Two men were arrested last Saturday at a private event that halted traffic in Castalia.
Maj. Eddie Moore of the Nash County Sheriff's Office said around 10 p.m. July 23, sheriff's office deputies along with Nash County Highway Patrol and the Nashville Police Department were called to Moore's Ball Field to clear traffic.

Rocky Mount Senior Center to serve as cooling location

As dangerous, extreme heat settles into our area this summer, the city of Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department is offering its Senior Center, 427 S. Church Street, as a cooling location for residents.
Any residents needing relief from high temperatures may come and sit inside the Senior Center during its operating hours. 8 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Fridays.

Metro Maintenance earns small business of the month award

Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce announced its Small Business of the Month last week. Metro Maintenance is the winner for the month of July.
"We felt that Mr. Alston at Metro Maintenance proved to be a winner in all of our categories," Stated Erin Gall, chamber small business committee chair. "It was a no-brainer to award his business this prestigious award for the month of July."

New life stages are sometimes beyond our control

I enjoy the TV commercials from Progressive Insurance where a counselor tries to help people from turning into their parents.
I've certainly been talking about how impatient people have gotten on the highway. It's true I've been accused of driving like an old man by some people close to me, but we have to have the context that: 1) One of them drives like an insane person 2) One of them has been questioned about the unusual wear pattern on their tires because of rapid speeds 3) One drives in a big city.

County board shy one vote to pass Brunch Bill

Some of Nash County's businesses may have to wait another month before possibly being able to sell alcohol before noon on Sundays.
Senate Bill 155, also known as the "Brunch Bill" was signed into law by Gov. Roy Cooper in June of 2017.
The bill allows places such as retail outlets and restaurants to start selling alcohol at 10 a.m. on Sundays, instead of noon.

A local high school history teacher and his students completed a project which showcases the names of enslaved people at a former plantation home in Rocky Mount.
Nash Central High School History teacher Renny Taylor said he along with his junior AP history class did a research project on the antebellum period, which was the time between the formation of the U.S. government and the outbreak of the American Civil War.

Spaulding Resource Center returns to home campus

A historic Spring Hope resource center has returned to its original location and recently reopened a portion of its campus to the community.
Spaulding Resource Center, located on 600 South Pine Street, was once a school where all black students attended during the segregation period. It taught students in the first through 12th grade.

Parents must opt-in for child's school bus transportation at Nash County Schools

Nash County Public Schools is making two big transportation related changes this upcoming school year.
All parents who need bus transportation, must opt-in with an online form. Those who do not have access to an electronic device can call their school for assistance with submitting the form. The transportation request must be completed as soon as possible.
