STANHOPE -- The clock ran out -- literally -- on Southern Nash's hopes during last year's Class 3-A State Boys Tennis Playoffs.

Southern was defeated after reaching at least the Elite Eight for the fourth straight year, but there was a difference this time around.

SN was topped 5-4 by a Rocky Mount club that the Firebirds had handled twice during the regular season.

STANHOPE -- Franklinton took all of five seconds to make the first move during last Friday's non-conference baseball matchup at Southern Nash.

That's how long it took Landon Vick's leadoff blast -- on the first pitch of the game, no less -- to sail over the left-field fence.

But while the Red Rams were quick starters, Southern proved to be a fast finisher en route to claiming a 12-2 home victory.

STANHOPE -- The complete Rambo DVD collection. Copies of Terminator 2 and Beetlejuice. A 25-pound bag of bird seed and a lemon cake, made by members of the Bunn High School fast-pitch softball team.

Needless to say, it was quite a birthday for current BHS softball assistant -- and former head coach -- Mike Lovin.

RM performers named to team
GREENSBORO -- Just when most thought Rocky Mount's Nazir Levine and Kendall Noble had played their last football game together, fate has brought the two Gryphon linemen together for one more performance.

Both senior offensive linemen have been selected to play for the East squad in the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Football Game on July 18 at Greensboro Grimsley's Jamieson Stadium. It will culminate a week of activity surrounding the NCCA's annual Coaching Clinic.

Pitt Is It For SN
STANHOPE -- All along, Brittany Alford and Pitt Community College seemed to be a perfect fit.

Pitt, located just south of Greenville, offered classes in radiology -- the field Alford hopes to get into upon graduation.

And the Lady Bulldogs also boast one of Region X's top volleyball programs -- a huge caveat considering the fact that Alford was one of the best spike performers this season in the NEW-6 Conference.

Lady Knights Roll
RED OAK -- Seven days after edging Bunn by two goals, the Northern Nash Lady Knights had much less difficulty during Monday's rematch on the NN campus.

Fueled by two goals from wing Danielle Yates, the Lady Knights rolled to a 7-1 home decision over the depleted Ladycats in a non-conference girls soccer matchup.

"We played a lot better this time,'' said NN head coach Joe McCarthy, whose club maintained its flawless record at 6-0. "We had a lot of breakaways in the first game, but we couldn't finish. We finished our opportunities this time.''

CORRECTION
In last week's Graphic, in the story "N-RMS mulls over revised policy" we inadvertently printed an error regarding the reassignment policy. It is important to note that the proposed list of student placement is intended to be a guideline and starting point for the administration to use whenever school staff opt to reassign their children to a school not in their attendance zone.

Volunteers make a big difference in communities
Volunteers make a big difference in communities
Volunteerism can make or break a community. It's evident in Nashville that volunteerism has helped Nashville become the successful community it is today. On Thursday night, I had the opportunity of attending the Nashville Chamber's Citizen of the Year Reception. This year's award was given to Jim Boehm, a very deserving recipient.

Turner's Time

BUNN - Curtailing the effectiveness of senior star Kim Turner is usually the No. 1 priority for any opponent of the Bunn High School girls soccer team.

Southern Nash was able to achieve that difficult feat last Thursday. But only for 64 of the game's 84 available minutes.

Down the stretch, Turner would collect three goals as part of her four-tally afternoon as the Ladycats pulled away late to secure a 5-1 non-conference decision over the Ladybirds at the BHS Soccer Field.

ROCKY MOUNT -- The winds of March blew in a strong performance last Friday for the Nash Central Lady Bulldogs.

And it brought just a teenie bit of luck in the form of a favorable goalpost.

Central's solid effort gave the Lady Bulldogs a 3-2 home decision over Bunn, but that victory wasn't secured until a golden opportunity for the Ladycats was thwarted with a clang late in the matchup.
