Man charged in double homicide

ROCKY MOUNT -- City police have charged a man with killing a couple in a parked vehicle and leaving two young children in the backseat.
Eric Coley, 42, faces charges of two counts of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Coley had his first court appearance Monday after being arrested Friday. He's being held without bond in the Nash County Detention Center.

Stolen emergency vehicle recovered in Dortches

DORTCHES -- A keen-eyed store clerk and a check of social media led to the recent arrest of a South Carolina man accused of stealing a rescue vehicle.
On Nov. 28, deputies received a report of a suspicious person at the Circle K on NC 43 in Dortches, said Maj. Eddie Moore with the Nash County Sheriff's Office.
"The clerk of the store advised that the male operator of the vehicle was acting suspiciously and was unloading items from the back of the vehicle," Moore said.

U.S. Alt 64 outside Spring Hope will soon be closed during replacement of the bridge over the Tar River pictured in this photo taken Sunday afternoon. Andrew Barksdale, spokesman for the N.C. Department of Transportation, said Fred Smith Co. of Raleigh has been given a $3.7 million state contract to replace the 70-year-old bridge, which is nearing the end of its service life.

Edwards named Farmer of the Year
Edwards named Farmer of the Year

The Pumpkin Man and his top hand have been named Nash County's Farmer of the Year and this year's next generation farmer.
Mike Edwards and Arron Bridges work together at M&H Farms outside Nashville.
Edwards raises chickens for Perdue Farms, but is known locally as the Pumpkin Man for his selling gourds around Halloween.

Nashville Christmas Parade is Saturday!

The Town of Nashville will kick off its Christmas festivities on Saturday, December 3.
The event will begin at 4 p.m. at H.D. Cooley Library with music from the Nash Central High School Show Choir.
The Children's Bike Parade will follow at 4:15 p.m. The parade will begin at H.D. Cooley Library and go down West Church Street, onto South Alston Street then along East Washington Street to the Nash County Courthouse.

"A Christmas Carol" opens this weekend!

Keeping with tradition, Nash Arts will host its annual production of "A Christmas Carol," beginning this weekend.
Performances are slated for December 2, 3, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances are also scheduled for December 4 and 11 at 2:30 p.m.
This year's version of "A Christmas Carol" is a non-musical production.

"It influences the books you read and television programs you watch," said Thomas Joyner of Nash Produce.
Joyner was joined by Sue Leggett of Leggett Farming Partnership, Austin Wrenn of Wrenn's Farm and Tim Bass of Sunburst Tomatoes.
