Local graduates Highway Patrol

The State Highway Patrol proudly welcomed 14 new troopers at a graduation ceremony for the 146th Basic Highway Patrol School. The ceremony ended 15 weeks of demanding training preparing them for a fulfilling career of service to the state of North Carolina.
The ceremony was held at the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Auditorium in Raleigh.

Governor Roy Cooper recently announced 49 appointments to various state boards and commissions for North Carolina.
"I'm grateful for the dedication each appointee brings to North Carolina," said Governor Cooper. "Their knowledge and devotion will rightfully serve these various boards and commissions."

New look for Nash County Travel and Toursim recently unveiled

Nash County Travel and Tourism has unveiled a new look, website and office location, all intended to showcase the extensive resources offered in Nash County. The public was introduced to the new look at a recent ribbon cutting ceremony at their new headquarters in Rocky Mount Mills at 1104 Falls Road.
In an effort to be more inclusive of the robust offerings throughout the area, the organization is expanding its brand.

Sharpe receives Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal award

Helen Sharpe was recently honored at the United Daughters of the Confederacy State Convention in Durham receiving the Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal for her devotion and work in researching and preserving the history of Confederate Soldiers, especially African American Confederate Soldiers and their service during the War Between the States.

The Nash Community College Foundation awarded more than $240,000 in scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year at the Scholarship Awards Program held Thursday, November 1, 2018. The forty-third annual event brings together scholarship recipients and their donors as students are awarded scholarship funds, and have an opportunity to express their gratitude.

What? How can you say that? Easy, if you cannot afford to take care of the rescued pet or become a hoarder of rescued pets. Just recently, it was reported in NJ that a lady had approx. 150 "rescued dogs" at her home. There were a few that needed emergency care, all needed vet care and there were many deceased dogs in freezers.

NC Wesleyan College receives grant

North Carolina Wesleyan College recently received a $100,000 grant from The Cannon Foundation. The College recognizes the need to provide students, faculty and staff adequate mobility around campus to meet its mission of preparing students for professional advancement, life-long learning and responsible participation in their communities. The grant will be utilized to repair and replace sidewalks and curb ramps throughout the College.

Administrators from Nash Community College met with leaders at the Center for Industry, Technology & Innovation (CITI) High School on Wednesday, October 31 to share information about SkillsUSA - a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Nash Community College's SkillsUSA chapter was chartered in 2017 to help students excel by providing educational programs, leadership opportunities, events and competitions that support career and technical education.

The Signing Day event includes a ceremony where selected nursing students officially sign on with Nash UNC's Nurse Scholars Program.

NCC inducts new members into Gamma Beta Phi

Nash Community College's Gamma Beta Phi chapter inducted new members recently in a ceremony held in Brown Auditorium. Gamma Beta Phi is a national honor society emphasizing service, scholarship, and character, and aiming to broaden its members' academic and philanthropic lives so that they might make a difference in the world. NCC's chapter was chartered in 1975.

The North Carolina weighted average price quoted Thursday, Nov 15, 2018, for small lot sales of delivered, cartoned, grade "A" eggs was 153.22 for extra large, 148.13 for Large, 116.70 for Medium, and 83.00 for Small eggs.

RED OAK -- With a disappointing football season coming to an end for Northern Nash High School, Knights' fans will now look to the hardwood, where over the past two seasons, the boys squad is 49-6 overall and 20-0 in regular season conference play.
Henry Drake is entering his fifth year as the Head Coach at Northern Nash, and is looking to secure the team's third consecutive Big East Championship this season.

STANHOPE -- Just because the postseason has started doesn't mean the points will suddenly stop being piled up by the Southern Nash High School football team.
If last Friday's game against CB Aycock was any indication, the Firebirds are just getting started.
Southern Nash, the No. 2 seed, roared past 15th-seeded Aycock by a 63-0 margin in the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association's Class 3-A State Playoffs at historic Firebird Stadium on the SNHS.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Sarah Hicks has long since garnered a deserved reputation as one of the area's top all-around hih school athletes.
But the rest of the state is also being served notice of Hicks' lofty abilities.
Hicks, a senior multi-sport star at Nash Central High School, was recently named as the school's nominee for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

Bishops win over Ferrum

FREDERICKSBURG, VA. -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College men's basketball team cruised to a 68-49 non-conference win over former rival Ferrum College (Va.) last Saturday at the Mary Washington Tip-Off Classic.
A big first half had the Bishops leading 37-19 at the break as they held Ferrum to 26 percent shooting and zero percent from three-point range while Wesleyan shot 52 percent themselves and 38 percent from three.

Warriors Return

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- The 11th Annual Combat Warriors Deer Hunt was held Nov. 2-5 in Franklin County and the warriors stayed at the cabin on Mrs. Mavis Nelms farm, Highway 39 S. about 2 miles outside of Louisburg.
What a great and successful event it was , with (18) total warriors; made up of Marines, U S Army troops, and Navy Seals.
