School board votes for reassignment
NASHVILLE — By a vote of 8-3, the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools' board voted to change four K-5 elementary schools to K-2 and 3-5 schools at its meeting Monday night despite great opposition. The board also approved the proposed revised student reassignment policy by a vote of 9-1.

Beginning next school year, Red Oak and Swift Creek elementary schools will be linked together as K-2 and 3-5 schools, and Winstead Avenue and Englewood elementary schools will be linked together as well.

Boehm named '07 Citizen of the Year
NASHVILLE - There were several adjectives used Thursday night to describe the Nashville Chamber of Commerce's 2007 Distinguished Citizen of the Year. Humble, honest and reliable were at the top of the list. Surprised became the newest addition to that list as Lynne Anderson announced Jim Boehm as the 2007 Citizen of the Year.

In her letter of nomination, Anderson said Boehm had "played a vital role as a member of the Board of Directors of Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity." She added that Boehm is also active in the Lion's Club and is always offered a helping hand.

Sidewalk project bid is approved
Town Manager Preston Mitchell told board members at Tuesday night's meeting that bids were awarded to My Place or Yours, LLC for the Sidewalk Enhancement Grant Project. My Place or Yours, LLC had the lowest bid of $76,000. Mitchell said the company was a parent company of All Pro, which did the previous sidewalk work for the town.

Spring Hope awards contract for town hall
SPRING HOPE - Spring Hope's Board awarded a $900,000 contract to Heaton Construction to demolish the existing town hall and rebuild a new one in its place.

The approval came at a recessed meeting Thursday, March 1, a day after bids were reopened for the project.

Nash amends sign ordinance
NASHVILLE - An amendment to the county's sign ordinance was finally approved Monday after a committee was formed to review the original amendments.

Nash County's Board voted 5-1 to approve the sign committee's amendments to the sign regulations in the Unified Development Ordinance.

Merlin's Song seeks shelters in areas outside Rocky Mount
Merlin's Song, a non-profit feline rescue organization, is looking for a donor with a big heart. The organization currently fosters approximately 200 felines divided among volunteer homes. Logistically, care for the animals is difficult in transporting the abandonned and sick cats to and from vet appointments. Soliciting help from new volunteers is also difficult as many people are wary of stepping into a strangers home.

NASHVILLE — Assistant Superintendent Tommy Finch presented the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (N-RMS) Board of Education with revised text for their Student Assignment and Transfer policy at its work session Monday night. The revised policy up for approval significantly defines the terms and conditions of all student assignment and transfer and is specific in its guidelines for students who are children of school employees.

NASHVILLE - Nashville's Board received a positive audit report from Scott May, of May and Place, during its retreat held February 13.

"We found no errors or irregularities in the system,"May said. "All the town staff did a wonderful job this past year. Every department had everything there and ready to be audited."

Local woman dodges multiple charges
NASHVILLE - A Whitakers woman who tried to run over a Nashville Police Officer and Sheriff's Deputy received a 21-month active prison sentence in Superior Court January 23.

Rose Marie Augerlovoie-Burgess, 30, was picked up in August 2006 by a Sheriff's Deputy for outstanding warrants for breaking and entering and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. When the deputy arrived at the Nash County Magistrates Office, Burgess, who was in handcuffs, stole the deputy's vehicle and tried to run the officer over.

State and local school dropout rates increase
NASHVILLE - Last school year, according to the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (N-RMS) dropout rate was 7.07%, as 411 high school students chose to leave school. This figure shows 62 more dropouts than the previous school year, 60% of which were black males.

Students quilt to learn about African-American history
WHITAKERS - Swift Creek Elementary School third, fourth, and fifth grade art classes are learning African-American history with a needle and thread. Art teacher Wendy Ferguson-Whitehead has introduced her art classes to the idea that quilts may have been used to signal and direct runaway slaves through the Underground Railroad before the Civil War.

Wal-Mart plans to open in 2008
Wal-Mart will soon start bids for its supercenter in Nashville and plans to be up and running in a year, according to Stocks Engineering Vice-President Paul Smith.

Nashville's town council and planning board both approved site plans for Wal-Mart back in August 2006. Smith said Wal-Mart will receive bids for construction within the next month.

Fire departments across the United States have seen a huge increase in residential fire deaths this year. Many of those fires could have been prevented and local fire departments are encouraging citizens to take preventive measures to keep it from happening in Nash County.

System for punishing criminals seems to be slack
I've always been a strong believer in our justice system. Lately though, I've become a little skeptical.

It seems a slap on the hand has become more common in the courtroom than in our schools. It doesn't matter what the crime, chances are, you'll get off pretty easy, at least in Nash County.
