ROCKY MOUNT -- Southern Nash's boys basketball team got a rare early start to the season following the Firebirds' tough loss in the second round of the state football playoffs.
Southern made the most of its unlikely November opportunities by winning two of three games, including a 67-57 road triumph last Friday night against county rival Nash Central.

NEW CLERK TAKES OATH

Monday was a historic day for Nash County as a new Clerk of Superior Court was sworn in for the first time in over 50 years.
Superior Court Judge Quentin Sumner swore in Linda Thorne first thing Monday morning with Clerk of Court staff, family and friends looking on.
Sumner said the swearing in was a first in many ways.

Former manager to find Nashville's new leader

Nashville's first town manager is coming back to help the town with its search for a permanent town manager.
Nashville's Town Council agreed on Tuesday night to hire a search firm to help in the selection process.
Mayor Donald Street said they had received proposals from four companies.

The Coopers Volunteer Fire Department is hosting Santa from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sundays in December. Santa will be available at the department on December 9, 16 and 23. Kids will also get a chance to color Christmas pictures and have cookies and hot chocolate. Parent raises security concerns to school board

The Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education will consider a revision to a contract approved last month that hires a part-time police officer for Central Office.
The Board of Education unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding last month to contract with the Nashville Police Department to provide a rotating group of off-duty police officers for the school system's central office buildings, which includes Central Office, the Transportation Building and the Technology Warehouse.

The wet weather on Saturday afternoon forced Nashville's Christmas events to be moved inside, causing attendance to be down.
The event was moved to Nashville's Harold D. Cooley Library.
A handful of youth participated in the children's parade, where creations were judged and winners received cash prizes.

Longtime Momeyer council member resigns from board

A long-time member of Momeyer's Town Council announced his resignation at the board's regular meeting on November 19.
Ronnie Pace has served on Momeyer's Board since the town was incorporated in June 1991.
"He was one of the original members," Town Clerk Karen Hendricks said. "He was very involved."

4-H hosts annual Festival of Tables

Eighteen tables were decorated for the fourth annual Festival of Tables held on Friday night. The event brought out over 100 people to support the mission of 4-H.
The event was hosted by Nash County 4-H and held at Nashville United Methodist Church.
Dinner was provided by the church's Appalachia Service Project Mission team and 4-H youth served tables during the event.

Christmas tree honors fallen officers

Volunteers solemnly placed 566 hero tags on a Christmas tree outside Nashville's Police Department on Sunday afternoon.
The hero tags contain the names of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in North Carolina. Of the 566 names, seven of those were killed this year, including Rocky Mount Police Officer Christopher Driver.

The other day, I caught part of a commercial on the radio for a new exercise bike.
I missed part of the setup, but the basic idea is that the bike had an Alexa/Siri type module that would "encourage" or "coach" the rider on towards his or her goal.
Basically, this machine yells at the user.

It's time to establish a checking facility for immigrants at our southern border

Dear Editor: Currently there are two caravans that have reached the US border near San Diego traveling from the southern border of Mexico. Along the way members of the caravans were offered asylum in Mexico. The majority refused the offer of jobs, medical care, temporary identification papers, and asylum.

Choosing Nashville's next manager is a big deal

The Town of Nashville has been without a permanent manager for several months now.
On Tuesday night, the board agreed to seek help in finding the right candidate.
Of course, hiring an outsider to come in and assist the town will cost money but in the grand scheme of things, it's probably money well spent.

Christmas in Spring Hope is Friday, Dec. 14th

An Old Fashioned Christmas in Spring Hope will be held next Friday, December 14 from 5:30 until 8 p.m. in Downtown Spring Hope.
The event is hosted by the Spring Hope Chamber of Commerce and will again feature horse drawn carriage rides, a Christmas scavenger hunt, face painting, Christmas vendors as well as a live nativity. Girl Scout Troop 4835 will also be selling chili and hot dogs.

Spring Hope mulls board appointment policy

Some Spring Hope Commissioners would like to see a change in the way members of the Downtown Development Board are selected.
One vacancy in the development board has opened which Owner/Operator of Southern Nash News Mark Cone will fulfill.
According to Town Manager Jae Kim, when a vacancy in the development board arises, individuals are nominated within the development board then those names are brought upon the Board of Commissioners to approve.
