Hospital is getting new name

ROCKY MOUNT - Nash UNC Health Care is in the process of becoming UNC Health Nash.
The hospital in Rocky Mount will begin to use the new name in January.
The entire UNC Health system re-branded back in February 2020.

Nashville bumps utility deposit by 100 percent

NASHVILLE - The Town of Nashville has increased its security deposit for new utility customers.
Council members approved increasing the security deposit from $100 to $200 last Tuesday night at the board's regular meeting.
Finance Director John O'Keefe brought the changes before the board.

Highway funding fixes sidewalks, sinkholes

NASHVILLE - Nashville is using state funds to repave roads around town and replace sidewalks near its elementary school while Spring Hope works to fix two street-damaging sinkholes.
The money comes from the N.C. State Highway Fund commonly referred to as the Powell Bill.

Early voting begins Oct. 20

Friday is the last day to register to vote on Election Day.
Anyone who doesn't register by the 5 p.m. deadline that day won't be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 8.
However, anyone can register and vote at the same time during early one-stop voting.

Town okays ornament buy for Christmas

NASHVILLE - The Town of Nashville is making plans for Christmas.
Council members last week took action to pave the way for the town's annual Downtown Christmas Celebration, slated for Saturday, December 3. As part of the celebration, some streets will be closed during the festivities. Council members unanimously approved the permit for the event and street closings.

NASHVILLE - Everyone is invited to a meet and greet next week to talk with candidates running for offices that affect Nashville and Nash County.
The event is sponsored by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce and set for 5-7 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Nashville Parks and Recreation Center, 108 S. Boddie St.
"The election is right around the corner," said Chamber President Cliff Joyner.

Hwy 55 employee Aryn Vickers delivers breakfast last Saturday's annual Nashville Lions Club fundraiser. On the menu were pancakes, sausage, bacon, milk and orange juice. The local civic club that has operated for more than 50 years, helping to buy glasses for the blind.

Giant pumpkins, watermelons and gourds galore!

SPRING HOPE -- Brandon Huber has been growing gourds since he was a child.
About 10 years ago the Raleigh resident got into growing giant gourds. That brought him to Spring Hope on Saturday where he won first place in the long gourd category with a 71.5-inch gourd at the third annual Spring Hope Giant Pumpkin and Watermelon Weigh-off, an event meant to accompany the Spring Hope National Pumpkin Festival, which was canceled this year due to weather.

Parking in downtown Nashville has been a long discussed, debated and disputed issue for as long as I can remember. Only now, it's become a larger issue due to growth. Not only has our downtown grown with more retail customers shopping and dining, but so has county government which has placed bricks and mortar on much of its own parking.

Rebekah Hunter, 14, of Rocky Mount, recently collected 500 books for the purpose of donating them to Nash County Social Services as part of earning the Girl Scout Silver Award.
The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

Spring Hope sees uptick of property crime

Spring Hope's chief executive says an uptick in brazen property crimes isn't due to fewer police officers on patrol.
"Crime statistics are up nationally," said Town Manager Andrew DeIonno.
Spring Hope saw three cases of theft in September including larcenies of bicycles breaking and entering along with the theft of construction tools and equipment, including a break-in of town property.

Man charged with shooting his caretaker

MIDDLESEX -- An elderly man is accused of shooting his caretaker then chasing the injured person down the street with a shotgun.
Ray Cameron, 82, faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Authorities held Cameron on a domestic violence hold before allowing him to bond out of jail. He has a court date of Oct. 27 in Nash County District Court in Nashville.
