Spring Hope still unhappy with Envirolink

The cleanliness of the town of Spring Hope remains an ongoing issue for both residents and commissioners who want action taken immediately.
Resident Fan Whitley said she has lived in Spring Hope for almost her entire life and is proud of it. However, she stated she is embarrassed when her grandchildren visit and questions why the town's appearance is not up-to-par.

As we head into summer, generation spreads

As we dive into the dog days of summer, I was glad we had some timely rains over the weekend.
I used to shake my head in my younger days when I'd hear "old timers" say that.
Gardens are hopefully producing a little for all the work put in during what seemed like a long and mild spring. The local farmer's markets are rolling as best they can in a pandemic, and I'm sorely missing strawberry season.

Nashville is experiencing growing pains again.
I guess having such pains is a good sign that we're a much desired town in the eyes of developers and prospective citizens.
That's a good thing.
But at all times we do need to keep in mind that we're in charge of Nashville's long range health and fate.

Senior student mourns losing her "best year" due to pandemic

Dear Editor: So the last 13 years of working my butt off to graduate and get to what is supposed to be my year have been for nothing.
I won't get a senior breakfast or lunch, no senior trips no senior prom no senior pep rally no nothing. You know what I'll get - either online school or one week of wearing a mask for 8 hours then two weeks of online.

This photo originally published in The Nashville Graphic on July 24, 1958. Erkin Smith was pictured delivering a load of watermelons to the North Nashville Produce Center which was operated by O.R. Burgess. The melons were said to be piling up due to a glutted market and many growers were disappointed in melon prices that year.

Nash County Senior services continue to serve

Although the doors are closed, Nash County Senior Services is working diligently to serve Nash County older adults.
The home delivered meal program serves Nash County older adults 60 and over that are homebound. Currently ten routes are being served in the Nashville, Red Oak, Dortches, West Mount, Castalia, Bailey, Samaria, Middlesex areas and Spring Hope has two.

Local CAP Squadron to  observe 40th anniversary
Local CAP Squadron to observe 40th anniversary

Members of Civil Air Patrol's Tar River Composite Squadron will observe the squadron's 40th anniversary of its founding in August, announced unit commander, First Lieutenant Liz Dunster. "We are inviting past members of our squadron to join our virtual meeting commemorating the occasion on the evening of 27 August 2020. Interested members of the public are also invited to share the experience with us."

NCWC Youth Theology Institute hosts summer program

Last month, Connect- Youth Theology Institute at NC Wesleyan College hosted its fifth consecutive year of its summer program. Though the format changed due to COVID-19, the mission remained the same: "creating space for high school students to connect to Christ, Community and the Church."

NCDMV waives road test for some drivers 18 and over

With the timeframe for resuming road tests remaining unknown because of the continued impact of COVID-19 cases, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) will begin waiving road tests for qualified drivers who are 18 or older, starting Wednesday, July 22.
These drivers MUST have an appointment at a license office, which can be made online on the NCDOT website.

Taylor Hall and Lara Wood (above photo) were recipients of this year's Hazel Valentine Scholarship, which was presented by the Nashville Business and Professional Women (BPW). Hall is a graduate of Southern Nash High School. She plans to attend Nash Community College in the fall and then plans to transfer to North Carolina State University. Local students named Golden LEAF scholarship recipients

A total of 215 rural students from the entire State of North Carolina were recognized for their hard work, leadership and dedication to school by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA), which administers the scholarship program on behalf of the Golden LEAF Foundation.
Each Golden LEAF Scholar is eligible to receive up to $3,000 each year for up to four years of study at a participating four-year North Carolina college or university.

Nash Community College announces Dual Admission Program grads

Three recent Nash Community College graduates will continue their collegiate careers at NC State University this fall after participating in the Community College Collaboration (C3) dual admission program.
A partnership between NC State University and 10 NC community colleges, C3 seeks students with demonstrated potential for academic success based on previous high school or community college performance who exhibit a high degree of motivation and perseverance.

BANNER ELK -- Lees-McRae College Head Women's Soccer Coach Cally Morrill announced the addition of 12 newcomers to the 2020 recruiting class.
Among the signees is former Nash Central High School standout Mallory Roughton, who inked a letter-of-intent to play for the Bobcats during her senior season.
Roughton was a four-year starter for the Lady Bulldogs and played a variety of positions, including midfield, defense, goalkeeper and forward.

Breakfast Optimist wins a thriller in RM action

ROCKY MOUNT -- Breakfast Optimist's Thomas Pittman lashed 2 triples, Matt Pridgen knocked home 3 runs and Andrew Rine gave up only one run over 3 innings on the hill as the threesome spear-headed a 7-5, extra inning thriller in taking down the Wesley Men 7-5 on a hot, muggy Monday evening in local Rocky Mount Youth Baseball action at the RM Sports Complex.

WILSON -- The homestanding Wilson Tobs defeated the East Coast Weekenders by a 9-8 final on Sunday night in Coastal Plain League baseball action at historic Fleming Stadium.
In the teams' first-ever matchup, the Tobs found their 13th overall victory this season.

NASHVILLE -- The Nash Community College Foundation will host its Fourth Annual Student Scholarship Sporting Clays Tournament on August 7 at Rose Hill Farms Sporting Clays and Hunting Preserve in Nashville.

CIAA calls off its fall sports slate

CHARLOTTE -- After thorough analysis the Board of Directors for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), in conjunction with its Athletic Directors Association (ADA), has voted that NCAA sport competition sponsored by the conference will not occur during the fall of 2020 due to ongoing safety concerns.
The decision is informed by the reality that several CIAA member schools are located in states experiencing dramatic increases in new COVID-19 cases.
