NCSO investigates suspicious death

The Nash County Sheriff's Office is investigating a suspicous death in the Castalia area.
NCSO and local fire departments were dispatched to the 8300 block of North NC 58 in reference to a brush fire Wednesday.
Upon arrival to the scene, a black male was found deceased in the area. The black male appears to be 20-30 years of age.
At this time, the black male has not been identified.

RALEIGH -- North Carolina State University running back Zonovan Knight has claimed a spot on the prestigious All-Atlantic Coast Conference Football Team for the 2020 campaign.
Knight, a sophomore from Southern Nash High School, made the All-ACC Third Team list after a productive regular season campaign.

STANHOPE -- Southern Nash High School's boys basketball program has never been blessed with a lot of size -- at least during Robbie Kennedy's tenure as the head coach.
Certainly, SN boasted plenty of tall units in the late 1990s thanks to the likes of Demario Daniels, Mo Boykin and Julius Peppers.
But since then, the Firebirds have had to rely on perimeter skill much more than inside scoring options.

NC Wesleyan holds 80th commencement ceremony

On Saturday, December 5, North Carolina Wesleyan College held its Winter Commencement for 195 graduates on the front lawn of campus. This was the College's 80th graduation, with the first occurring in 1960.
The closed event was open only to graduates, faculty and the platform party to allow the College to ensure physical distance and the safety of those participating.

Nashville okays commercial ordinance

The Town of Nashville now has an ordinance that deals with maintenance of commercial properties in town.
Nashville's Town Council unanimously adopted a commercial property maintenance ordinance in November, after a public hearing was held in October on the ordinance.
The town only had a minimum housing standard ordinance, which set minimum standards of fitness for homes and residential buildings.

Town hosts second drop-in workshop

The Town of Nashville continues to seek citizen input for the town's soon-to-be updated Comprehensive Plan.
A second drop-by workshop will be held on Wednesday, January 13 from 3 until 7 p.m. in council chambers at Cooley Library, located at 114 West Church Street, Nashville.
The town has contracted with WithersRavenel to update the town's current Comprehensive Plan, which was adopted in 2011 by town council.

COVID-19 UPDATE: Nash County is labeled "red" for critical community spread

Nash County is now among the 65 North Carolina counties designed as red counties, indicating critical community spread of COVID-19.
Governor Roy Cooper and Secretary of North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Dr. Mandy Cohen shared an update last Tuesday, December 22 and warned that over 90 percent of North Carolina counties were now designated as either red or orange counties.

Nash Arts to livestream Southern roots music series

The Nash County Arts Council is hosting a monthly livestream music series featuring intimate performances from emerging voices in Southern roots music.
The video series "Grounded" will be hosted by the Nash County Arts Council with funding support from the North Carolina Arts Council.
Young traditional artists will be spotlighted in the series, which will launch on Thursday, January 14 at 6 p.m. and will broadcast on Facebook and YouTube the second Thursday through April.

Dortches honors service of former mayor

The Town of Dortches recently honored the life and service of former Mayor Kirby Boice Brown.
Brown passed away unexpectedly in August 2020 after battling COVID-19.
Brown served the town's board for 42 years, first as a commissioner from 1978 to 2002 then as mayor from 2002 until his death.

RMPD investigates homicide

Rocky Mount Police have charged an 18-year-old with first degree murder for a homicide that occurred on Sunday, December 27.
Police responded to the 1100 block of Long Avenue around 11:30 a.m. in reference to a call of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found 34-year-old Dominic Mercer. Mercer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rocky Mount man receives 13 years for robbery

A Rocky Mount man was sentenced to 13 years in prison for robbing a deliver drivery at gunpoint.
According to court documents, Emmanuel Marquise Morris, 25, ordered pizza on January 1, 2019 from Dominos Pizza in Rocky Mount. When the delivery driver arrived with the pizza, Morris called him to the back yard where Morris waited with a loaded revolver.
