred last weekend.
Officers responded to an aggravated assault call in the 4300 block of Carrol Avenue on Sunday, July 29. Upon responding, officers found 32-year-old Cerron Fox, of Rocky Mount, who had been stabbed. Fox was taken to Vidant in Greenville, where he died from his injuries.

School Prayer Walks set for Nash County

Area youth pastors are hoping to cover local schools in prayer before school starts.
The Youth Pastors Coalition is hosting its annual "School Prayer Walks" for Nash County public and private schools August 19, 20, 21 and 22.
Pam Bailey, who serves as the Director of the Youth Pastor's Coalition, said the event has been held for several years now.

Counting the days to back to school!

While everyone else seems to be dreading the start of school, I admit, I'm a bit excited.
In fact, I'm counting down the days, the hours, the minutes.
I've enjoyed the summer time with my boys, don't get me wrong. But, I'll be glad to get back to more of a routine, even if it is a crazy one.
