Area schools placed on lock down due to shooting threat

Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools were under a soft lockdown most of the school day last Thursday as law enforcement officers investigated a threat made to an unidentified school.
The Rocky Mount Police Department reportedly received a call from a disconnected cell phone last Thursday morning, November 15.

Northern Nash Water System Project is approved

The Northern Nash Water System project recently received approval to move forward from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Water Infrastructure Division, paving the way for the county to begin seeking construction bids.
The planned project is a significant expansion of the current Nash County drinking water system and will include construction of a new 250,000 gallon elevated storage tank, water source wells and approximately 50 miles of water lines.

We've had a few parents drop by or call our office after reading the November 8th story in The Nashville Graphic regarding Nash-Rocky Mount School Board's decision to add a part-time resource officer at the Central Office here in Nashville -- particularly when there are no officers located in any of our elementary schools.
I must say, I absolutely understand why parents are upset.

There is always something to be thankful for

I've interviewed a lot of people in my day and time. A lot.
I've been fortunate to have interviewed many who were celebrating 100th birthdays.
I always consider it an honor to get to sit down and hear people's stories. No matter their age or place in life, we all have stories. But getting to sit down and hear the story of a Centenarian is pretty amazing!

We need real commitment and leadership in our school district

Dear Editor: There are many things in Nash County that are moving in a positive direction. The Commissioners, with great fiscal responsibility, have held the tax rate for many years while still moving the county forward. The largest municipality, Rocky Mount, has seen tremendous growth in and around the Mill area, including the success of the Farmer's Market.

Nashville Police to host NC Fallen Law Enforcement Memorial Tree

Nashville's Police Department will once again serve as the home to the North Carolina Fallen Law Enforcement Memorial Tree.
The tree is slated to be put up on Sunday, December 2 at 3 p.m. and the community is invited to attend, said Carie Jones, who started hosting the tree six years ago at her home. Since that time, Jones has had the tree at area police department's, including the Sharpsburg Police Department, where her uncle Chief Wayne Hathaway served.

Nash County is awarded $20,000 grant to help with opioid crisis

The Nash County Health Department, in collaboration with Nash County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Coalition of Addiction, Recovery and Education (CARE) of Nash County, was recently awarded a grant to help address the opioid crisis.
The $20,000 Emergency Overdose: Local Mitigation to Opioid Crisis grant was funded through the Injury and Violence Prevention Branch under the North Carolina Division of Public Health.

A local man is trying to bring life back into a section of Nashville that used to be a popular part of the town.
Chris Sandy recently purchased the warehouse building at 720 S Boddie Street and is working to restore the building.
At last month's Nashville Town Council meeting, Sandy told council members he is trying to bring traffic back to that area of town.

Habitat for Humanity builds home in Nashville

Four years after Nashville's Habitat for Humanity merged with the Rocky Mount group, the merged organization is wrapping up construction of its first home in Nashville.
The Town of Nashville recently granted approval for waiving the fees for taps to connect to the town's utilities for the Nash Rocky Mount Habitat for Humanity group.

Two local churches joined together on Saturday to provide a Thanksgiving meal to the community.
Nashville Baptist Church, with help from Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church, gave out over 200 Thanksgiving meals as part of a mission project, "Food for the Needy."

Simpson to headline Rocky Mount parade

A full season of holiday events are on tap to end the 2018 calendar year, and a well-known name will make a stop in Rocky Mount as part of the festivities.
Brooke Simpson, who was a finalist on season 13 of NBC's hit show, "The Voice," will serve as grand marshal of the Rocky Mount Christmas Parade on Dec. 2.
The parade, which will begin at 3 p.m. in downtown Rocky Mount, will feature Simpson, who has released two singles.
