Rocky Mount City Council updated on event center

Rocky Mount Event Center Consultant Charles Penny and John McDonald, vice president and account executive for Sports Facilities Management, updated the Rocky Mount City Council on the progress happening at the center.
The update, provided during the council's Committee of the Whole meeting held Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, noted that the center's final completion date will be Oct. 22, 2018.

"Seven Bridges Road"

Marilynn Barner Anselmi has never been one to shy away from writing about difficult topics.
Her most recent writing, "Seven Bridges Road," is fiction but is inspired by the real-life murders of local women and the social injustices Anselmi said followed the murders.
Anselmi's story will come to life soon at Nash Arts in a performance of "Seven Bridges Road, which is directed by Greg Spence and Dionne Luckett Spence.

Some kids headed back to school a week ago, some this week and some will go next week. Teachers and administrators have been back for some time.
It's no different at my house.

It's hard to believe how fast my three little boys are growing!
School starts for two of my boys next week. I'll have a second grader and a kindergartner! My youngest will start after Labor Day and he'll be in a three-year-old preschool class.
Devin is my little guy that will be in kindergarten.

Reflections on our Anthem

Dear Editor: We often become inattentive or intellectually lame when performing the same tasks and rituals frequently. Sadly, I found that true with myself when Pledging Allegiance to the Flag or standing for the National Anthem, just going through the motions. Not anymore. Thanks to the NFL, the players kneeling for the Anthem have given me cause for reflection and subsequently a renewed appreciation and understanding of America and why we honor it by standing.

Dear Editor: The North Carolina Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans wishes to express our disgust and outrage regarding the celebration of anarchy that the world witnessed in Chapel Hill this evening.
Despite our warnings to the UNC administration and requests for police protection of state property, an unruly gang of activists took the law into its own hands.

Woman, child electrocuted at Gold Rock hotel

A faulty air conditioner at a Gold Rock hotel electrocuted a woman and her child on Monday morning, killing them both.
The Rocky Mount Fire Department responded to the call Monday morning regarding two females who were possibly electrocuted at the Economy Inn and Suites in Gold Rock.
Four people were reportedly living in the hotel room and three of the four were in the room at the time of the incident.

NCSO highway team intercepts drug traffickers

The Nash County Sheriff's Office Highway Interdiction Team has been busy the past few months, intercepting drug traffickers that travel into and through Nash County on a daily basis.
Last week, members of the team arrested two out-of-state men on I-95 after discovering cocaine in their vehicle.

Finch graduates Command College
Finch graduates Command College

The Nash County Sheriff's Office recently celebrated the accomplishments of one of their own.
Lieutenant Greg Finch graduated from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Command College. Finch was one of 16 participants in the program.
The Command College was created in 2016 in response to an internal evaluation which identified the need to develop additional professional training for command and executive level personnel at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Library wraps up Summer Reading

Patrons at Nashville's H.D. Cooley Library read over 1,000 hours this summer.
The library's summer reading program wrapped up last month with its final event on July 28. The finale included bounce houses, crafts, food and a marionette puppet show.

As I sit here surrounded by four dogs and two cats, I realize how lonely I would be without them. As they are getting older, I think about how short their lives are, but how they love unconditionally. All they want to do is to please their person. While getting the photos for posting, I couldn't help but notice, that even though they are in the Shelter, they look for approval from the handler. You can literally see their soul in their eyes. Don't let their light go out too soon, adopt!!!
