Man jailed after waiving machete at passing cars

NASHVILLE- Reports of a man waving a machete at passing cars on July 26 near Nash Community College led to the apprehension and arrest of Isaiah Williams by the Nashville Police Department, who charged him with Going Armed To The Terror of the Public.
NPD officers were dispatched to the area of Eastern Avenue and North Old Carriage July 26, where a man wearing a Cook Out T-shirt was said to be armed with a machete and exhibiting threatening behavior.

NCSO busts New York men on I-95 for drug trafficking

Two New York City men, pulled over for speeding July 17 on I-95, are being held in jail under a $175,000 secured bond after their arrest on drug trafficking charges.
Luia Find Al Awdi, 27, of Richmond Hill, Queens, and Alhaggag Abdo Mohamed Musaid, 23, of the Bronx, were pulled by Nash County Sheriffs deputies around 8:22 am for speeding.

Rocky Mount brothers sentenced for large-scale drug trafficking operating

RALEIGH - Two Rocky Mount brothers have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in separate but related drug trafficking operations involving crack cocaine, fentanyl, and firearms.
"Pumping illicit narcotics--especially fentanyl--into our communities not only endangers the lives of our citizens, it is a serious federal crime," said Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar.

NCSO I-95 traffic stop nets cocaine, money

BATTLEBORO- Two out-of-state men are being held in the Nash County Detention Center after their arrest on July 15 on I-95 near Battleboro. The reason? Cocaine and a "large amount" of money found in the car.
According to a July 16 Nash County Sheriff's Office press release, Harry Rodriguez Felix, 35, of Erie, PA and Marcos Rivera Garcia, 26, of New Bedford, MA, were driving a white mini-van with out-of-state plates when they were pulled over at 1:45 p.m. July 15 for a routine traffic violation.

Rosser announces that he is leaving Northern

RED OAK -- One of the top basketball players in the area's history is making a big change this offseason, one that not only is taking him outside of Nash County but outside of North Carolina as a whole.
Formerly of Northern Nash High School's Boys Basketball roster, one of the class of 2027's top players in C.J. Rosser announced on Sunday via social media that he would be leaving Northern this year, opting to attend Southeastern Preparatory Academy in Orlando, Florida this academic year.

Ten-year assistant and longtime member of the Southern Nash family Sterling Leonard will be taking the reins as the Firebirds' head coach on the hardwood, taking over the position from Robbie Kennedy, a role he held since the 2002-03 season.

Violations cited at water treatment plant

ROCKY MOUNT - The City of Rocky Mount has received a notice of violation by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
At issue is effulent discharge from the Tar River Water Treatment Plant's wastewater treatment facility on May 8 and May 9, 2025.
A July 15 certified letter to Elton Daniels, Rocky Mount City Manager, gives both the notice of violation and the intent to assess a civil penalty.
The environmental group Sound Rivers posted a press release about an event July 17, the same day that a Nashville Graphic reporter was denied photographic access to the Tar River Reservoir dam.

Animal shelter fails second state inspection

ROCKY MOUNT - Less than six weeks after the Nash County Animal Shelter was cited by the state for multiple animal care violations, the facility has failed another inspection, leading to another civil penalty of $9,100.
The shelter, also called the Pet Connection Center, was previously assessed $6,700 in fines after an inspection June 13 and a follow-up visit on June 16.

Nash schools to change wireless device policy
Nash schools to change wireless device policy

NASHVILLE- While a final vote is pending at the August 4 board of education meeting, Nash School District officials are putting the word out now about a policy change on student wireless device use. It should be going into effect at all schools- K-12- across the county by the first day of school, August 12. This also includes the Early College. The policy is based on recent legislation adopted at the state level, and would supersede earlier district policies.

Cooper launches campaign for US Senate Seat

RALEIGH - Former North Carolina Governor and Nashville native son Roy Cooper is running for a U.S. Senate seat.
Cooper, a Democrat and also a former attorney general from 2001-2017, said his decision came in response to the current threat to the middle class.
"Right now, our country is facing a moment as fragile as any I can remember. And the decisions we make in the next election will determine if we even have a middle class in America," Cooper said, adding that he "never really wanted to go to Washington" and wanted to serve people in North Carolina, "but these are not ordinary times."
