RM to host tourneys

ROCKY MOUNT -- The USA South Athletic Conference has announced a partnership with the city of Rocky Mount to host the 2020 and 2021 USA South Spring Sports Festivals.
The festival features the tournaments of seven conference spring sports. This will be the second time the Festival has been hosted by Rocky Mount as the 2013-2015 events were convened in the Eastern North Carolina city.

Nashville hires Spring Hope Police Chief

The Town of Nashville has hired Spring Hope's Chief of Police to lead its police department, the town announced in a press release last Thursday.
Anthony Puckett was selected from a pool of 12 applicants and will begin his duties on June 18 at an annual salary of $64,584.
Puckett has served as Spring Hope's Chief of Police for five years.

Two nabbed for stealing farm truck

Two Rocky Mount men have been charged with stealing a farm truck on Monday.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office responded to 10983 NC 33 in Whitakers in reference to a Fisher Farms company work truck being stolen while the employees were working in a field.

Nashville hires new police chief

The Town of Nashville has hired Spring Hope's Chief of Police to lead its police department, the town announced on Thursday.
Chief Anthony Puckett has been appointed as the Police Chief for Nashville. Puckett, who was selected from a pool of 12 applicants, will begin his duties on June 18 at an annual salary of $64,584.
Puckett has served as Spring Hope's Chief of Police for five years.

STANHOPE -- Southern Nash football coach Brian Foster considers every senior class to be important, but this group will undoubtedly hold a special place in his memory book.
The Firebirds' 25 upperclassmen were part of a club that went 34-4 over the past trio of campaigns and claimed three straight championships in the always-competitive Big East Conference standings.

New town manager takes the helm

Nashville's Town Council said farewell to Interim Town Manager Leonard Barefoot and welcomed new Town Manager Randy Lansing on Tuesday night during the board's regular meeting.
Mayor Donald Street swore Lansing in towards the end of the meeting, after all the board's business items were done. Lansing was joined by his wife, Luanne.

Nash funds jail updates

Nash County Commissioners approved additional funding in the 2019-2020 budget for jail improvements but declined to give the Nash-Rocky Mount School System additional funding for teacher supplies.
A public hearing was held on Monday morning on the recommended 2019-2020 budget, with no one from the public speaking.

957 seniors turn tassels

A total of 957 Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools (NRMPS) seniors turned their tassels as they graduated from four different high schools on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1, 2019.
Ceremonies were held at Nash Central High School (NCHS) at 6 p.m. and Northern Nash High School (NNHS) at 8 p.m. on May 31 while Southern Nash High School (SNHS) celebrated at 11 a.m. and Rocky Mount High School (RMHS) at 2 p.m. on June 1, 2019.

Summer youth camps offered

Nashville's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is offering three different summer camps for youth of all ages.
The first camp is an Environmental Camp, which has been hosted in year's past. Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Director Marguerite Bishop said the camp has been successful in year's past and continues to grow.

Murder suspect nabbed during traffic stop

A South Carolina murder suspect was apprehended in Nash County during a traffic stop last Thursday night.
Deputies with the Nash County Sheriff's Office Highway Interdiction Team initiated a traffic stop on a white Nissan Altima on I-95 southbound near mile marker 141.
Deputy P. Hufton approached the vehicle and spoke with the driver, who provided false names.

Cow chip bingo to fund local camps

Nash County 4-H'ers are selling tickets to participate in a special type of BINGO.
The Nash County 4-H Send-a-Kid-to-Camp program will present their first ever Cow Patty BINGO fundraiser on June 14.
The event will be livestreamed on Facebook beginning at 6 p.m.

Nashville Police Sergeant retires from post

Retirement wasn't an easy decision for Sgt. Steve Glover.
After agreeing to stay on a few extra weeks to help with the Blooming Festival, Glover officially retired from Nashville's Police Department on May 31.
Nashville's Town Council recognized Glover for his service Tuesday night. Council also approved a resolution declaring Glover's service side arm surplus and gifting him the weapon in exchange for $1.

Taste of Nash County to fund local scholarship

Nashville's Business and Professional Women (BPW) are offering a taste of something new this year, as it presents a new fundraising event for its scholarship program.
The First Annual Taste of Nash County is set for Tuesday, June 11 from 4 until 7 p.m. at Nash Community College.
Tickets are $15 each.

NCSO thwarts rumors on social media

The Nash County Sheriff's Office squashed rumors last week that a human hand was discovered at the site where the body of Sarah Denise Patterson was found.
According to the Sheriff's Office, local social media pages were reporting a human hand had been discovered at the site where the body of Patterson had been found off of West Old Spring Hope Road.

Town of Castalia approves budget

At it's regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, the Town Board of Castalia approved next year's budget, and heard two presentations - one from Emilio Reyes and another from Floyd Brake.
No one from the public was present for the public hearing on the budget and it was approved unanimously.

Scholarship deadline is June 18th

The Nashville NC Chamber of Commerce will be awarding a $500 Education Scholarship to two graduating high school seniors in July this year to help with college expenses. Funding for the scholarships is provided from advertising on the chamber's website.

Spring Hope looks at speeding concerns

Two residents are concerned about drivers speeding where they live and want commissioners to take extra action to make the area safer.
Peggy Leggett and her husband moved to their home on South Walnut Street in November of 2018. She said since then, there has been two serious accidents in that section.

I'm willing to bet most of the regular readers of this column know well the story of D-Day and its significance to modern world history.
The 75th Anniversary is this week, and as I heard one of the participants in the upcoming ceremonies say, this is the last time to make a big deal about D-Day with some of the participants still around.

This week, I attended the funeral of a retired teacher/principal who passed away.
It was obvious by the full church that Jill Lynn Sutton was loved and remembered by so many.
Mrs. Sutton was the principal of Coopers Elementary School when I came to the Graphic in 2006. I believe she served for five years at Coopers before her retirement.
